In intensively cultivated landscapes, the effects of land use – changing habitat quality and habitat availability - on wildlife populations are of major importance for wildlife management. Populations of some species reach high densities, grow rapidly, and can therefore cause damage to tree regeneration in forests; chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is an example. Other species, like capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), suffer from substantial habitat loss resulting in a population decline. Consequently, the number of individuals and the quality of habitat are of crucial relevance for the development of wildlife management concepts. It is critical to know, which areas provide suitable habitat conditions for a species, and what quantity and quality of habitat is required to achieve a certain population size.

In order to evaluate habitat quality and to link wildlife research to practical habitat management, an integrated habitat management model has been designed. The model is based on a multi-dimensional habitat analysis which employs different methodological levels, which were defined according to different spatial scales. On a country scale (level 1), the wildlife ecological landscape type (WELT) is introduced. For this study the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is divided into units which represent distinct regions with similar landscape ecological habitat conditions for wildlife species. On an eco-regional scale (level 2), the landscape ecological habitat potential (LEHP) was developed. It is based on the evaluation of species-related landscape parameters within an exemplary eco-region and provides information about the potential habitat available to a population. On two local scales (level 3: forest district, level 4: forest stand), a habitat structure analysis was conducted, which serves as a foundation for habitat improvement and the monitoring of habitat conditions. The three methodological elements WELT, LEHP and habitat structure analysis were integrated into a habitat management model. The model uses chamois and capercaillie as examples, but can be equally applied to other species and wildlife management regimes.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that Daphnia is more susceptible to the inhibitory effects of filamentous cyanobacteria than small cladocerans since daphnids have a larger gape size and filtrate the filaments, whereas small cladocerans do not. This study addresses the question whether food limitation has the potential to modify this scenario of cladoceran response to dominance of non-toxic filamentous cyanobacteria. Daphnia galeatawas grown under limited (0.1 mg C l–1) and unlimited concentrations (1.0 mg C l–1) of high-quality food algae both in the absence/presence of non-toxic filamentous Aphanizomenon flexuosum. As the effects of these cyanobacteria on D. galeatawere positive under food limiting conditions and negative at the high food density, it was concluded that D. galeatawas mainly affected by nutritional quality due to its ability to ingest the filaments, while mechanical interference with food collection was not important. In competition experiments between D. galeataand Bosmina longirostris, D. galeatawas the dominant species at regular additions of food (1.0 mg C l–1) in the absence of Aphanizomenon. In the presence of these cyanobacteria, D. galeatawas inhibited during the first days of the experimental period. However, the negative effect at the initially high food density was outweighed by nutrition at food limiting conditions and the outcome in competitive dominance was not changed. The results demonstrate that the ability of D. galeata to ingest large-sized non-toxic cyanobacteria can be considered as advantageous under food limiting conditions.  相似文献

In a comparative study the requirement of several strains of autotrophic hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria for nickel was examined. Autotrophic growth was studied both in liquid media, previously freed from trace metals; and on solidified media, using a plate diffusion assay. The latter assay was based on the observation that EDTA causes complete inhibition of autotrophic growth on agar medium as a result of nickel deficiency. Nickel was shown to be required as a trace element in five strains of Alcaligenes eutrophus, in two strains of Xanthobacter autotrophicus, in Pseudomonas flava, in Arthrobacter spec. 11X and in strain 12X. In these bacteria nickel was not replaceable by cobalt, copper, manganese or zinc ions. No significant nickel requirement was detected by these methods, however, for Paracoccus denitrificans and Nocardia opaca 1b.  相似文献

Summary A method for the rapid determination of the lengths and surface areas of very large samples of needles of Picea abies (L.) Karst. using a computer-aided image analysis system was developed. Two independent methods for measuring non-destructively the volumes of individual needles and of all needles attached to a twig were devised. The surface areas and lengths of about 38000 needles sampled from the three youngest needle age-classes (1986, 1985, 1984) of 48 trees approximately 130 years old at four sites in the Fichtelgebirge mountains (N. E. Bavaria, FRG) were measured. The frequency distributions of lengths and areas for each site and age-class are given. Variability of needle size was fairly large. Even though the sites differed in climate, soil, and air pollution levels no consistent effect of these factors on needle size could be detected. Needle lengths and surface areas did not correlate with either the total chlorophyll content of the needles or the degree of crown thinning. The needle surface area (in mm2) of fully developed P. abies needles can be estimated by the empirical equation surface area = 4.440 x needle length -24.8 (r = 0.937), and the needle volume (in mm3) by needle volume = 0.208 x projected needle area 1.353 (r = 0.969).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of Pantoea agglomerans, a plant growth-promoting bacterium, to colonize various regions and tissues of the wheat plant (Triticum aestivum L.) by using different inoculation methods and inoculum concentrations. In addition, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to determine: (a) the ability of the bacterial cells to grow and survive both on the surface and within internal tissue of the plant and (b) the response of the plant to bacterial infection. After inoculation, cells of the diazotrophic bacterial strain P. agglomerans were found to be located in roots, stems and leaves. Colony development of bacterial cells was only detected within intercellular spaces of the root and on the root surface. However, single bacterial cells were observed in leaves and stems on the surface of the epidermis, in the vicinity to stomatal cells, within intercellular spaces of the mesophyll and within xylem vessels. Inoculated bacterial cells were found to be able to enter host tissues, to multiply in the plant and to maintain a delicate relationship between endophyte and host. The density of bacterial settlement in the plant in all experiments was about 106 to 107 cells per mL root or shoot sap. Establishment was confirmed by a low coefficient of variation of ELISA means at these concentrations.  相似文献

Many steps of peripheral glia development appear to be regulated by neuregulin1 (NRG1) signaling but the exact roles of the different NRG1 isoforms in these processes remain to be determined. While glial growth factor 2 (GGF2), a NRG1 type II isoform, is able to induce a satellite glial fate in neural crest stem cells, targeted mutations in mice have revealed a prominent role of NRG1 type III isoforms in supporting survival of Schwann cells at early developmental stages. Here, we investigated the role of NRG1 isoforms in the differentiation of Schwann cells from neural crest-derived progenitor cells. In multipotent cells isolated from dorsal root ganglia, soluble NRG1 isoforms do not promote Schwann cell features, whereas signaling by membrane-associated NRG1 type III induces the expression of the Schwann cell markers Oct-6/SCIP and S100 in neighboring cells, independent of survival. Thus, axon-bound NRG1 might actively promote both Schwann cell survival and differentiation.  相似文献

Thymoquinone (TQ; 1 ) is a weak anticancer constituent of black seed oil. Derivatives bearing terpene‐terminated 6‐alkyl residues were tested in cells of human HL‐60 leukemia, 518A2 melanoma, multidrug‐resistant KB‐V1/Vbl cervix, and MCF‐7/Topo breast carcinomas, as well as in non‐malignant human foreskin fibroblasts. Derivatives with a short four‐atom spacer between quinone and cyclic monoterpene moieties were more antiproliferative than analogues with longer spacers. 6‐(Menthoxybutyryl)thymoquinone ( 3a ) exhibited single‐digit micromolar IC50 (72 h) values in all four cell lines. It was seven times more active than TQ ( 1 ) in 518A2 melanoma cells and four times in KB‐V1/Vbl cervix carcinoma cells, while only half as toxic in the fibroblasts. Compound 3a was also not a substrate for the P‐gp and BCRP drug transporters of the resistant cancer cells. The caryophyllyl and germacryl conjugates 3e and 3f specifically inhibited the growth of the resistant MCF‐7 breast carcinoma cells. Conjugation of TQ with the triterpene betulinic acid via the OH group as in 3g led to a loss in activity, while conjugation via the carboxylic acid afforded compound 4 with nanomolar IC50 (72 h) activity against HL‐60 cells. All anticancer‐active derivatives of TQ ( 1 ) induced apoptosis associated with DNA laddering, a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and a slight increase in reactive oxygen species.  相似文献
