The morphological, physiological, and behavioural traits of organisms are often used as surrogates for actual ecological functions. However, differences in these traits do not necessarily lead to functional differences and/or can be context–dependent. Therefore, it is necessary to explicitly test whether the surrogates have general ecological relevance. To investigate the relationship between the hunting strategies of predators (i.e., how, where, and when they hunt) and their function, we used euryphagous spiders as a model group. We used published data on the diet composition of 76 spider species based on natural prey and laboratory prey acceptance experiments. We computed differences in the position and width of trophic niches among pairs of sympatrically occurring species. Pairs were made at different classification levels, ranked according to the dissimilarity in their hunting strategies: congeners, confamiliars (as phylogenetic proxies for similarity in hunting strategy), species from the same main class of hunting strategy, from the same supra-class, and from different supra-classes. As for niche position computed from the natural prey analyses, species from the same class differed less than species from different classes. A similar pattern was obtained from the laboratory studies, but the congeners differed less than the species from the same classes. Niche widths were most similar among congeners and dissimilar among species from different supra-classes. Functional differences among euryphagous spiders increased continuously with increasing difference in their hunting strategy. The relative frequency of hunting strategies within spider assemblages can, therefore, influence the food webs through hunting strategy-specific predator–prey interactions. 相似文献

Hyalomma aegyptium ticks were collected from tortoises, Testudo graeca, at localities in northern Africa, the Balkans, and the Near and Middle East. The intensity of infestation ranged from 1-37 ticks per tortoise. The sex ratio of feeding ticks was male-biased in all tested populations. Larger tortoises carried more ticks than did the smaller tortoises. The juveniles were either not infested, or carried only a poor tick load. Hyalomma aegyptium was absent in the western Souss Valley and Ourika Valley in Morocco, the Cyrenaica Peninsula in Libya, Jordan, and the Antilebanon Mountains in Syria. Hemolivia mauritanica, a heteroxenous apicomplexan cycling between T. graeca and H. aegyptium, was confirmed in Algeria, Romania, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran. Its prevalence ranged from 84% in Romania (n = 45), 82% in eastern Turkey (n = 28), and 82% in the area of northwestern Syria with adjacent Turkish borderland (n = 90), to 38% in Lebanon (n = 8) and in only 1 of 16 sampled tortoises in Algeria. The intensity of parasitemia in the studied areas ranged from 0.01% up to 28.17%. The percentage of Hemolivia-infected erythrocytes was significantly higher in adults. All tortoises from Hyalomma-free areas were Hemolivia-negative. Remarkably, all 29 T. graeca from Jabal Duruz (southwestern Syria) and 36 T. graeca from the area north of Middle Atlas (Morocco) were Hemolivia-negative, despite the fact that ticks parasitized all adult tortoises in these localities. Identical host preferences of H. aegyptium and H. mauritanica suggest the occurrence of co-evolution within the Testudo-Hyalomma-Hemolivia host-parasite complex. 相似文献

Ozone (O3) is supposed to represent a significant risk for the health of forest ecosystems in Central Europe. So far, however, its impact on stands growing under natural conditions has not been clearly proved. A new project of the National Agency for the Research in Agriculture is focused on the O3 effect on selected parameters of forest health. This paper presents the results of the first year of monitoring, 2005. In 2005, high O3 concentrations were measured, mainly in the spring. In the summer, due to wet and cold weather, the O3 load was comparatively low. In the plots investigated, the concentrations of O3 were higher with the altitude. The amount of epicuticular waxes on 1-year-old Norway spruce needles was the only factor showing significant correlation to O3 concentration. Defoliation of the stands depended only on the stand age. The amount of malondialdehyde (MDA), an oxidative stress marker, was related to the altitude, and only for European beech. The results are preliminary, as the summer O3 development was not typical in 2005, and the results may change over the next monitoring periods. 相似文献

A set of modified 2′-deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) bearing a linear or branched alkane, indole or phenyl group linked through ethynyl or alkyl spacer were synthesized and used as substrates for polymerase synthesis of hypermodified DNA by primer extension (PEX). Using the alkyl-linked dNTPs, the polymerase synthesized up to 22-mer fully modified oligonucleotide (ON), whereas using the ethynyl-linked dNTPs, the enzyme was able to synthesize even long sequences of >100 modified nucleotides in a row. In PCR, the combinations of all four modified dNTPs showed only linear amplification. Asymmetric PCR or PEX with separation or digestion of the template strand can be used for synthesis of hypermodified single-stranded ONs, which are monodispersed polymers displaying four different substituents on DNA backbone in sequence-specific manner. The fully modified ONs hybridized with complementary strands and modified DNA duplexes were found to exist in B-type conformation (B- or C-DNA) according to CD spectral analysis. The modified DNA can be replicated with high fidelity to natural DNA through PCR and sequenced. Therefore, this approach has a promising potential in generation and selection of hypermodified aptamers and other functional polymers. 相似文献

Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that plays an important role in small intestine ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury.
The aim of this study was to determine the total proportion of apoptotic cell death (apoptotic index) following injury induced
by ischemia and during various subsequent reperfusion periods, total histopathological status and the intestine regeneration
dynamics after the IR injury. Experimental animals, Wistar rats (n = 45) were divided into three experimental and one control groups. In the experimental groups 1 h ischemia was followed by
1, 4 and 24 h reperfusion. Intestinal ischemia was induced by superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion. Segments of jejunum
were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and studied immunohistochemically using M30 CytoDEATH and in situ TUNEL methods for apoptosis detection. Our experimental data showed that: (i) apoptosis is an important form of cell death
in the small intestine after IR injury induced by SMA occlusion; (ii) maximum levels of histopathological damage and apoptotic
index of mucosa occurred after 1 h ischemia and 1 h of reperfusion; and (iii) mucosa possesses great regeneration ability.
The lowest levels of histopathological damage and apoptotic index were observed in the group with 1 h ischemia and 24 h reperfusion

The occurrence of phosphorylated proteins in ribosomes of Streptomyces coelicolor was investigated. Little is known about which biological functions these posttranslational modifications might fulfil. A protein kinase associated with ribosomes phosphorylated six ribosomal proteins of the small subunit (S3, S4, S12, S13, S14 and S18) and seven ribosomal proteins of the large subunit (L2, L3, L7/L12, L16, L17, L23 and L27). The ribosomal proteins were phosphorylated mainly on the Ser/Thr residues. Phosphorylation of the ribosomal proteins influences ribosomal subunits association. Ribosomes with phosphorylated proteins were used to examine poly (U) translation activity. Phosphorylation induced about 50% decrease in polyphenylalanine synthesis. After preincubation of ribosomes with alkaline phosphatase the activity of ribosomes was greatly restored. Small differences were observed between phosphorylated and unphosphorylated ribosomes in the kinetic parameters of the binding of Phe-tRNA to the A-site of poly (U) programmed ribosomes, suggesting that the initial binding of Phe-tRNA is not significantly affected by phosphorylation. On contrary, the rate of peptidyl transferase was about two-fold lower than that in unphosphorylated ribosomes. Two thermophilic strains belonging to Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Meiothermus ruber, which naturally do not synthesize ω-alicyclic fatty acids (ω-FAs) were cultivated with cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl
and cyclohexyl carboxylic acids. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of fatty acid methyl and picolinyl esters showed
that both strains are able to synthesize ω-FAs when cultivated with the appropriate precursor. The incorporation of cyclic
acids influenced the whole FA composition as well as membrane fluidity. Membrane fluidity of intact cells was studied by measuring
the fluorescence polarisation of the probe l,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene incorporated into membrane lipid bilayers. Cytoplasmic
membrane became more fluid with increasing content of ω-FAs. This is caused by considerable changes in lipid packing within
the membrane induced by the presence of ω-FAs not found in the natural environment of Geobacillus and Meiothermus strains. 相似文献
