Summary Reissner's fibre and the subcommisssural cells mainly from Myxine were investigated by light and electron microscope methods. The subcommissural cells carry several cilia and produce a chrome haematoxyphile secretion in the form of granules. It is probable that the nucleus as well as the mitochondria are involved in the synthesis of this material. The secretory release suggests an apocrine type in which the granules swell and form a fine-granulated, chrome haematoxyphile substance in the ventricle. Caudally in the subcommissural canal this material condenses to form Reissner's fibre, which in electron micrographs, except for a fine-granulated ground substance, does not show any structures, a limiting membrane or traces of cell organelles or remnants.Aided by grants from the Swedish Natural Science Research Council.  相似文献

Time series of environmental measurements are essential for detecting, measuring and understanding changes in the Earth system and its biological communities. Observational series have accumulated over the past 2–5 decades from measurements across the world's estuaries, bays, lagoons, inland seas and shelf waters influenced by runoff. We synthesize information contained in these time series to develop a global view of changes occurring in marine systems influenced by connectivity to land. Our review is organized around four themes: (i) human activities as drivers of change; (ii) variability of the climate system as a driver of change; (iii) successes, disappointments and challenges of managing change at the sea‐land interface; and (iv) discoveries made from observations over time. Multidecadal time series reveal that many of the world's estuarine–coastal ecosystems are in a continuing state of change, and the pace of change is faster than we could have imagined a decade ago. Some have been transformed into novel ecosystems with habitats, biogeochemistry and biological communities outside the natural range of variability. Change takes many forms including linear and nonlinear trends, abrupt state changes and oscillations. The challenge of managing change is daunting in the coastal zone where diverse human pressures are concentrated and intersect with different responses to climate variability over land and over ocean basins. The pace of change in estuarine–coastal ecosystems will likely accelerate as the human population and economies continue to grow and as global climate change accelerates. Wise stewardship of the resources upon which we depend is critically dependent upon a continuing flow of information from observations to measure, understand and anticipate future changes along the world's coastlines.  相似文献

Context: Large epidemiological studies often collect non-fasting samples, although the reliability of biomarkers may be uncertain.

Objective: To explore the reliability and reproducibility of a single measurement of selected biomarkers in a sub-sample of the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort.

Methods: We estimated single- and average-measures intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for oxidized (ox)-LDL, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α.

Results: Single-measures ICC in non-fasting samples of ox-LDL, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α were the following: 0.85, 0.71, 0.61, 0.78 and 0.66 for men, and 0.67, 0.81, 0.87, 0.69 and 0.81 for women. Biomarkers at non-fasting and fasting samples were highly correlated (all r?>?0.80).

Conclusions: The observed ICC suggest that most of the examined biomarkers (non-fasting blood) would allow meaningful analysis in epidemiological studies.  相似文献

The influence of subnormal temperatures (2, 15 and 28 degrees C) on the effects of radiation in MCF-7 cell cultures was studied using the fluorescent (halo) nucleoid assay. Increasing the propidium iodide (PI) concentration (0.5-7.5 microgram/ml PI) resulted in relaxation, i.e. in increasing nucleoid area; higher concentrations up to 50 microgram/ml caused rewinding that resulted in nucleoid contraction. Rewinding was inhibited by X irradiation (2, 4 and 8 Gy) in a dose-dependent way. Incubation at subnormal temperature did not influence the nucleoid area but did reduce radiation-induced inhibition of rewinding after 4 Gy. The low temperature (2 degrees C) during rather than prior to irradiation appeared to protect from radiation-induced inhibition of nucleoid rewinding. Decreased temperature during irradiation may change the conditions so as to reduce DNA- matrix damage induced by radiation.  相似文献

Bosmina (Cladocera) populations, especially within the subgenus Eubosmina, show a variety of phenotypes that exhibit large differences in body size and shape and antennule length. In some populations, the morphological traits also vary during the season, with the most extreme forms occurring in periods with high densities of certain invertebrate predators. However, while temporal phenotypic variation in other cladocerans, as in the family Daphnidae, has been shown to be an adaptation to reduce the risk of predation by invertebrate predators, the reason for such changes in Bosmina is much less clear. We examined whether certain morphological traits in Bosmina species could act as a defence against invertebrate predators. We tested three Bosmina forms (subgenus Eubosmina), differing in morphology from each other, which are found in lakes together with the predator Leptodora kindtii (Cladocera). Bosmina (E.) longispina has a relatively low and elongated carapace with a caudal mucro, and short antennule, B. (E.) coregoni gibbera has a higher and more protruding carapace without caudal mucro, and a much longer antennule. Finally, B. (E.) coregoni retro extensa has a carapace like that of B. longispina but with no caudal mucro and a much longer antennule. In one experiment, B. longispina and B. gibbera were exposed for 12 h to Leptodora in Petri dishes. In a second experiment, we observed directly the escape efficiency of B. longispina, B. gibbera and B. retro extensa, and the handling time of Leptodora. The two Bosmina forms with more extreme morphological features had a lower death rate and higher escape efficiency than B. longispina. Prey that escaped did so, in most cases, within 5 min. Predator handling time was correlated to predator body length and antennule length of the prey. Benthic communities below the photic zone depend for food on allochthonous organic matter derived from seasonal phytoplankton blooms. In the Baltic Sea, the spring diatom bloom is considered the most important input of organic matter, whereas the contribution of the summer bloom dominated by diazotrophic cyanobacteria is less understood. The possible increase in cyanobacteria blooms as a consequence of eutrophication and climate change calls for evaluation of cyanobacteria effects on benthic community functioning and productivity. Here, we examine utilization of cyanobacterial nitrogen by deposit-feeding benthic macrofauna following a cyanobacteria bloom at three stations during two consecutive years and link these changes to isotopic niche and variations in body condition (assayed as C:N ratio) of the animals. Since nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria have δ15N close to -2‰, we expected the δ15N in the deposit-feeders to decrease after the bloom if their assimilation of cyanobacteria-derived nitrogen was substantial. We also expected the settled cyanobacteria with their associated microheterotrophic community and relatively high nitrogen content to increase the isotopic niche area, trophic diversity and dietary divergence between individuals (estimated as the nearest neighbour distance) in the benthic fauna after the bloom. The three surface-feeding species (Monoporeia affinis, Macoma balthica and Marenzelleria arctia) showed significantly lower δ15N values after the bloom, while the sub-surface feeder Pontoporeia femorata did not. The effect of the bloom on isotopic niche varied greatly between stations; populations which increased niche area after the bloom had better body condition than populations with reduced niche, regardless of species. Thus, cyanobacterial nitrogen is efficiently integrated into the benthic food webs in the Baltic, with likely consequences for their functioning, secondary production, transfer efficiency, trophic interactions, and intra- and interspecific competition.  相似文献
