The death rate of Salmonella enteritidis was always faster in mayonnaise made with extra virgin olive oil than in that prepared from blended olive or sunflower oils. The acidity and the phenolic profiles of these oils differed significantly. The most acidic oils (0·5% oleic acid), the extra virgin oils, also had the most complex phenolic profiles. The acidity of sunflower and blended olive oil was 0·2% and 0·4% respectively.  相似文献

To facilitate analysis of mechanisms involved in cold water near-drowning, maximum breath-hold duration (BHD) and diving bradycardia were measured in 160 humans who were submerged in water temperatures from 0 to 35 degrees C at 5 degrees C intervals. For sudden submersion BHD was dependent on water temperature (Tw) according to the equation BHD = 15.01 + 0.92Tw. In cold water (0-15 degrees C), BHD was greatly reduced, being 25-50% of the presubmersion duration. BHD after brief habituation to water temperature and mild, voluntary hyperventilation was more than double that of sudden submersion and was also dependent on water temperature according to the equation BHD = 38.90 + 1.70Tw. Minimum heart rate during both types of submersions (diving bradycardia) was independent of water temperature. The results are pertinent to accidental submersion in cold water and show that decreased breath-holding capacity caused by peripheral cold stimulation reduces the effectiveness of the dive response and facilitates drowning. These findings do not support the postulate that the dive response has an important role in the enhanced resuscitatibility associated with cold water near-drowning, thereby shifting emphasis to hypothermia as the mechanism for this phenomenon.  相似文献

The potential of five different groups of materials--carbons, glass and ceramics, polymers, hydrogels and collagen--as biomaterials in artificial implant applications is examined. In addition to the physical and/or structural properties of these materials, the blood and tissue responses to implants made of these biomaterials for various applications are presented. The acetyltransferase chains of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex of Escherichia coli contain conformationally mobile (alanine + proline)-rich segments that link the lipoyl domains to each other and to the subunit-binding and catalytic domain, and facilitate the intramolecular coupling of active sites in the complex. A deletion of 12 of the 32 residues of the (Ala + Pro)-rich segment of an acetyltransferase containing only one lipoyl domain was made by deleting the corresponding segment of the aceF gene. A pyruvate dehydrogenase complex was still produced and the catalytic activity of the restructured complex, including active-site coupling, was not detectably impaired.  相似文献

Abstract. We investigated the phylogeny and taxonomy of the Prenolepis genus‐group, a clade of ants we define within the subfamily Formicinae comprising the genera Euprenolepis, Nylanderia, gen. rev. , Paraparatrechina, gen. rev. & stat. nov. , Paratrechina, Prenolepis and Pseudolasius. We inferred a phylogeny of the Prenolepis genus‐group using DNA sequence data from five genes (CAD, EF1αF1, EF1αF2, wingless and COI) sampled from 50 taxa. Based on the results of this phylogeny the taxonomy of the Prenolepis genus‐group was re‐examined. Paratrechina (broad sense) species segregated into three distinct, robust clades. Paratrechina longicornis represents a distinct lineage, a result consistent with morphological evidence; because this is the type species for the genus, Paratrechina is redefined as a monotypic genus. Two formerly synonymized subgenera, Nylanderia and Paraparatrechina, are raised to generic status in order to provide names for the other two clades. The majority of taxa formerly placed in Paratrechina, 133 species and subspecies, are transferred to Nylanderia, and 28 species and subspecies are transferred to Paraparatrechina. In addition, two species are transferred from Pseudolasius to Paraparatrechina and one species of Pseudolasius is transferred to Nylanderia. A morphological diagnosis for the worker caste of all six genera is provided, with a discussion of the morphological characters used to define each genus. Two genera, Prenolepis and Pseudolasius, were not recovered as monophyletic by the molecular data, and the implications of this result are discussed. A worker‐based key to the genera of the Prenolepis genus‐group is provided.  相似文献

Amyloid fibril accumulation is a pathological hallmark of several devastating disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, prion diseases, type II diabetes, and others. Although the molecular factors responsible for amyloid pathologies have not been deciphered, interactions of misfolded proteins with cell membranes appear to play important roles in these disorders. Despite increasing evidence for the involvement of membranes in amyloid-mediated cytotoxicity, the pursuit for therapeutic strategies has focused on preventing self-assembly of the proteins comprising the amyloid plaques. Here we present an investigation of the impact of fibrillation modulators upon membrane interactions of β2-microglobulin (β2m) fibrils. The experiments reveal that polyphenols (epigallocatechin gallate, bromophenol blue, and resveratrol) and glycosaminoglycans (heparin and heparin disaccharide) differentially affect membrane interactions of β2m fibrils measured by dye-release experiments, fluorescence anisotropy of labeled lipid, and confocal and cryo-electron microscopies. Interestingly, whereas epigallocatechin gallate and heparin prevent membrane damage as judged by these assays, the other compounds tested had little, or no, effect. The results suggest a new dimension to the biological impact of fibrillation modulators that involves interference with membrane interactions of amyloid species, adding to contemporary strategies for combating amyloid diseases that focus on disruption or remodeling of amyloid aggregates.  相似文献

We examine the phylogenetic relationships of Figitidae and discuss host use within this group in light of our own and previously published divergence time data. Our results suggest Figitidae, as currently defined, is not monophyletic. Furthermore, Mikeiinae and Pycnostigminae are sister‐groups, nested adjacent to Thrasorinae, Plectocynipinae and Euceroptrinae. The recovery of Pycnostigminae as sister‐group to Mikeiinae suggests two major patterns of evolution: (i) early Figitidae lineages demonstrate a Gondawanan origin (Plectocynipinae: Neotropical; Mikeiinae and Thrasorinae: Australia; Pycnostigminae: Africa); and (ii) based on host records for Mikeiinae, Thrasorinae and Plectocynipinae, Pycnostigminae are predicted to be parasitic on gall‐inducing Hymenoptera. The phylogenetic position of Parnips (Parnipinae) was unstable, and various analyses were conducted to determine the impact of this uncertainty on both the recovery of other clades and inferred divergence times; when Parnips was excluded from the total evidence analysis, Cynipidae was found to be sister‐group to [Euceroptrinae + (Plectocynipinae (Thrasorinae + (Mikeiinae + Pycnostigminae)))], with low support. Divergence dating analyses using BEAST indicate the stem‐group node of Figitidae to be c. 126 Ma; the dipteran parasitoids (Eucoilinae and Figitinae), were estimated to have a median age of 80 and 88 Ma, respectively; the neuropteran parasitoids (Anacharitinae), were estimated to have a median age of 97 Ma; sternorrhynchan hyperparasitoids (Charipinae), were estimated to have a median age of 110 Ma; the Hymenoptera‐parasitic subfamilies (Euceroptinae, Plectocynipinae, Trasorinae, Mikeiinae, Pycnostigminae, and Parnipinae), ranged in median ages from 48 to 108 Ma. Rapid radiation of Eucoilinae subclades appears chronologically synchronized with the origin of their hosts, Schizophora (Diptera). Overall, the exclusion of Parnips from the BEAST analysis did not result in significant changes to divergence estimates. Finally, though sparsely represented in the analysis, our data suggest Cynipidae have a median age of 54 Ma, which is somewhat older than the age of Quercus spp (30–50 Ma), their most common host.  相似文献
