Perfect Information vs Random Investigation: Safety Guidelines for a Consumer in the Jungle of Product Differentiation

We present a graph-theoretic model of consumer choice, where final decisions are shown to be influenced by information and knowledge, in the form of individual awareness, discriminating ability, and perception of market structure. Building upon the distance-based Hotelling’s differentiation idea, we describe the behavioral experience of several prototypes of consumers, who walk a hypothetical cognitive path in an attempt to maximize their satisfaction. Our simulations show that even consumers endowed with a small amount of information and knowledge may reach a very high level of utility. On the other hand, complete ignorance negatively affects the whole consumption process. In addition, rather unexpectedly, a random walk on the graph reveals to be a winning strategy, below a minimal threshold of information and knowledge.     

Quenching of bathocuproine disulfonate fluorescence by Cu(I) as a basis for copper quantification

In this paper we report the up to now ignored fluorescence properties of the specific Cu(I)-chelator bathocuproine disulfonate and their application in assays of total copper and Cu(I). The method is based on the linear quenching of the bathocuproine disulfonate emission at 770 nm (lambda(ex)580 nm) by increasing concentrations of Cu(I), at pH 7.5. Copper concentrations as low as 0.1 microM can be determined. Other metal ions (iron, manganese, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, nickel) do not interfere. The procedure for total copper determination in proteins includes HCl treatment to release the copper, neutralization to pH 7.5 in the presence of citrate to stabilize the copper, and reduction of the copper to Cu(I) by ascorbate in the presence of the chelator. This assay gave results coincident with the analysis by atomic absorption spectroscopy in two selected proteins. In addition, conditions are described (omitting HCl treatment and reduction by ascorbate) for direct measurement of Cu(I) in native proteins, as illustrated for the Escherichia coli NADH dehydrogenase-2. Data show that the fluorometric assays described in this paper are simple and convenient procedures for total copper and direct Cu(I) quantification in determined biological samples.     

The whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) of Europe and the Mediterranean Basin

The whitefly fauna of Europe and the Mediterranean Basin comprises 56 species that are considered to be native or naturalized, accommodated within 25 genera. Presented here are a check-list, an identification key to puparia, and a brief account of each species including its distribution and host-plant range. The puparium of each species is illustrated. One new nomenclatural combination (Aleuroclava similis, from Aleurotuberculatus) and two new synonymies (Parudamoselis kesselyaki with Ceraleurodicus varus, Asterobemisia nigrini with A. paveli) are proposed. Three nominal species (Aleurodes capreae, A. fraxini, and Aleyrodes campanulae) are here treated as nomina dubia. Species which, in the study area, have only been recorded from glasshouses are discussed. Four additional species, not yet recorded from the region, are included in the discussion, two of them because a particular quarantine risk is perceived and two because they are notifiable pests in European Union quarantine legislation.
