Mycoplasma-like bodies in plants infected with potato witches' broom disease and the response of plants to tetracycline treatment

The virus origin of a Czechoslovak isolate of potato witches' broom disease is discounted: electron micrographs of ultrathin section of phloem tissues from plants infected with potato witches' broom disease demonstratedMycoplasma-like bodies, spherical or elongated showing binary fission and fragmentation. The minute corpuscles have a diameter of about 50–60 nm, the largest bodies of 1000 nm. The width of elongated filamentous structures is about 200 nm, most oval bodies have a diameter of 250 nm. A weak tetracycline treatment of diseased plants causes a delay of symptom development; a strong dose of tetracycline (applied by means of the wick method into the stem) inhibits symptom appearance completely. Tetracycline produces a phytotoxic effect inhibiting the growth of tomato plants and causing (at higher concentrations) necrosis and death of these plants. There is a note in the paper dealing with the term “mycoplasma”. The word mycoplasma in the sense ofEriksson (1897) or ofMereschkowsky (1910) does not correspond to the genus nameMycoplasma Nowak (1929).     

Compartmentation of glutamate metabolism in brain. Evidence for the existence of two different tricarboxylic acid cycles in brain

1. (14)C from [1-(14)C]glucose injected intraperitoneally into mice is incorporated into glutamate, aspartate and glutamine in the brain to a much greater extent than (14)C from [2-(14)C]glucose. This difference for [1-(14)C]glucose and [2-(14)C]glucose increases with time. The amount of (14)C in C-1 of glutamate increases steadily with time with both precursors. It is suggested that a large part of the glutamate and aspartate pools in brain are in close contact with intermediates of a fast-turning tricarboxylic acid cycle. 2. (14)C from [1-(14)C]acetate and [2-(14)C]acetate is incorporated to a much larger extent into glutamine than into glutamate. An examination of the time-course of (14)C incorporated into glutamine and glutamate reveals that glutamine is not formed from the glutamate pool, labelled extensively by glucose, but from a small glutamate pool. This small glutamate pool is not derived from an intermediate of a fast-turning tricarboxylic acid cycle. 3. It is proposed that two different tricarboxylic acid cycles exist in brain.

Application of fuzzy multiobjective optimization for self-sucking impellers in a bioreactor

For three types of self-sucking impellers (fourand six-pipe and disk impellers) mixing power, initial point, amount of gas leaving the impeller and mass transfer coefficient were determined experimentally. Investigations were performed for two systems: water and biomass solution.From the point of view of a minimum mixing power and maximum mass transfer coefficient the best impeller has been chosen. Seasonal changes of the photosynthetic capacity of the Antarctic macroalga Adenocystis utricularis (Bory) Skottsberg

Summary Photosynthetic oxygen evolution from Antarctic macroalgaAdenocystis utricularis, collected from littoral zone of Admiralty Bay of King George Island (South Shetland), was measured under standard laboratory conditions during a 9-month study period. During autumn and winter the photosynthetic apparatus of the alga revealed an increased capacity to use low irradiance. This coincided with increasing concentrations of chlorophyll a+c. In parallel respiration rates measured at the average monthly water temperature were lower in winter than in summer.     

Tumor necrosis factor signal transduction. Tissue-specific serine phosphorylation of a 26-kDa cytosolic protein

Binding of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) to its receptor on U937 cells results in rapid and TNF dose-dependent phosphorylation of a cytosolic protein with an apparent molecular mass of 26,000 kDa (p26) and an isoelectric point of 5.6. Half-maximal phosphorylation of p26 was achieved at concentrations of 1.8 ng/ml and was detectable within 20 s of TNF-alpha treatment. p26 is phosphorylated exclusively at serine residues. p26 phosphorylation occurs at 37 degrees C as well as at 14 degrees C, indicating that internalization of the TNF receptor is not required for serine kinase activation. Dephosphorylation of p26 starts 10 min after TNF-induced phosphorylation, suggesting a possible regulatory function of this cytosolic protein within the post-TNF receptor signaling system. p26 is also phosphorylated upon treatment with lymphotoxin. In contrast, both interferon-gamma and lipopolysaccharide fail to induce p26 phosphorylation. Whereas phosphorylated p26 was detected in the TNF-sensitive breast cancer cell line CRL1500, other TNF-responsive tumor cell lines investigated lacked enhanced phosphorylation of p26 in response to TNF, indicating that the 26-kDa phosphoprotein (pp26) may be a cell type-specific second messenger molecule involved in TNF signal transduction in some, but not all, target cells. p26 is also phosphorylated in a subclone of U937 (U937.C27) that responds to TNF-alpha with differentiation, yet is resistant to TNF-alpha-mediated growth inhibition. In contrast, p26 is not phosphorylated in another U937 derivative (U937.G3) that is resistant to both TNF-alpha-induced growth arrest and differentiation, suggesting that pp26 may play a role in the TNF signaling pathway linked to differentiation processes rather than to growth control.
