An immunosuppressive, tryptophan-derived alkaloid cristatin A (1), and two known compounds, cycloartenol and stigmasta-5,11(12)-diene-3 beta-ol, were isolated from the whole plant Lepidagathis cristata Willd. The emerging concept that various fat compartments are metabolically active and play separate and decisive roles in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis, hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes and stroke, has given obesity research a new direction. Of particular interest is the relative amount of intra-abdominal fat thought to be responsible for the metabolic complications. We studied the precise fat distribution and its correlations with the metabolic parameters in 44 non-human primates (Macaca fascicularis). Intra-abdominal, subcutaneous, and total abdominal fat (IAF, SAF, TAF) were assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and somatometry. Quantitative computer analyses of abdominal MRI scans revealed predominant IAF distribution. Box plot analysis of IAF and SAF revealed wide diversity in the amounts of fat, especially in monkeys with body mass index (BMI) <30 kg/m2. Primates with similar BMI in each quartile revealed an extensive heterogeneity in IAF as well as SAF. Numerous significant correlations within site-specific somatometric measurements as well as within the MRI determinants of abdominal fat were seen. However, only body weight correlated with IAF and skinfolds could predict SAF. After adjusting for body weight, partial correlation analysis showed a significant correlation (P<0.05) between total cholesterol and IAF. Conclusion: MRI revealed considerable heterogeneity of IAF, SAF and TAF in a cohort of primates believed to be homogeneous by somatometric definition. Male cynomolgus monkeys appear to be a valuable model for a systematic evaluation of fat. Individuals with identical body weight and height may show a diverse pattern of fat distribution.  相似文献

The incorporation of sucrose into the thermophilic fungus,Thermomyces lanuginosus, occurred only in mycelia previously exposed to sucrose or raffinose. Sucrose uptake and invertase were inducible. Both activities appeared in sucrose-induced mycelia at about the same time. Both activities declined almost simultaneously following the exhaustion of sucrose in the medium. The sucrose-induced uptake system was specific for -fructofuranosides as revealed by competition with various sugars. The induction of sucrose uptake system was blocked by cycloheximide, showing that it was dependent on new protein synthesis. Transport of sucrose did not seem to be dependent on ATP. Rather, uptake of this sugar seemed to be driven by a proton gradient across the plasma membrane. The response of luminous bacterial cultures to conditions encountered in the fish gut such as neutral pH, the presence of bile salts, gastric juice and lysozyme was examined. The organisms preferred neutral pH. Bile salts did not inhibit their growth. Neither lysozyme nor gastric juice affected their growth and viability to any extent. In the light of these findings, the adaptability of luminous bacteria to conditions existing in the gut of fish was discussed.  相似文献

The patterns of protein fractions from total salivary glands and from glue plugs were compared in seven members of the Drosophila nasuta subgroup by the use of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The glue protein patterns are member specific concerning the numbers and the electrophoretic mobilities of major and minor glue protein fractions. However, the major fractions of all subgroup members could be grouped into five SDS-PAGE domains according to the homologies of their electrophoretic mobilities, prominence of Coomassie blue staining, and PAS reaction. In all subgroup members, major fractions are involved in posttranslational modifications into larger protein molecules of the final glue. Quantitative estimations of the glue proteins in D. n. nasuta and D. n. albomicans reveal that they constitute between 55 and 60% of the total salivary gland proteins, whereas in D. melanogaster and in D. hydei the fraction is only 32 and 35%, respectively.  相似文献

The cross-reactions of rat kidney with P. mirabilis and E. coli, and of rat urinary bladder with P. mirabilis were established by precipitation, agglutination and immunofluorescence methods. One of the cross-reactive bacterial components was the lipopolysaccharide. Human erythrocytes of Blood-groups A, O and AB were agglutinated by antisera to P. mirabilis and E. coli. The role of antigenic relatedness in urinary tract infections is discussed.  相似文献

Bacillus subtilis α-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) has been immobilized on zirconia-coated alkylamine glass by using the process of glutaraldehyde coupling. The immobilized enzyme preparation exhibited 52% of the initial enzyme activity and a conjugation yield of 28 mg/g support. The Km value of the immobilized α-amylase was decreased by immobilization while Vmax was unaltered. Ea of the enzyme was decreased upon conjugation. The soluble enzyme was optimally active at pH 5.6 while the immobilized enzyme exhibited optimal activity in the pH range 5.4–6.2. The alkylamine-immobilized enzyme has also been characterized through its isoelectric point. The industrial importance of this work is discussed.  相似文献

During the symposium Restoration and recovery of shallow lake ecosystems in The Netherlands studies on restoration of eutrophic lakes were addressed and discussed. Many Dutch shallow lakes have received high external loadings of phosphorus through supply water that is influenced by the River Rhine and loadings in The Netherlands. Two important Action Plans (the Rhine Action Plan, the North Sea Action Plan) are now in operation to reduce nutrient emissions. The targets set are not likely to be fully reached, so that supplementary reduction of phosphorus supplied to inland fresh waters will be required. In several shallow lakes such a reduction has been achieved recently, but without leading to discernible recovery. The main causes of delay are phosphorus storage and its subsequent release from sediments and foodweb; however, the remaining extraneous phosphorus supply is often still too high. Supplementary actions are, therefore, called for. A further reduction of phosphorus inputs is suggested, besides supplementary measures proposed, viz. dredging, flushing, biomanipulation, chemomanipulation. Restoration to the past situation via upwelling groundwater appeares to be feasible in some cases. There is a common consensus that each lake behaves differently depending to its morphology, hydrology and history of eutrophication. Therefore each lake has to be studied before restoration measures can be applied. Besides, the ecosystem should not only be studied as a separate entity, but as a part of systems of a higher integration level.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the developmental duration ofCryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant was quantified by deriving a regression equation for each developmental stage as well as the total life cycle. While the duration of life stages was shorter during summer and longer during winter, the optimum constant temperature for maximal development was found to be 30°C. The adult longevity was extended when reared at 20°C than at 30°C and ambient temperature. The longevity of adults was longer when maintained on grape mealybugMaconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) than on honey and when maintained at 20°C. The fecundity of the predator was higher at 30°C than at 20°C. Eventhough the adults could survive at 10°C, the productive capacity was impaired.   相似文献
