ABSTRACT

Capsule: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks Tringa nebularia migrate largely to Ireland.

Aims: To describe the migration timings and determine the non-breeding areas (staging and wintering areas) of Scottish-breeding Greenshanks.

Methods: Breeding adult Greenshanks were marked with geolocators and/or unique permutations of colour-rings in Sutherland, northern Scotland. Sightings of the colour-ringed birds and data from geolocators on recaptured birds provided information on the migrations and locations of the non-breeding areas.

Results: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks spent the winter mainly in Ireland, with the range also including Wales, southern England and western France. Departure from the breeding grounds, as determined by the geolocators, took place in June and July; the median date for the last day in the breeding area was 16 July. Arrival on the breeding grounds took place in March and April; the median date for the first day back in the breeding area was 7 April. Some birds fed at an estuary close to their territories prior to breeding. There was fidelity to wintering areas, both within and between years. Short-term staging took place during both the southward and northward migrations for some birds, and one bird used the same staging area in different autumns. Members of one pair had separate wintering areas.

Conclusions: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks have a short migration, largely to the coasts of Ireland. The migrations involved short-term staging for some birds.  相似文献

Everyone who has ever experienced a head cold is familiar with the paranasal sinuses, the bony hollows above and beside the nasal cavity that contribute, sometimes painfully, to upper respiratory tract disorders. These internal cranial structures have a wide distribution among eutherian mammals and archosaurs. 1 , 2 Sinuses have languished somewhat in the shadow of their better known and more accessible morphological cousins (dentition, postcrania), but new imaging techniques, growth studies, and explicit phylogenetic evaluation 3 are beginning to fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the evolution of these enigmatic spaces in primates and promise to yield insights into the evolution of the facial skeleton.  相似文献

We studied the action of sodium metabisulphite on mucociliary transport in a frog palate epithelial injury model, hypothesizing that it may be useful for the study of mechanisms of airway injury. Sodium metabisulphite (MB) releases SO2 on contact with water. SO2 is a pollutant in automobile fumes and may play a role in the exacerbation of airway disease symptoms. We first investigated its effect on mucociliary clearance. MB 10-1 M, increased mucociliary clearance time (MCT) by 254.5 ± 57.3% of control values, (p < 0.001, n = 7). MB 10-4 and 10-2 M did not interfere with mucus clearance time compared to control values. In MB-treated frog palates, MCT did not return to control values after one hour (control, 97.3 ± 6.3% vs. MB, 140.9 ± 46.3%, p < 0.001, n = 7). Scanning EM images of epithelial tissue were morphometrically analyzed and showed a 25 ± 12% loss of ciliated cells in MB palates compared to controls with an intact ciliary blanket. Intact cells or groups of ciliated cells were found in scanning EM micrographs of mucus from MB-treated palates. This was associated with increased matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9) activity in epithelial tissue and mucus. We suggest that the loss of ciliated cells as a result of MMP-9 activation prevented full recovery of MCT after MB 10-1 M. The mechanism of action may be on epithelial cell-cell or cell-matrix attachments leading to cell loss and a disruption of MCT. Further studies are warranted to determine whether this is an inflammatory mediated response or the result of a direct action on epithelial cells and what role this mechanism may play in the progression to chronic airway diseases with impaired mucociliary clearance.  相似文献

Bumblebee venom contains serine proteases and serine protease inhibitors. In this study, we characterized whether the bumblebee (Bombus ignitus) venom serine protease inhibitor (Bi-KTI) inhibits B. ignitus venom serine protease (Bi-VSP) or phospholipase A2 (Bi-PLA2). Bi-KTI did not inhibit Bi-VSP activity at pH 5.4 or 7.4, whereas Bi-KTI slightly inhibited Bi-VSP activity at pH 7.4 after a 30 min preincubation. The Bi-VSP activity that converts prothrombin into thrombin and fibrin into fibrin degradation products was not significantly affected by Bi-KTI. Additionally, Bi-KTI or Bi-VSP did not inhibit Bi-PLA2 activity. These findings indicate that each bee venom component appears to a play a toxic role via a unique function.  相似文献

IntroductionThe accurate interpretation of the cosyntropin (adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACTH]) stimulation test requires method- and assay-specific cutoffs of the level of cortisol. Compared with a historical cutoff (18 μg/dL) for polyclonal antibody-based immunoassays, lower thresholds were proposed for the Roche Elecsys II assay, which uses a monoclonal antibody. However, cutoffs for other commonly adopted, monoclonal antibody-based cortisol assays were not yet available. Here, we established the thresholds for the level of cortisol specific to the Abbott Architect immunoassay by comparing the measurements of the level of cortisol using 3 immunoassays.MethodsThe ACTH stimulation test was performed in patients with suspected adrenal insufficiency (n = 50). The serum cortisol level was measured using the Abbott Architect, Roche Elecsys II, and Siemens Centaur assays. The results of the Abbott assay were also compared with those of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to derive new diagnostic thresholds for the Abbott assay using the polyclonal antibody-based Siemens assay as the reference method.ResultsThe concentrations of cortisol measured using the Abbott assay were similar to those measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and the Roche Elecsys II assay but significantly lower than those measured using the Siemens assay. The optimized threshold for cortisol using the Abbott assay was 14.6 μg/dL at 60 minutes after stimulation (sensitivity, 92%; specificity, 96%) and 13.2 μg/dL at 30 minutes after stimulation (sensitivity, 100%; specificity, 89%).ConclusionWe recommend a threshold of 14.6 μg/dL for the level of cortisol at 60 minutes after ACTH stimulation for the Abbott assay. In comparison with the historical threshold of 18 μg/dL, the application of the new cutoff may significantly decrease false-positive results due to ACTH stimulation testing. The use of assay-specific cutoffs will be essential for reducing misclassification and overtreatment in patients with suspected adrenal insufficiency.  相似文献

Of two laboratory strains of Drosophila melanogaster used in this study, the +3 strain had slightly higher mean abdominal bristle number and estimated heritability of this character than the Oregon‐R. Their F1 hybrid exhibited 5 % heterosis. Fourteen generations of the two original strains and the F3 of the hybrid were selected for high and low numbers of abdominal bristles on the 4th and 5th sternites, at a selection intensity of 20%. A mass‐mated unselected control was maintained for each population. The +3 population responded considerably more to selection for low numbers of bristles than high, and the Oregon‐R population showed a similar, though less marked, tendency; the Crossbred population responded more strongly to selection for high numbers. Except for the Crossbred high selection line, all lines declined in response rate, phenotypic variance, and realised heritability. The average realised heritability of the Oregon‐R and +3 high and low selection lines over 14 selection generations fell short of their predicted base population heritabilities. The deviation from the predicted was particularly pronounced with selection for high bristle number in the +3 line.  相似文献

The extent and strength of epistasis is commonly unresolved in genetic studies, and observed epistasis is often difficult to interpret in terms of biological consequences or overall genetic architecture. We investigated the prevalence and consequences of epistasis by analyzing four body composition phenotypes—body weight, body fat percentage, femoral density, and femoral circumference—in a large F2 intercross of B6-lit/lit and C3.B6-lit/lit mice. We used Combined Analysis of Pleiotropy and Epistasis (CAPE) to examine interactions for the four phenotypes simultaneously, which revealed an extensive directed network of genetic loci interacting with each other, circulating IGF1, and sex to influence these phenotypes. The majority of epistatic interactions had small effects relative to additive effects of individual loci, and tended to stabilize phenotypes towards the mean of the population rather than extremes. Interactive effects of two alleles inherited from one parental strain commonly resulted in phenotypes closer to the population mean than the additive effects from the two loci, and often much closer to the mean than either single-locus model. Alternatively, combinations of alleles inherited from different parent strains contribute to more extreme phenotypes not observed in either parental strain. This class of phenotype-stabilizing interactions has effects that are close to additive and are thus difficult to detect except in very large intercrosses. Nevertheless, we found these interactions to be useful in generating hypotheses for functional relationships between genetic loci. Our findings suggest that while epistasis is often weak and unlikely to account for a large proportion of heritable variance, even small-effect genetic interactions can facilitate hypotheses of underlying biology in well-powered studies.  相似文献

Rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss), 40–80 mm in length,were fed the cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemi with and withoutits caudal appendage (spined or despined) to determine if theappendage makes ingestion of the zooplankter difficult for smallfish. Handling time was measured as the period of opercularand buccal activity as fish ingested prey. In 980 observationsfor 13 trout, fish spent 8 s longer or 800% more time handlingspined Bythotrephes than despined. Fish ultimately rejectedsignificantly more spined prey than despined prey. Average handlingtimes of spined prey were negatively correlated with fork lengthand smaller fish rejected spined prey more often. All fish handleddespined prey equally well. Eight of 13 fish changed their handlingefficiency over time. However, only two fish decreased handlingtime on spined prey, while two fish increased handling timeon spined prey. Four fish decreased their handling time on despineditems. Bythotrephes' caudal appendage increases the likelihoodthat it will be rejected after capture by fish and decreasesfish predation rate by increasing handling time. This is newevidence of a freshwater zooplankter having a structural defenseeffective against young fish.
