Sprague-Dawley rats and several inbred strains of mice were compared with respect to the induction of 4S BNF-binding protein expression by treatment with beta-naphthoflavone (BNF), an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligand. Inbred strains of mice chosen for the study encompassed 3 allelic forms of AhR found in Mus musculus so far. As it was reported by us earlier, treating rats with BNF caused a significant induction of BNF-binding protein expression. By contrast, no BNF-binding protein was detected in mice treated with BNF in corn oil as a vehicle or with corn oil itself. 相似文献

The main goal of the present study was to show whether testicular cells of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) either hormonally manipulated (XX males) or produced by using gamma irradiation and pressure shock (YY males, "supermales") are able to aromatize androgens into estrogens compared with the control (XY males). The expression of aromatase gene at the level of the protein and its presence in testicular tissue was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis, respectively. The positive staining for aromatase was detected in testicular cells of all trout and in efferent duct cells of XY and YY males. However, the staining intensity varied among particular trout, being strong in YY males, moderate in XY males, and weak in XX trout. It was confirmed by quantitative image analysis in which the staining intensity was expressed as relative optical density (ROD) of diaminobenzidine deposits. Significant differences were found between XY and YY trout ((**)p<0.01) and XY and XX trout ((*)p<0.05). Such differences could reflect various levels of estrogens, possibly dependent on the genetic background of the trout studied. It seems likely that differential expression of the enzyme, especially that of weak or strong intensity, causes some alterations in testicular morphology of homogametic trout. Additionally, the results indicate that an imbalance in sex hormone biosynthesis may provoke the functional alterations in testes of YY males, and, in consequence, negatively affect the fertility of "supermales". 相似文献

Animals can use signals emitted by other animals as sources of information. Auditory signals are important in communication networks, as they can potentially convey information about the location and state of conspecifics and other species over long distances. Signalling is important in fission–fusion societies, in which animals from the same social group temporarily split into subgroups and frequently change roost sites. We used playbacks of social calls of the noctule Nyctalus noctula produced in roosts, to show how bats might maintain group cohesion and to test the hypothesis that noctules can locate conspecifics when returning from foraging trips by eavesdropping on or communicating with roosting individuals. Noctules responded strongly to broadcasted social calls. Their reactions included inspections and landing on a loudspeaker broadcasting social calls and occasional social vocalisation. Responses by other bat species to the noctule social calls were negligible. The high amplitude, low‐frequency vocalisations emitted by noctules in roosts can propagate over long distances and allow group members to announce their position. Bats can extract information about the location of roosts containing conspecifics by eavesdropping or by communication. Social calls may thus be sufficient to locate conspecifics in roosts and maintain spatial associations of groups in mammals. 相似文献

In recent years the the set of diagnostic tools in colorectal cancers has been extended by the assessment of the KRAS gene status. Currently it is a necessary step in order to qualify patients for the targeted therapy. The results of the analysis of several studies revealed a high rate of compliance of the KRAS gene mutational status in primary and metastatic tumors. In this paper we present a rare case of incompatibility of the KRAS mutations in the primary tumor located in the colon and metastatic changes in the liver. 相似文献

Interleukin 12 (IL-12) seemed to represent the ideal candidate for tumor immunotherapy, due to its ability to activate both innate (NK cells) and adaptive (cytotoxic T lymphocytes) immunities. However, despite encouraging results in animal models, very modest antitumor effects of IL-12 in early clinical trials, often accompanied by unacceptable levels of adverse events, markedly dampened hopes of the successful use of this cytokine in cancer patients. Recently, several clinical studies have been initiated in which IL-12 is applied as an adjuvant in cancer vaccines, in gene therapy including locoregional injections of IL-12 plasmid and in the form of tumor-targeting immunocytokines (IL-12 fused to monoclonal antibodies). The near future will show whether this renewed interest in the use of IL-12 in oncology will result in meaningful therapeutic effects in a select group of cancer patients. 相似文献

A continuous record of sedimentation in spring-fed fens makes them suitable for detailed palaeoenvironmental studies. A newly investigated cupola spring-fed fen (Paw?ów site), located in the Lublin chalkland, eastern Poland, was the object of our study. This special karst region is characterised by the occurrence of Upper Cretaceous carbonate rocks in the substratum. Sedimentological observations indicated strong variability of biogenic-carbonate series in the deposits (=peat-tufa rhythmite), reflects changes of accumulation conditions (oxidising versus reducing), resulting from alternate occurrence of warmer and cooler periods. Difficulties in pollen analysis due to oxidising conditions necessitate a multidisciplinary approach for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. We used a multidisciplinary approach (sedimentological, palaeobotanical, geochemical analyses and radiocarbon dating) to determine the main evolutionary stages of this unique fen ecosystem and to discuss the role of local or/and regional factors in its development. Pollen and plant macrofossil analyses, supported by radiocarbon dating, proved that the bottom part of the cores represents the Late Glacial–Early Holocene stages of the fen development. A comparative analysis of palaeoenvironmental data showed close resemblance between the Paw?ów fen and the earlier studied fens in eastern Poland and Central-Eastern Europe, and the connection between their development and supraregional hydrological-climatic factors. The results indicated also the influence of the morphological position of such a type of ecosystem on the development of a continuous deposit succession. The occurrence of a river valley in close proximity of the Paw?ów site resulted in the lack of tufa deposits from the Atlantic period, because of an erosional phase in the river valley. 相似文献

Hybridisation can lead to the formation of new evolutionary lineages and some described insect species may in fact be first-generation hybrids of their parental species. Anoplistes forticornis and A. galusoi are two closely related cerambycid taxa endemic to Central Asia that exhibit a peculiar geographical distribution. Although the common diagnostic elytral pattern makes these beetles superficially easily distinguishable, there are marked resemblances in their morphology. By applying an integrative taxonomy approach, we verify the taxonomic status of A. forticornis and A. galusoi and test the possibility of hybridisation. The results of our comprehensive morphological examination and molecular analyses targeting mitochondrial (COI, 16S rRNA) and nuclear (arginine kinase, CAD, 28S rRNA) genes support the specific status of these taxa. In mtDNA, the putative hybrid specimen is more closely related to A. forticornis, which indicates that a female of this species bred with a male of A. galusoi. The supposed ecotypic variability (manifested in elytral pattern) is apparently not related to the topography or spatial structure of habitat. The phylogenetic hypothesis supports a peripatric scenario in which populations of the common ancestor had been separated for a significant period of time, first by the mountain ranges of Dzungarian Alatau (~11–10 Ma) and ultimately by the Ili River. The diverged taxa came into recent secondary contact following these isolation events. The methodology presented herein can be widely applied to identify first-generation hybridisation in Coleoptera. 相似文献
