What do names tell us about our former occupations?

The paper will analyze some linguistic, primarily onomastic evidence of still existent or extinct crafts and occupations within the framework of the former social structure. Many one time crafts became extinct in the course of time, but traces of their former diffusion and importance can be reconstructed from their onomastic, primarily, anthroponomastic reflections. Similar surnames motivated by occupation can be found all across Europe. Some surname statistics in various European countries are given in the paper.     

Involuntary hospitalizations in the psychiatric hospital Jankomir before and following the alterations and amendments made to ZZODS

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders as well as the delirium caused by abstinence from alcohol and accute state of drunkenness appear at the very top of the list of factors, which are positively correlated with involuntary hospitalization of patients. This is at the same time a confirmation of the data found in literature considering psychosis an essential factor of involuntary hospitalization; the same referring to the male sex was not, however, confirmed by the results obtained in the first and second research period. Regarding the positive correlation between schizophrenia and other psychotic disturbances, dementia, delirium and other cognitive impairments including the delirium caused by abstinence from alcohol and an accute state of drunkenness on the one side and the high rate of involuntary hospitalization on the other, there is no statistically significant difference between the period preceding and the period following the alterations and amendments to the Law on the protection of patients with mental disorders.     

New concepts and new words--how do languages cope with the problem of neology?

It is a well-known fact that languages react differently when foreign words denoting new concepts have to be integrated into the native system. The procedure mostly depends on the degree of purism present in a linguistic community: some languages are rather open to foreign influences and do not demonstrate any special hostility towards new words which are easily accepted and adapted to the phonological and morphological systems of the receiving language. Languages, which have a strong puristic tradition, usually channel their borrowings into the loan translation field using internal word formation resources as a means of creating neologisms. Regardless of whether they are built of native elements or appear as loans, neologisms are necessarily the result of linguistic changes.     

Guaianolides from two subspecies of Amphoricarpos neumayeri from Montenegro

Quantitative (1)H NMR measurements revealed delta(11(13)) sesquiterpene gamma-lactones as the main constituents ( >or= 1% per weight of dried plant material) in the crude extracts of the aerial parts of Amphoricarpos neumayeri ssp. neumayeri and ssp. murbeckii from mountains Orjen and Visitor (Montenegro), respectively. Preparative silica gel chromatography afforded thirteen guai-11(13)-en-12,6alpha-olides, named amphoricarpolides (1-13), with the same relative (1alphaH,4betaH,5alphaH,7betaH) configuration of the basic skeleton. The common structural feature of lactones 2-13 was 3beta,15-dioxygenation pattern. The only exception was 1 (3-deoxyamphoricarpolide), containing a single oxygen substituent (15-OH). Eight of them exhibited an additional oxygen substituent, 9beta-OH (5 and 6), 2alpha-OH (8-12), or 2alpha-OAc (13). Compound 7 was epoxydated at 10alpha(14)-position, whereas the remaining lactones contained a 10(14) double bond.     

Rapid detection of `rare' actinomycetes in environmental samples

Natural products continue to be a useful source of new leads for the pharmaceutical industry. Actinomycetes are prolific producers of natural products and one strategy to increase the possibility of discovering novel chemical entities is to screen actinomycetes considered 'rare' in the environment and previously under-represented in natural product screening collections. We describe a method using bacteriophage as a marker to detect these actinomycetes in environmental samples. This method allows samples to be pre-screened for the presence of target actinomycetes before lengthy isolation programmes are undertaken.     

Novel ruthenium complex K2[Ru(dmgly)Cl4].2H2O is toxic to C6 astrocytoma cell line, but not to primary rat astrocytes

A novel class of ruthenium (III) complexes of formulas K[Ru(sar)2Cl2].12H2O and K2[Ru(dmgly)Cl4].2H2O, containing bidentate chelates N-methylglycine (sarcosine, sar) or N,N-dimethylglycine (dmgly) and additional chloro ligands were synthesized. The complexes have been obtained by direct reaction of ruthenium(III) chloride with corresponding bidentate ligand followed by addition of base (KOH). These new complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic absorption spectroscopy. As astrocytomas, the most common of all brain tumors, are still very difficult to treat, we examined the influence of newly synthesized ruthenium-based complexes, as well as the earlier synthesized analogue platinum(IV) complexes [Pt(dmgly)2Cl2], [Pt(sar)2Br2] and [Pt(dmgly)2Br2], on rat astrocytoma C6 cells in vitro. Among these complexes only K2[Ru(dmgly)Cl4].2H2O and [Pt(dmgly)2Br2] markedly inhibited the viability of non-confluent C6 cells. Furthermore, only complex K2[Ru(dmgly)Cl4].2H2O was able to reduce viability in confluent C6 cultures. Importantly, this complex was not toxic to primary rat astrocytes or macrophages. Having in mind that appropriate chemotherapy should be effective against tumor cells without harming normal tissues, complex K2[Ru(dmgly)Cl4].2H2O could be a promising agent for developing therapeutics against astrocytomas.     

Conformational analysis of octa- and tetrabromo tetraphenylporphyrins and their Ni(II) and Tb(III) complexes

Molecular mechanics (MM) calculations were used to analyze the puckering of metalloporphyrins as a function of metal ion size and the position of substituents on the porphyrin periphery, on a three series of octa- and tetrabromo tetraphenylporphyrins: without metal, and with Ni(II), and Tb(III) as representative small and large metal ions, respectively. Molecular energy optimization calculations were carried out using the Consistent Force Field (CFF) program, with the parameters developed previously and new parameters for bromine atom. Normal-coordinate structural decomposition (NSD) analysis was performed on the equilibrium structures obtained by MM calculations. The conformers are also stereochemically characterized, compared with available X-ray structures and with the conformers obtained in our previous MM study using chloro instead of bromo beta-pyrrole substituents.     

Expression analysis of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) metallothionein-like gene (MT3) under different stress and physiological conditions

The buckwheat metallothionein-like (MT3) gene expression was studied throughout seed and leaf development, as well as under the influence of different external stimuli. MT3 mRNAs were detected from the early stage of seed development to the end of maturation, reaching the highest level during the mid-maturation stage. High MT3 mRNA level was noticed for both green and senescent leaves. The influence of raising Cu ion concentrations on MT3 gene expression was studied only in leaves, while the effect of Zn ions was analyzed through seed development as well. It was found that Cu and Zn ions had stimulatory effects on expression in leaves. MT3 expression was significantly enhanced in the early stage of seed development in response to Zn ions, while after this stage, influence of Zn ions was not detected. After H2O2/NaCl treatment, MT3 mRNA level was decreased in green leaves, contrary to senescent leaves where expression levels remained unchanged. H2O2 treatment caused the increase of MT3 mRNA levels in the mid-maturation stage of seed development. NaCl had no effect on expression levels in seeds. According to obtained results, proposed functions in different plant organs regarding oxidative stress and metal homeostasis are discussed.     

Dosimetric analysis of the carousel setup for the exposure of rats at 1.62 GHz

The so-called carousel setup has been widely utilized for testing the hypotheses of adverse health effects on the central nervous system (CNS) due to mobile phone exposures in the frequency bands 800-900 MHz. The objectives of this article were to analyze the suitability of the setup for the upper mobile frequency range, i.e., 1.4-2 GHz, and to conduct a detailed experimental and numerical dosimetry for the setup at the IRIDIUM frequency band of 1.62 GHz. The setup consists of a plastic base on which ten rats, restrained in radially positioned tubes, are exposed to the electromagnetic field emanating from a sleeved dipole antenna at the center. Latest generation miniaturized dosimetric E field and temperature probes were used to measure the specific absorption rate (SAR) inside the brain of three rat cadavers of the Lewis strain and two rat cadavers of the Fisher 344 strain. A numerical analysis was conducted on the basis of three numerical rat phantoms with voxel sizes between 1.5 and 0.125 mm3 that are based on high resolution MRI scans of a 300 g male Wistar rat and a 370 g male Sprague-Dawley rat. The average of the assessed SAR values in the brain was 2.8 mW/g per W antenna input power for adult rats with masses between 220 and 350 g and 5.3 mW/g per W antenna input power for a juvenile rat with a mass of 95 g. The strong increase of the SAR in the brain with decreasing animal size was verified by simulations of the absorption in numerical phantoms scaled to sizes between 100 and 500 g with three different scaling methods. The study also demonstrated that current rat phantom models do not provide sufficient spatial resolution to perform absolute SAR assessment for the brain tissue. The variation of the SAR(brain)(av) due to changes in position was assessed to be in the range from +15% to -30%. A study on the dependence of the performance of the carousel setup on the frequency revealed that efficiency, defined as SAR(brain)(av) per W antenna input power, and the ratio between SAR(brain)(av) and SAR(body)(av) are optimal in the mobile communications frequency range, i.e., 0.8-3 GHz.
