The liver has an extraordinary regenerative capacity rapidly triggered upon injury or resection. This response is intrinsically adjusted in its initiation and termination, a property termed the “hepatostat”. Several molecules have been involved in liver regeneration, and among them bile acids may play a central role. Intrahepatic levels of bile acids rapidly increase after resection. Through the activation of farnesoid X receptor (FXR), bile acids regulate their hepatic metabolism and also promote hepatocellular proliferation. FXR is also expressed in enterocytes, where bile acids stimulate the expression of fibroblast growth factor 15/19 (FGF15/19), which is released to the portal blood. Through the activation of FGFR4 on hepatocytes FGF15/19 regulates bile acids synthesis and finely tunes liver regeneration as part of the “hepatostat”. Here we review the experimental evidences supporting the relevance of the FXR-FGF15/19-FGFR4 axis in liver regeneration and discuss potential therapeutic applications of FGF15/19 in the prevention of liver failure. We investigated alloparental interactions and conditions which could facilitate or prevent the expression of alloparental
behaviours in Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), a long-lived seabird which nests in high-density colonies around Antarctica. Observation sessions were carried out during
the crèche stage on 48 identified pairs and 50 identified chicks in a 217-nest subcolony. As the season progressed, young
were fed less often by their own parents because these were increasingly absent from the breeding site and less responsive
to their offspring’s solicitations. As a consequence, young and particularly those with a low body mass, coming from a two-chick
brood, opted for gradually soliciting more from other adults to obtain food, preferentially those nesting in their direct
vicinity. Unsuccessful breeders represented a low and constant part of the adult population and were not specifically solicited
by unrelated young. Despite the increasing chick demand, only 4.1% (3 out of 73) of alloparental solicitations resulted in
feeding, which is negligible compared to parental feeding. To investigate factors that could trigger the appearance of alloparental
care, we carried out comparisons with king (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) which represent the closest species for which data on alloparental behaviour were available. Our results show different
trends to those observed in these species and three factors may explain the low occurrence of alloparental behaviour in Adélie
penguins: (1) the low and constant proportion of unsuccessful breeders, (2) the absence of chick selectivity towards unsuccessful

We have determined the nucleotide sequence of gene linA in plasmid pIP855, which confers resistance to lincomycin by inactivating it in Staphylococcus haemolyticus. The gene was defined by start and stop codons and an open reading frame of 483 bp corresponding to a product with an Mr of 19020. The apparent size of the resistance-conferring protein was 21 kDa, when a minicell extract was electrophoresed in the sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. Full expression of linA was obtained both in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. 相似文献

In most countries, Chagas disease transmission control remains based on domestic insecticide application. We thus evaluated the efficacy of intra-domicile cyfluthrin spraying for the control of Triatoma dimidiata, the only Chagas disease vector in the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico, and monitored potential re-infestation every 15 days for up to 9 months. We found that there was a re-infestation of houses by adult bugs starting 4 months after insecticide application, possibly from sylvatic/peridomicile areas. This points out the need to take into account the potential dispersal of sylvatic/peridomestic adult bugs into the domiciles as well as continuity action for an effective vector control. 相似文献

Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii is known to prevent mutations caused by various agents such as N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, 9-aminoacridine, 4-nitro-quinoline-1-oxide and by UV radiation in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It was also shown to prevent or repair damage caused by H(2)O(2) or UV radiation in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, a characteristic previously designated as reactivative effect. In order to characterise this effect at the molecular level, we have purified the active component from a P. freudenreichii cell-free extract using a combination of ammonium sulfate precipitation, anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. The isolated 35 kDa protein was then identified using both N-terminal and internal peptide sequencing as a cysteine synthase. The latter was localised in the P. freudenreichii proteomic map. It is constitutively expressed but also clearly induced during adaptation to detergent and heat, but not acid, stresses. The biological meaning of cysteine synthase in the context of adaptation to oxidative and non-oxidative stresses is discussed. 相似文献

Mitotic spindle formation in animal cells involves microtubule nucleation from two centrosomes that are positioned at opposite sides of the nucleus. Microtubules are captured by the kinetochores and stabilized. In addition, microtubules can be nucleated independently of the centrosome and stabilized by a gradient of Ran—GTP, surrounding the mitotic chromatin. Complex regulation ensures the formation of a bipolar apparatus, involving motor proteins and controlled polymerization and depolymerization of microtubule ends. The bipolar apparatus is, in turn, responsible for faithful chromosome segregation. During recent years, a variety of experiments has indicated that defects in specific motor proteins, centrosome proteins, kinases and other proteins can induce the assembly of aberrant spindles with a monopolar morphology or with poorly separated poles. Induction of monopolar spindles may be a useful strategy for cancer therapy, since ensuing aberrant mitotic exit will usually lead to cell death. In this review, we will discuss the various underlying molecular mechanisms that may be responsible for monopolar spindle formation. 相似文献
