Heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) is a disease that affects farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. several months after the fish have been transferred to seawater. Recently, a new virus called piscine reovirus (PRV) was identified in Atlantic salmon from an outbreak of HSMI and in experimentally challenged fish. PRV is associated with the development of HSMI, and has until now only been detected in Atlantic salmon. This study investigates whether the virus is also present in wild fish populations that may serve as vectors for the virus. The virus was found in few of the analyzed samples so there is probably a more complex relationship that involves several carriers and virus -reservoirs.  相似文献

The content of biologically active phenolic compounds (total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids) were determined using spectrophotometry in four wild Croatian species of Daphne L. in the family Thymelaeaceae (Daphne alpina, D. cneorum, D. laureola, and D. mezereum). The concentration of total flavonoids (TF) was highest in the leaves of these Daphne species (0.12?C0.51% dry herb weight, DW) whereas the content of other phenolic compounds analyzed were highest in the roots, including total polyphenols (TP; 2.71?C19.03% DW), tannins (T; 1.14?C7.39% DW), and total phenolic acids (TPA; 0.12?C0.87% DW). D. alpina contained the highest amount of polyphenols, with the exception of flavonoids, where maximum concentrations were found in D. laureola. We also examined the antioxidant activity of leaf, stem, and root extracts. All extracts analyzed demonstrated high free radical scavenging activity with the highest concentration in the leaf extracts of D. alpina. Leaf extracts of D. cneorum showed the highest antioxidant activity in a ??-carotene bleaching assay.  相似文献

Members of the conspicuous bone-eating genus, Osedax, are widely distributed on whale falls in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. These gutless annelids contain endosymbiotic heterotrophic bacteria in a branching root system embedded in the bones of vertebrates, whereas a trunk and anterior palps extend into the surrounding water. The unique life style within a bone environment is challenged by the high bacterial activity on, and within, the bone matrix possibly causing O(2) depletion, and build-up of potentially toxic sulphide. We measured the O(2) distribution around embedded Osedax and showed that the bone microenvironment is anoxic. Morphological studies showed that ventilation mechanisms in Osedax are restricted to the anterior palps, which are optimized for high O(2) uptake by possessing a large surface area, large surface to volume ratio, and short diffusion distances. The blood vascular system comprises large vessels in the trunk, which facilitate an ample supply of oxygenated blood from the anterior crown to a highly vascularised root structure. Respirometry studies of O. mucofloris showed a high O(2) consumption that exceeded the average O(2) consumption of a broad line of resting annelids without endosymbionts. We regard this combination of features of the respiratory system of O. mucofloris as an adaptation to their unique nutrition strategy with roots embedded in anoxic bones and elevated O(2) demand due to aerobic heterotrophic endosymbionts.  相似文献

Non-invasive genetic sampling (NGS) is increasingly used to estimate the abundance of rare or elusive species such as the wolf (Canis lupus), which cannot be directly counted in forested mountain habitats. Wolf individual and familial home ranges are wide, potentially connected by long-range dispersers, and their populations are intrinsically open. Appropriate demographic estimators are needed, because the assumptions of homogeneous detection probability and demographic closeness are violated. We compiled the capture–recapture record of 418 individual wolf genotypes identified from ca. 4,900 non-invasive samples, collected in the northern Italian Apennines from January 2002 to June 2009. We analysed this dataset using novel capture–recapture multievent models for open populations that explicitly account for individual detection heterogeneity (IDH). Overall, the detection probability of the weakly detectable individuals, probably pups, juveniles and migrants (P = 0.08), was ca. six times lower than that of the highly detectable wolves (P = 0.44), probably adults and dominants. The apparent annual survival rate of weakly detectable individuals was lower (Φ = 0.66) than those of highly detectable wolves (Φ = 0.75). The population mean annual finite rate of increase was λ = 1.05 ± 0.11, and the mean annual size ranged from N = 117 wolves in 2003 to N = 233 wolves in 2007. This procedure, combining large-scale NGS and multievent IDH demographic models, provides the first estimates of abundance, multi-annual trend and survival rates for an open large wolf population in the Apennines. These results contribute to deepen our understanding of wolf population ecology and dynamics, and provide new information to implement sound long-term conservation plans.  相似文献

Carbon steels and stainless steels are largely employed in order to build up biological purification systems of urban and industrial waste. The former are applied in building up tanks, vessels and pipes; the latter are employed in building up operator machines and appliances. This paper presents a study of the corrosion behaviour of these materials in anaerobic and aerobic environments. Tests have been carried out by continuous immersion in a biologic liquid with mixed flora. The observation of samples taken at different times of exposure has given information of great interest of application, especially about the mechanisms of localized corrosion phenomena and about the behaviour of these materials in function. Besides the presented study shows original possibilities for the assessment of the corrosion phenomenon that can be adopted and developed further still.  相似文献

The effects of whole-body exposure to ambient temperatures of −15°C and 23°C on selected performance-related physiological variables were investigated in elite nonasthmatic cross-country skiers. At an ambient temperature of −15°C we also studied the effects of the selective β2-adrenergic agonist Salbutamol (0.4 mg × 3) which was administered 10 min before the exercise test. Eight male cross-country skiers with known maximal oxygen uptakes (O2 max ) of more than 70 ml · kg−1 · min−1 participated in the study. Oxygen uptake (O2), heart rate (f c), blood lactate concentration ([La]b) and time to exhaustion were measured during controlled submaximal and maximal running on a treadmill in a climatic chamber. Lung function measured as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was recorded immediately before the warm-up period and at the conclusion of the exercise protocol. Submaximal O2 and [La]b at the two highest submaximal exercise intensities were significantly higher at −15°C than at 23°C. Time to exhaustion was significantly shorter in the cold environment. However, no differences in O2 max or f c were observed. Our results would suggest that exercise stress is higher at submaximal exercise intensities in a cold environment and support the contention that aerobic capacity is not altered by cold exposure. Furthermore, we found that after Salbutamol inhalation FEV1 was significantly higher than after placebo administration. However, the inhaled β2-agonist Salbutamol did not influence submaximal and maximal O2, f c, [La]b or time to exhaustion in the elite, nonasthmatic cross-country skiers we studied. Landscape genetics aims to investigate functional connectivity among wild populations by evaluating the impact of landscape features on gene flow. Genetic distances among populations or individuals are generally better explained by least-cost path (LCP) distances derived from resistance surfaces than by simple Euclidean distances. Resistance surfaces reflect the cost for an organism to move through particular landscape elements. However, determining the effects of landscape types on movements is challenging. Because of a general lack of empirical data on movements, resistance surfaces mostly rely on expert knowledge. Habitat-suitability models potentially provide a more objective method to estimate resistance surfaces than expert opinions, but they have rarely been applied in landscape genetics so far. We compared LCP distances based on expert knowledge with LCP distances derived from habitat-suitability models to evaluate their performance in landscape genetics. We related all LCP distances to genetic distances in linear mixed effect models on an empirical data set of wolves (Canis lupus) from Italy. All LCP distances showed highly significant (P ≤ 0.0001) standardized β coefficients and R 2 values, but LCPs from habitat-suitability models generally showed higher values than those resulting from expert knowledge. Moreover, all LCP distances better explained genetic distances than Euclidean distances, irrespective of the approaches used. Considering our results, we encourage researchers in landscape genetics to use resistance surfaces based on habitat suitability which performed better than expert-based LCPs in explaining patterns of gene flow and functional connectivity.  相似文献
