The haplodiploid genetic system found in all Hymenopterans creates an asymmetry in genetic relatedness so that full-sisters are more closely related to each other than a mother is to her daughters. Thus Hymenopteran workers who rear siblings can obtain higher inclusive fitness compared to individuals who rear offspring. However, polyandry and polygyny reduce relatedness between workers and their sisters and thus tend to break down the genetic asymmetry created by haplodiploidy. Since the advent of electrophoretic analysis of variability at enzyme loci, several estimates of intra-colony genetic relatedness in the Hymenoptera have been published. To test the role of the genetic asymmetry created by haplodiploidy in the evolution of eusociality, I assume that workers are capable of investing in their brothers and sisters in their ratio of relatedness to them. I then compute ahaplodiploidy threshold, which is the threshold relatedness to sisters required for workers to obtain a weighted mean relatedness of 0.5 to siblings and thus break even with solitary foundresses. When workers rear mixtures of sisters and brothers in an outbred population, the value of this threshold is 0.604. An examination of the distribution of 185 estimates of mean genetic relatedness between sisters in Hymenopteran colonies shows that the values are well below the expected 0.75 for full sisters, both in higly eusocial as well as in primitively eusocial species although relatedness values in the latter are higher than in the former. Of the 177 estimates with standard error, 49 are significantly lower than the haplodiploidy threshold and 22 are significantly higher. Of the 35 species studied only 6 have one or more estimates that are significantly higher than the haplodiploidy threshold. For more than half the estimates, the probability of the relatedness value being above the haplodiploidy threshold is less than 0.5. Reanalysis of these data using 0.5 as the threshold does not drastically alter these conclusions. I conclude that the genetic asymmetry created by haplodiploidy is, in most cases, insufficient by itself either topromote the origin of eusociality or tomaintain the highly eusocial state.  相似文献

To identify the sequences involved in the expression of the fragile X and to characterize the molecular basis of the genetic lesion, we have constructed yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) containing human DNA and have screened them with cloned DNA probes which map close to the fragile site at Xq27.3. We have isolated and partly characterized a YAC containing approximately 270 kb of human DNA from an X chromosome which expresses the fragile X. This sequence in a yeast artificial ring chromosome, XTY26, hybridizes to the two closest DNA markers, VK16 and Do33, which flank the fragile site. The human DNA sequence in XTY26 also spans the fragile site on chromosome in situ hybridization. When a restriction map of XTY26, derived by using infrequently cutting restriction enzymes, is compared with similar YAC maps derived from non-fragile-X patients, no large-scale differences are observed. This YAC, XTY26, may enable (a) the fragile site to be fully characterized at the molecular level and (b) the pathogenetic basis of the fragile-X syndrome to be determined.  相似文献

Ruminal microbial populations, fermentation characteristics, digestibility, and liquid flow rates in two ruminally cannulated bison and two ruminally cannulated Hereford steers fed a prairie hay diet were compared. No significant differences in anaerobic bacterial counts, volatile fatty acid concentrations, or ruminal pHs were evident between bison and cattle. Also, no significant differences in neutral detergent fiber digestibility, indigestible fiber retention time, or intake were detected between bison and cattle, although cattle had higher levels (P less than 0.08) of ruminal dry matter and indigestible fiber than bison. Bison had a smaller (P = .02) ruminoreticular volume, faster liquid dilution rates, and faster liquid turnover times than cattle. The average ruminal ammonia nitrogen concentration was higher (P = 0.02) in bison (1.17 mg/dl) than in cattle (0.79 mg/dl). Total ciliate protozoal counts and cell volume were greater (P = 0.07) in bison (32.8 x 10(4)/g and 407.1 x 10(-4) ml/g, respectively) than in cattle (15.7 x 10(4)/g and 162.2 x 10(-4) ml/g, respectively). Bison harbored higher (P less than 0.02) numbers of Dasytricha spp., Eudiplodinium maggii, Eudiplodinium bursa, and Epidinium spp. than cattle and possessed a type B protozoan population. The cattle possessed a mixed type A-type B population that was characterized by Ophryoscolex spp. and Polyplastron spp. in association with low concentrations of Epidinium spp. and Eudiplodinium maggii.  相似文献

Understanding the network structure of long distance pathways in the brain is a necessary step towards developing an insight into the brain’s function, organization and evolution. Dense global subnetworks of these pathways have often been studied, primarily due to their functional implications. Instead we study sparse local subnetworks of the pathways to establish the role of a brain area in enabling shortest path communication between its non-adjacent topological neighbours. We propose a novel metric to measure the topological communication load on a vertex due to its immediate neighbourhood, and show that in terms of distribution of this local communication load, a network of Macaque long distance pathways is substantially different from other real world networks and random graph models. Macaque network contains the entire range of local subnetworks, from star-like networks to clique-like networks, while other networks tend to contain a relatively small range of subnetworks. Further, sparse local subnetworks in the Macaque network are not only found across topographical super-areas, e.g., lobes, but also within a super-area, arguing that there is conservation of even relatively short-distance pathways. To establish the communication role of a vertex we borrow the concept of brokerage from social science, and present the different types of brokerage roles that brain areas play, highlighting that not only the thalamus, but also cingulate gyrus and insula often act as “relays” for areas in the neocortex. These and other analysis of communication load and roles of the sparse subnetworks of the Macaque brain provide new insights into the organisation of its pathways.  相似文献

Examination of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anatomy is of great interest both in studying injury mechanisms and surgical reconstruction. However, after a typical acute ACL rupture it is not possible to measure the dimensions of the ACL itself due to concomitant or subsequent degeneration of the remaining ligamentous tissue. The contralateral ACL may be an appropriate surrogate for measuring anatomical dimensions, but it remains unknown whether side-to-side differences preclude using the contralateral as a valid surrogate for the ruptured ACL. This study examined whether the ACL volume is significantly different between the left and right knees of uninjured subjects. ACL volumes were calculated for the left and right sides of 28 individuals using a previously validated MRI-based method. The mean ACL volume was not significantly different (p=0.2331) between the two sides in this population. Side-to-side ACL volume was also well correlated (correlation=0.91, p<0.0001). The results of this study show that the volume of the contralateral ACL is a valid surrogate measure for a missing ACL on the injured side. This non-invasive, in vivo technique for measuring ACL volume may prove useful in future large-scale comprehensive studies of potential risk factors for ACL rupture, in quantifying potential loading effects on ACL size as a prophylactic measure against ACL rupture, and in the use of ACL volume as a screening tool for assessing risk of injury.  相似文献

The laboratory strains of Haemophilus parainfluenzae and Haemophilus haemolyticus that are commonly used as restriction enzyme sources carry several small multicopy plasmids. H. parainfluenzae carries plasmids pKC1, pKC2, and pKC3 of sizes 1.50, 2.86, and 3.84 kb, respectively, as determined by gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy. H. haemolyticus carries plasmids pKC4 and pKC5 of sizes 1.3 and 1.7 kb as determined by gel electrophoresis. At least two of the plasmids pKC1 and pKC4 were successfully transferred into E. coli by cotransfection with plasmid pBR322. They are compatible with pBR322 and have a comparable copy number.  相似文献

Developmental morphometry, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the accessory gland secretory proteins, fecundity and productivity in relation to protein ejected during subsequent (first to fourth-time) matings have been studied in Drosophila ananassae Doleschall and Drosophila varians Bock. In both species, size and secretion of accessory glands increases from 1 to 8 days and the stored secretion ejected from males to the female genital tract during subsequent mating varies. The maximum number of eggs and flies are produced from the females mated with bachelor males and it is a minimum when virgin females are mated with fourth-time mated males. Sodium dodecylsulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of accessory gland secretory protein patterns and their glycosylation differs in both the species. Correlation coefficient analysis between gland size and quantity of secretion, percentage of secretory protein transferred per mating, and eggs and flies that emerged showed a highly significant, positive relationship. Among different matings, the number of eggs laid and flies that emerged per female between subsequent (first to fourth-time) matings of males was found to be highly significant and the difference between fecundity and productivity between the two species was highly significant.  相似文献

Among the antifungal compounds from Aplysina fistularis, 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone (DBQ) was the most potent inhibitor of wheat germ RNA polymerase II (Ribonucleosidetriphosphate: RNA nucleotidyltransferase, EC 2.7.7.6). DBQ appeared to inhibit the enzyme activity by binding to the enzyme but not to the DNA template. DNA offered slight protection to the enzyme against the inhibitor. Chain initiation was more sensitive to the inhibitor than chain elongation. No enzymatic activity was detected in fractions from a Sephadex G-25 column that contained polymerase which had been preincubated with DBQ, and if the DBQ was labeled with C14, the radioactivity co-chromatographed with the polymerase.  相似文献

High serum uric acid levels elevate pro-inflammatory–state gout crystal arthropathy and place individuals at high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Genome-wide scans in the genetically isolated Sardinian population identified variants associated with serum uric acid levels as a quantitative trait. They mapped within GLUT9, a Chromosome 4 glucose transporter gene predominantly expressed in liver and kidney. SNP rs6855911 showed the strongest association (p = 1.84 × 10−16), along with eight others (p = 7.75 × 10−16 to 6.05 × 10−11). Individuals homozygous for the rare allele of rs6855911 (minor allele frequency = 0.26) had 0.6 mg/dl less uric acid than those homozygous for the common allele; the results were replicated in an unrelated cohort from Tuscany. Our results suggest that polymorphisms in GLUT9 could affect glucose metabolism and uric acid synthesis and/or renal reabsorption, influencing serum uric acid levels over a wide range of values.  相似文献
