BACKGROUND: Data pertaining to birth defects are subject to certain limitations depending on the collection method. This study compares the agreement of data from medical records and maternal interviews. METHODS: The medical records and maternal interviews were linked for 1017 deliveries. Prevalence, concordance and kappa coefficients were calculated for maternal gestational and non-gestational diabetes, insulin use, seizures/epilepsy, Hispanic ethnicity, and infant/fetus sex. RESULTS: The prevalence of non-gestational diabetes was 4.3% in the medical records and 3.4% in the maternal interviews, with 98.1% agreement. The prevalence of gestational diabetes was 7.9% in medical records and 9.2% in maternal interviews, with 94.3% agreement. Similar prevalences and high levels of agreement were observed between the two systems for infant/fetus sex and mother's Hispanic ethnicity. Although high concordance was observed for seizures/epilepsy, kappa value was moderate. CONCLUSIONS: The availability of two distinct sources of data provides an exceptional opportunity to compare and validate both data sources. We found that the data for certain variables from maternal interviews strongly agreed with information from medical records. However, the extent of that agreement depended on the type of variable measured. Our results suggest that for some variables such as demographic variables, researchers can use either of the two data sources.  相似文献

We cloned a gene, kexD, that provides a multidrug-resistant phenotype from multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae MGH78578. The deduced amino acid sequence of KexD is similar to that of the inner membrane protein, RND-type multidrug efflux pump. Introduction of the kexD gene into Escherichia coli KAM32 resulted in a MIC that was higher for erythromycin, novobiocin, rhodamine 6G, tetraphenylphosphonium chloride, and ethidium bromide than that of the control. Intracellular ethidium bromide levels in E. coli cells carrying the kexD gene were lower than that in the control cells under energized conditions, suggesting that KexD is a component of an energy-dependent efflux pump. RND-type pumps typically consist of three components: an inner membrane protein, a periplasmic protein, and an outer membrane protein. We discovered that KexD functions with a periplasmic protein, AcrA, from E. coli and K. pneumoniae, but not with the periplasmic proteins KexA and KexG from K. pneumoniae. KexD was able to utilize either TolC of E. coli or KocC of K. pneumoniae as an outer membrane component. kexD mRNA was not detected in K. pneumoniae MGH78578 or ATCC10031. We isolated erythromycin-resistant mutants from K. pneumoniae ATCC10031, and some showed a multidrug-resistant phenotype similar to the drug resistance pattern of KexD. Two strains of multidrug-resistant mutants were investigated for kexD expression; kexD mRNA levels were increased in these strains. We conclude that changing kexD expression can contribute to the occurrence of multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae.  相似文献

BACKGROUND : We used data from the multisite National Birth Defects Prevention Study for expected delivery dates from October 1997 through 2003, to determine whether the increased risk in anencephaly and spina bifida (neural tube defects (NTDs)) in Hispanics was explained by selected sociodemographic, acculturation, and other maternal characteristics. METHODS : For each type of defect, we examined the association with selected maternal characteristics stratified by race/ethnicity and the association with Hispanic parents' acculturation level, relative to non‐Hispanic whites. We used logistic regression and calculated crude odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS : Hispanic mothers who reported the highest level of income were 80% less likely to deliver babies with spina bifida. In addition, highly educated Hispanic and white mothers had 76 and 35% lower risk, respectively. Other factors showing differing effects for spina bifida in Hispanics included maternal age, parity, and gestational diabetes. For spina bifida there was no significant elevated risk for U.S.–born Hispanics, relative to whites, but for anencephaly, corresponding ORs ranged from 1.9 to 2.3. The highest risk for spina bifida was observed for recent Hispanic immigrant parents from Mexico or Central America residing in the United States <5 years (OR = 3.28, 95% CI = 1.46–7.37). CONCLUSIONS : Less acculturated Hispanic parents seemed to be at highest risk of NTDs. For anencephaly, U.S.–born and English‐speaking Hispanic parents were also at increased risk. Finally, from an etiologic standpoint, spina bifida and anencephaly appeared to be etiologically heterogeneous from these analyses. BACKGROUND: Literature on the risk of birth defects among foreign‐ versus U.S.–born Hispanics is limited or inconsistent. We examined the association between country of birth, immigration patterns, and birth defects among Hispanic mothers. METHODS: We used data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study and calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals and assessed the relationship between mothers' country of birth, years lived in the United States, and birth defects among 575 foreign‐born compared to 539 U.S.–born Hispanic mothers. RESULTS: Hispanic mothers born in Mexico/Central America were more likely to deliver babies with spina bifida (OR = 1.53) than their U.S.–born counterparts. Also, mothers born in Mexico/Central America or who were recent United States immigrants (≤5 years) were less likely to deliver babies with all atrial septal defects combined, all septal defects combined, or atrial septal defect, secundum type. However, Hispanic foreign‐born mothers who lived in the United States for >5 years were more likely to deliver babies with all neural tube defects combined (OR = 1.42), spina bifida (OR = 1.89), and longitudinal limb defects (OR = 2.34). Foreign‐born mothers, regardless of their number of years lived in the United States, were more likely to deliver babies with anotia or microtia. CONCLUSIONS: Depending on the type of birth defect, foreign‐born Hispanic mothers might be at higher or lower risk of delivering babies with the defects. The differences might reflect variations in predisposition, cultural norms, behavioral characteristics, and/or ascertainment of the birth defects. Lentinus edodes and Pleurotus species from various origins were compared for the first time for their ability to produce lignocellulolytic enzyme in solid-state (SSF) and submerged (SF) fermentation of various plant raw material. Fungi cultivation in identical culture conditions revealed wide differences among both species and strains of the same species. The yields of CMCase (62.3Uml(-1)), xylanase (84.1 U ml(-1)), FPA (5.9 U ml(-1)), and laccase (4103 Ul(-1)) are the best so far obtained with the strains of oyster mushrooms. The study pointed out that the nature of lignocellulosic material and the method of fungi cultivation are factors determining the expression of lignocellulolytic potential of fungi as well as the ratio of individual enzymes in enzyme complex. SSF of tree leaves is favorable for laccase and MnP secretion by the majority L. edodes and Pleurotus strains, whereas SF provides better production of hydrolytic enzymes.  相似文献

Elevated CO 2 enhances the photosynthesis and growth of hybrid larch F 1 seedlings. However, elevated CO 2 -induced change of tree shape may have risk to the other environmental stresses.

Abstract

The hybrid larch F1 (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × L. kaempferi) is one of the most promising species for timber production as well as absorption of atmospheric CO2. To assess the ability of this species in the future high CO2 environment, we investigated the growth and photosynthetic response of hybrid larch F1 seedlings to elevated CO2 concentration. Three-year-old seedlings of hybrid larch F1 were grown on fertile brown forest soil or infertile volcanic ash soil, and exposed to 500 μmol mol?1 CO2 in a free-air CO2 enrichment system located in northern Japan for two growing seasons. Regardless of soil type, the exposure to elevated CO2 did not affect photosynthetic traits in the first and second growing seasons; a higher net photosynthetic rate was maintained under elevated CO2. Growth of the seedlings under elevated CO2 was greater than that under ambient CO2. We found that elevated CO2 induced a change in the shape of seedlings: small roots, slender-shaped stems and long-shoots. These results suggest that elevated CO2 stimulates the growth of hybrid larch F1, although the change in tree shape may increase the risk of other stresses, such as strong winds, heavy snow, and nutrient deficiency.  相似文献

A 2.4-year-old male chimpanzee in the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania became separated from his mother probably because of contagion of the flu-like sickness. He was adopted alternately by two unrelated immigrant females for at least six days before he was reunited with his mother. This episode is described and analyzed in relation to the babysitter relationships among female chimpanzees. The adaptive significance of the babysitting behavior of nulliparous females is discussed.  相似文献

Eighteen predatory and two cannibalistic episodes have been observed among wild chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains. The prey consists mainly of juveniles of medium-sized mammals, six species of which were recorded as prey fauna for the first time in this study. Predatory behavior of Mahale chimpanzees seems more opportunistic and primitive than has ever been observed in the Gombe National Park in terms of capture technique, size of prey, co-operation in hunting, sexual difference in capture frequency, degree of consumption and extent of meat sharing. Cannibalism is an inter-unit-group phenomenon and may be an extension of infanticide, which may function in changing “mother” into “female.” This study was financed mainly by the Overseas Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education, Japan and partly by the Japan International Co-operation Agency and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Tanzania.  相似文献

Bioplastics were developed to overcome environmental problems that are difficult to decompose in the environment. This study analyzes Thai cassava starch-based bioplastics' tensile strength, biodegradability, moisture absorption, and thermal stability. This study used Thai cassava starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as matrices, whereas Kepok banana bunch cellulose was employed as a filler. The ratios between starch and cellulose are 10:0 (S1), 9:1 (S2), 8:2 (S3), 7:3 (S4), and 6:4 (S5), while PVA was set constant. The tensile test showed the S4 sample's highest tensile strength of 6.26 MPa, a strain of 3.85%, and a modulus of elasticity of 166 MPa. After 15 days, the maximum soil degradation rate in the S1 sample was 27.9%. The lowest moisture absorption was found in the S5 sample at 8.43%. The highest thermal stability was observed in S4 (316.8°C). This result was significant in reducing the production of plastic waste for environmental remediation.  相似文献
