The pseudoscorpion Paratemnoides nidificator is a generalist predator that captures large arthropods that live on tree trunks. Few pseudoscorpions species show some degree of sociality. We investigated how colonies of the pseudoscorpion P. nidificator adjust their cooperative capture behavior under a situation of changing prey types as a simulation of variation in prey availability. We hypothesized that colonies would be more efficient at prey capture under repeated exposure to the same prey, and that the change in the availability of prey would be followed by new behavioral adjustments to adequately exploit the new prey. Eight experimental colonies housed in the laboratory received repetitions of three different ant species as prey. The number of pseudoscorpions attacking the prey, the number of behavioral acts, and the time expended subduing prey were evaluated as measures of prey capture performance, in relation to repetitive exposure to the same prey and also in relation to prey type changes. However, only individuals’ recruitment significantly responded to prey type exposure. Prey capture behavior was heterogeneous among colonies, resulting in highly variable behavioral responses. Colonies showed a tendency toward increasing capture success through repeated prey type exposure. However, 50% of the colonies were unable to capture the new prey type and died of starvation. Although it is a generalist predator, prey capture behavior could depend on different coordination components for subduing and handling large prey. Therefore, changes in prey availability could cause the attenuation of a cooperative relationship in some colonies, making them more prone to failure during capture.  相似文献

This cross-sectional study aimed to identify and quantify up to 42 target species colonizing the early biofilm of dental implants restored with titanium or zirconia abutments. A total of 720 samples from 20 healthy individuals were investigated. Biofilm samples were collected from the peri-implant sulci, inner parts of implants, abutment surfaces and prosthetic crowns over a functioning period of 30 days. Checkerboard DNA–DNA hybridization was used for microbial detection and quantitation. Clinical characteristics (probing depth, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level and marginal bone loss) were also investigated during the monitoring period. Genome counts were low at the implant loading time point for both the abutment materials, and increased over time. Both the titanium and the zirconia groups presented similar microbial counts and diversity over time, and the microbiota was very similar to that colonizing the remaining teeth. Clinical findings were consistent with a healthy condition with no significant difference regarding marginal bone loss between the two materials.  相似文献

Purinergic receptors are widespread in the human organism and are involved in several physiological functions like neurotransmission, nociception, platelet aggregation, etc. In the immune system, they may regulate the expression and release of pro-inflammatory factors as well as the activation and death of several cell types. It is already described the participation of some purinergic receptors in the inflammation and pathological processes, such as a few neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) which affect more than 1 billion people in the world. Although the high social influence those diseases represent endemic countries, most of them do not have an efficient, safe or affordable drug treatment. In that way, this review aims to discuss the current literature involving purinergic receptor and immune response to NTDs pathogens, which may contribute in the search for new therapeutic possibilities.  相似文献

Mist netting is the most popular method for capturing birds, but it can increase the predation rates of individuals trapped in the nets. From 2008 to 2017, we recorded eight instances of opportunistic bird predation from mist nets (MNs) in a matrix mixing restored forest and fragments of semideciduous seasonal forest in southeastern Brazil, three times (37.5%) by exotic primates and five times (62.5%) by birds of prey. Overall predation rates (1.17–1.20%) at these two sites were considered high but were lower than in other Brazilian studies. Placing MNs near the edges of forest fragments may have allowed attacks by either forest predators or marmosets, which are exotic edge species. Some previously described precautions may decrease the predation rates of birds in MNs, such as shorter observation intervals, greater attention to given site selection and maintaining a safe distance between the MNs and the ground.  相似文献

Bananas are one of the most important fruits in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Each year, banana plantations expand, but the areas available are mostly dry lands. The establishment of strategies for obtaining drought tolerant cultivars depends on understanding of biological responses at genetic, molecular and biochemical levels. Proteomics is a powerful tool for functional characterization of the response of plants to abiotic stress and little is known about drought tolerance in Musa spp. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify proteins related to drought tolerance in two contrasting banana genotypes, Prata Anã and BRS Tropical, susceptible and tolerant to drought, respectively. Proteins were extracted from rhizomes of bananas grown under greenhouse conditions with control, irrigated and water deficit regimes. The differential protein expression pattern was established by two-dimensional (2-D) electrophoresis and spots analyzed in nano Q-Tof Micro UPLC. Twenty-three differentially expressed proteins were found in the tolerant genotype (BRS Tropical) under water deficit, with proteins involved in metabolism, defense and transport. Proteins were classified according to known function and biosynthetic pathways. Signaling proteins in response to water stress, especially for the biological function of growth and development of plants cells, were also encountered, whereas heat shock proteins played a significant role. This is the first report of proteomic analysis for drought tolerance in ‘Pome’ and ‘Silk-type’ bananas containing the ‘B’ genome. Our work provides insights into Musa spp. response to drought and data for further studies regarding molecular mechanisms, which determine how Musa spp. cells better overcome environmental perturbations.  相似文献

A strategy for detecting chromosome-specific rearrangements in rye.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To obtain translocations involving specific chromosomes in rye, a line in which chromosome 1R has large C-bands on its two telomeres but which lacks C-bands (or has very small ones) on the telomeres of the remaining chromosomes was used. About 6% of the plants produced using pollen from irradiated (1.2 krad (1 rad = 10 mGy)) spikes of this line possessed structural changes involving the labeled chromosome. These aberrations included translocations, ring chromosomes, isochromosomes, and telocentrics. It is concluded (i) that all nonlabeled chromosomes have the same probability of participating in reciprocal translocations with the labeled chromosome, 1R, and (ii) that most induced reciprocal translocations involved exchanges of chromosome segments of approximately equal length. The use of lines having the appropriate combination of telomeric C-bands improves the efficiency of obtaining reciprocal translocations involving specific chromosomes that could be used in the construction of detailed physical maps.  相似文献

Based on the individual growth, food limitation,population renewal through seeding, and individualmarketable size, a theoretical model of the culturedspecies population dynamics was used to assess thecarrying capacity of an ecosystem. It gave adome-shape curve relating the annual production andthe standing stock under the assumption of individual growth limited by the available food inan ecosystem. It also showed the influence ofmortality rate and marketable size on this curve andwas introduced as a means to explore the globalproperties resulting from the interactions betweenthe ecophysiology of the reared species and theenvironment at the ecosystem level. In a second step, an ecosystem model was built to assess the carryingcapacity of Marennes-Oléron bay, the mostimportant shellfish culture site in France, with astanding stock of Crassostrea gigas around 100000tonnes fresh weight (FW) and an annual production of30000 tonnes FW. The ecosystem model focused on theoyster growth rate and considered the interactionbetween food availability, residence time of thewater, oyster ecophysiology and number ofindividuals. It included a spatial discretization ofthe bay (box design) based on a hydrodynamic model,and the nitrogen or carbon cycling betweenphytoplankton, cultured oysters, and detritus. Fromsimulations of the oyster growth with differentseeding values, a curve relating the total annualproduction and the standing stock was obtained. Thiscurve exhibited a dome shape with a maximumproduction corresponding to an optimum standingstock. The model predicted a maximum annualproduction of 45000 tonnes FW for a standing stockaround 115000 tonnes FW. The prediction confirmedsome results obtained empirically in the case ofMarennes-Oléron bay and the results of thetheoretical model. Results were compared with thoseobtained in Carlingford Lough (Ireland) using asimilar ecosystem model. Carlingford Lough is asmall intertidal bay where the same species iscultured at a reduced scale, with current biomassless than 500 tonnes FW. The model showed that thestanding stock can be increased from 200 tonnes FWto approximately 1500 tonnes FW before any decreaseof the production. In the present work we studied the antinociceptive and antiedematogenic effects of a quinone fraction (QF) isolated from the heartwood of Auxemma oncocalyx Taub. The major constituent of QF, which represented around 80% of this fraction, was a terpenoid quinone named oncocalyxone A (1). Results show that QF (10 and 30 mg/kg body wt., i.p.) significantly inhibited paw edema induced by carrageenan at the second, third, and fourth hours. The effect was dose-dependent and long lasting, and QF was less effective orally. An antiedematogenic effect was also demonstrated in the dextran-induced paw edema. In this model, however, QF was somewhat less potent. QF (1 and 5 mg/kg body wt., i.p.) inhibited acetic acid-induced abdominal contractions in mice in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, QF (5 and 10 mg/kg body wt., i.p.) inhibited only the second phase (inflammatory) in the formalin test, and showed no effect in the hot-plate test in mice. The antinociceptive activity of QF was predominantly peripheral and independent of the opioid system. The observed effects of QF are, at least in part, probably due to the presence of oncocalyxone A (1).  相似文献
