Extreme temperature events are a great challenge for most ectotherms, particularly for the immature stages of parasitoids, as they do not possess the ability to behaviourally thermoregulate. In this study, we measured the effect of an acute heat shock, combined with desiccation stress (34 °C and 35% r.h. during 10 h) during the mummy stage on several fitness‐related traits of emerging adults of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae). Our results showed that the emergence rate was strongly affected by the heat shock (63 ± 2.3 vs. 96.1 ± 0.7% for stress vs. control conditions, respectively), and the resulting population was male biased. Heat stress reduced the lifespan of emerged parasitoids but had no effect on fat reserves and female size. Egg load at emergence and parasitism rate were also reduced by heat treatment. The antennal symmetry was disturbed by the heat treatment, and stressed individuals had reduced mating success compared to control parasitoids. Specifically, time before wing fanning, a typical male courtship behaviour, was significantly longer in parasitoid pairs involving females that had emerged from heat‐treated mummies. Additionally, olfactometry tests on experimental females indicated that their response to host odour was similar to that of control individuals, but they required a longer time for perception. These results highlight that exposure to high temperatures during the mummy stage has cumulative detrimental effects that may strongly impact parasitoid populations under natural conditions and hinder the success of biological control programs.  相似文献

Stones in arid environments are inhabited by actinobacteria of the family Geodermatophilaceae like the genera Blastococcus and Modestobacter frequently isolated from altered calcarenites. Their habitat requires adaptation to light-induced and other stresses that generate reactive oxygen species. Here, we show that representative members of the species Blastococcus saxobsidens, Geodermatophilus obscurus, and Modestobacter multiseptatus are differentially adapted to stresses associated with arid environments. Whereas B.?saxobsidens was found to be sensitive to gamma radiation (D(10) =?900 Gy; 10% survival at 900 Gy), M.?multiseptatus was moderately (D(10) =?6000 Gy) and G.?obscurus was highly tolerant (D(10) =?9000 Gy). A difference in resistance to high-frequency (λ value?=?254?nm) UV was shown by B.?saxobsidens, M.?multiseptatus, and G.?obscurus, being sensitive, tolerant, and highly tolerant (D(10) of 6, 900, and >?3500?kJ?m(-2) , respectively). Tolerance to desiccation, mitomycin C and hydrogen peroxide correlated with the ionizing radiation and UV resistance profiles of the three species and were correlated with the pigments synthesized. Resistance to heavy metals/metalloids did not follow the same pattern, with resistance to Ag(2+) and Pb(2+) being similar for B.?saxobsidens, M.?multiseptatus, and G.?obscurus, whereas resistance to AsO4 3-, Cr(2+) , or Cu(2+) was greater for B.?saxobsidens than for the other two species. The stress resistance profiles of M.?multiseptatus and B.?saxobsidens were reflected in different calcarenite colonization patterns. While M.?multiseptatus was predominantly isolated from the first two millimeters of stone surface, B.?saxobsidens was predominantly isolated from the deeper part of the stone where it is better protected from sun irradiation, suggesting that the response to light- and desiccation-induced oxidative stress is an important driver for niche colonization in the stone biotope.  相似文献

The suppressive effects of two different types of date palm composts and some of their indigenous microorganisms were evaluated in vitro and on potato plants inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani. Fungi isolated from composts screened against R. solani by dual cultural assays on PDA showed a significant inhibition of pathogen mycelium growth as compared with untreated control. The type of hyphal interactions between R. solani and each tested antagonist was observed by light microscopy. Microscopic observations carried out at the confrontation zone of both agents showed different mechanisms of actions: mycelia lyses, mycoparasitism and/or formation of mycelia cords via anatomosis between mycelia filaments. Unsterilized and sterilized compost extracts were tested for efficacy against R. solani using agar‐well diffusion method or by pouring the extracts on PDA. Two sterilization methods were used: a filtration through a microfilter of 0.22 microns or autoclaving. Results showed that compost extract lost its activity after heating or filtration, confirming that chemical factors in compost had no direct inhibiting effect on the pathogen. The suppressiveness of composts was mainly due to their biotic component. Series of greenhouse trials showed that black scurf and stem canker incidence and severity were significantly reduced in peat–sand amended with compost compared with the untreated control. However, the potential suppressive effect of cattle manure and date palm compost (CMC) was higher than sheep manure and date palm compost (SMC). On potato seed tubers pre‐inoculated with the selected fungal isolates from compost, there was variability in the reduction of disease severity among treatments. Plant growth was unaffected by the application of fungal antagonists or by CMC amendment; however, an increase in the total yield was observed by the SMC potting mix compared with untreated control.  相似文献
