Abstract Naturally occuring betaines, especially glycine betaine and proline betaine, were accumulated by Escherichia coli from urine. In synthetic hyperosmotic medium, with an homologous series of added betaines, (CH3)3N+-(CH2) n -COO, osmoprotective activity and intracellular accumulation decreased monotonically as n increased from 1 to 5. In contrast, α -substituted glycine betaines were accumulated in a similar manner to glycine betaine, but with different osmoprotective activities. Arsenobetaine, with a quaternary arsonium group, was also accumulated but amino acids which can become negatively charged in a chemically basic environment were not.  相似文献

This study examines temporal changes in the thickness, mass, and organic carbon content of the O horizon (forest floor) of eight forested plots in northern Michigan, USA. Each plot had experienced a recent burn (prescribed or accidental); burn dates ranged from 1798 to 1980. The climax forest in this region is mixed Pinus-Acer-Betula-Tsuga, whereas the fire successional species are predominantly Populus spp. and Betula papyrifera. O horizon data were fit to logarithmic functions (chronofunctions) that depicted rapid accumulations of mass and thickness in the first years after the fire, followed by decreasing rates of increase after 100 years. Extension of the chronofunctions to 5000 years allowed for a theoretical examination of forest floor conditions, e.g., steady state and time to steady state, after long periods without disturbance. The models predicted greater O horizon thicknesses and slightly lower mass for steady state conditions than have been reported for old-growth stands elsewhere. Steady state accumulations of litter in these mixed, temperate forests requires at least 200 and possibly > 1000 years, which is markedly longer than most other estimates. Although frequent disturbance by fire in these forests would likely preclude such values from being attained, these data provide theoretical maximum values for forest floor conditions in these ecosystems.  相似文献

In this review I present results from pattern analysis and field experiments in New Jersey, United States concerning tree invasion and establishment in old fields. Hutcheson Memorial Forest Center (HMF) is the New Jersey study site and a logical choice to anchor a review of this topic. HMF contains the longest and largest old field permanent plot study in the USA including extensive data concerning tree invasion and establishment. HMF has also been the site of considerable old field tree experimental research. In addition, I review other investigations of old field tree invasion and establishment of the eastern deciduous biome and contrast them with HMF. I identify critical questions concerning tree invasion and establishment, indicate what progress has been made towards answering these questions and propose future experimentation. I also synthesize results into a conceptual model and investigate the relative importance of seed and seedling processes in determining tree dynamics in old fields. The idea of a possibility or “window” for tree invasion and establishment and its variation form the basis for this review. For example, the temporal variation of windows is reflected in tree establishment patterns at HMF because wind- and bird-dispersed species invaded one year after cessation of cultivation while mammal-dispersed species were not present until year 12. Although analysis of size classes of individual HMF trees imply that windows close quickly, studies are of too short duration to tell definitely. Spatial variation in invasion and establishment pattern includes exponential decline in seed and stem density with distance from forest edge which deteriorates with time as the old field becomes more structurally complex. Additional spatial heterogeneity occurs when seeds and seedlings of bird-dispersed species clump which conversely becomes more pronounced with time. Many of these HMF patterns are seen in other eastern United States old field sites. When reviewing field experiments from my site and others, I focus on the spatial and temporal variation and the difference between species in the effect of processes on tree seeds and seedlings. I do this because this variation relates directly to the dynamic nature of windows whose quantification is necessary for modeling. Combining my pattern analysis with a survey of variation in seed and seedling mortality caused by different successional processes in old fields, I conclude that seed dispersal, conditions necessary for seed germination and seed and seedling predation are the critical processes controlling and constraining tree invasion and establishment in old fields. Competition and indirect effects of litter and the environment, which modify how these processes affect tree dynamics, are also important. Therefore, processes involving the interaction of species with the environment and with other species form the principal filters on and limitations to tree invasion and establishment and not the non-interactive life-history traits of individual tree species such as growth rate or longevity. The interaction of pattern and process and the affect of many of these processes on old field community structure are also discussed.  相似文献

The chaperone SecB, which is involved in protein export inEscherichia coli, is shown by circular dichroism measurements to contain a high content of-pleated sheets. Prediction of the secondary structure of SecB is in good agreement with the observed content of-sheet. Summary Photosynthetic responses of the temperate seagrass, Zostera marina L., were examined by manipulations of photon flux density in an eelgrass bed in Great Harbor, Woods Hole, MA during August 1981. Sun reflectors and light shading screens were placed at shallow (1.3 m) and deep (5.5 m) stations in the eelgrass bed to increase (+35% to +40%) and decrease (-55%) ambient photon flux densities. The portion of the day that light intensities exceeding the light compensation point for Z. marina (H comp) and the light saturation point (H sat) were determined to assess the impact of the reflectors and shades. The H comp and H sat periods at the deep station shading screen were most strongly affected; H comp was reduced by 11% and H sat was reduced by 52%. Light-saturated photosynthetic rates, dark respiration rates, leaf chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a/b, PSUO 2 size, PSU density, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf turnover times and leaf production rates were determined at the end of three sets of 1- to 2-week experiments. None of the measured parameters were affected by the photon flux density manipulations at the shallow station; however, at the deep station leaf production rates were significantly reduced under the shading screen and chlorophyll a/b ratios were higher at the reflector. These results indicate that adjustment to short-term changes in light regime in Z. marina is largely by leaf production rates. Further, the most dramatic changes in the periods of compensating or saturating photon flux densities had the greatest impact on the measured photosynthetic responses.  相似文献

Evidence of a role for catecholamines in the control of breathing in fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Our current knowledge of the control of ventilation in fish is incomplete at all levels. The respiratory rhythm originates in a medullary central pattern generator (CPG), which has yet to be clearly identified and characterized. Its activity is directly modulated by inputs from elsewhere in the CNS and from peripheral mechanoreceptors. The central location of respiratory motoneurones, innervating the various respiratory muscles, has been described in detail for some fish, particularly elasmobranchs. We are still unclear, however, about the link between the CPG and the sequential firing of the motoneurones, which result in coordinated contractions of the respiratory muscles, and about the mechanisms that result in recruitment of feeding muscles into forced ventilation. In teleosts, ventilation is matched to oxygen requirements by stimulation of gill chemoreceptors, which seem to respond to oxygen content or supply. There is little evidence of a role for these receptors in elasmobranchs.Chemoreceptor stimulation evokes a number of reflex changes in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems of fish that are rapid in onset and seem adaptive (e.g. increased ventilation and a bradycardia in response to hypoxia). Conditions that result in hypoxaemia and the consequent ventilatory changes also cause an elevation in circulating catecholamine levels. We have explored the possibility of a causal relationship between these levels and the ventilatory response. Strong evidence for this relationship arises from experiments on hypoxia and acid infusion, which trigger a ventilatory increase and a rise in circulating catecholamines. Both ventilatory responses are blocked by an injection of propranolol, indicating that adrenoreceptors are involved in the response.The ventilatory response to hypoxia, in teleosts at least, occurs very rapidly, perhaps before any marked increase in circulating catecholamines and almost certainly before any blood-borne catecholamines could reach the respiratory neurones. This argues for an immediate neuronal reflex based on chemoreceptors in the gill region responding to hypoxia. Clearly, circulating catecholamines also affect ventilation through some action in the medulla and could act in concert with a direct neuronal chemoreceptive drive during hypoxia. The studies on acid infusion during hyperoxia, where there is an acidosis but no increase in ventilation or blood catecholamines, would argue against any hydrogen ion receptor, either peripheral or central, being involved in the reflex ventilatory response to acidotic conditions in fish.The release of catecholamines into the circulation, therefore, seems to be an absolute requirement for the ventilatory response to acidosis in fish. Present evidence supports a role for -adrenergic receptors on respiratory neurones, stimulated by changes in the levels of circulating catecholamines, in the control of ventilatory responses to marked changes in oxygen availability in fish, such as those occurring in the post-exercise acidotic state.  相似文献

Amide and ureide biogenic enzymes were measured in the plant fraction of soybean (Glycine max) nodules during the period 11 to 23 days after inoculation with Rhizobium japonicum (USDA 3I1b142). Enzymes involved in the initial assimilation of ammonia, i.e. glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, and aspartate aminotransferase, showed substantial increases in their specific activities over the time course. These increases paralleled the induction of nitrogenase activity in the bacteroid and leghemoglobin synthesis in the plant fraction. The specific activity of asparagine synthetase, however, showed a rapid decline after an initial increase in specific activity. Following the initial increases in the ammonia assimilatory enzymes, there was an increase in the activity of 5-phosphoribosylpyrophosphate amidotransferase, the enzyme which catalyzes the first committed step of de novo purine biosynthesis. This was followed by a dramatic increase in the purine oxidative enzymes, xanthine dehydrogenase and uricase. Smaller increases were observed in the activities of enzymes associated with the supply of metabolites to the purine biosynthetic pathway: phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase, serine hydroxymethylase, and methylene tetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase.  相似文献
