Field observations on the behaviour of adult Galapagos giant tortoises ( Geochehne elephantopus ) on the islands of Santa Cruz (Indefatigable) and Pinzon (Duncan) were made by the 1972 Expedition, and on Santa Cruz by the 1973 Expedition. The animals (in all 14 on Santa Cruz and three on Pinzon) were observed continuously throughout the day for periods of 3–14 days so that their main non-reproductive activities (feeding and walking) could be quantitatively recorded. The period of potential activity was between about 08.00 hrs and 16.00–18.00 hrs, but the pattern of behaviour was extremely variable, both in a given individual and between one individual and another; it seemed little influenced by the relatively slight fluctuations of temperature and climate which occurred during the period of study (July-September) on Santa Cruz. The tortoises on Pinzon, a much more arid island, were less active, and one showed a strongly bimodal activity pattern with a resting period during the middle of the day. The animals studied in 1972 showed a strong disposition to return after several days to the same sleeping place, but this homing tendency was not observed in 1973. This discrepancy can perhaps be attributed to the fact that the two expeditions worked in different areas under different weather conditions. Observations on the plants eaten, on the association between tortoises and certain birds, and on some other aspects of tortoise behaviour such as walking speed and responses to sounds are also described.  相似文献

Mitochondria isolated from lettuce seeds and seedlings are capableof hydrolyzing ATP. On basis of pH optima, there are at leasttwo and probably three enzymes possessing ATPase activity. Oneof them is inhibited by EDTA and all of them are inhibited byNaF. The ATP ase activity of the mitochondria is very slight in imbibedseeds but increases considerably with seedling growth. Othercomponents of the cell also contain ATP hydrolyzing enzymes;however, most of these phosphatases in the seedling seem tobe soluble enzymes. (Received December 12, 1961; )  相似文献

Experiments are described to compare the toxicity of natural pyrethrins and allethrin, the completely synthetic homologue of cinerin I, and to show the effect of the two synergists, piperonyl butoxide and iaobutyl undecyleneamide (IN 930) on both these active ingredients, using a measured-drop technique with Mucca domestiur L. the housefly, and a residual-film technique with Cimex lectularius L. the bed bug. In the conditions of the experiment, pyrethrins were shown to be twice as toxic as allethrin to flies, and 5.5 times as toxic as allethrin to bugs. The two synergists were tested at several ratios to the two insecticides, ranging from 1 : 1 to 20 : 1. The results were plotted as series of log. concentration/probit regression linea. These were parallel for the bug tests; but in the fly tests, the slope of the line increased with a rise in the proportion of Synergist to insecticide. The estimated median lethal concentrations indicated, in all cases, that the toxicity increased with a rise in the ratio of synergist to insecticide, at least up to 20 : 1. However, the enhancement of toxicity was greatest for the smaller ratios and fell off as the ratio increased. Piperonyl butoxide was the more powerful synergist, increasing the potency of pyrethrins 5 times and allethrin 4 times to flies, and pyrethrins twice and allethrin 3 times to bugs, whereas IN 930 did not increase the potency of either ingredient more than twice to either test insect.
The addition of piperonyl butoxide to residual films of pyrethrins greatly prolonged their effectiveness; but an experiment designed to investigate the effect of the synergist on the stability of this insecticide showed that this action, if it exists, must be slight.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The resistance to drying under atmospheric conditions of Escherichia coli cells suspended in water, broth and horse serum was investigated. Cells from cultures in the early (logarithmic) growth phase were more susceptible than older cells, and this, together with the fact that the strain of E. coli used was very sensitive to drying, even in a protective menstruum such as horse serum, made it unlikely that the clearer chromatin staining obtained with cells from young than from old cultures could be attributed to the occurrence of less disruption of the former during drying of the films.  相似文献

The possible effects of synthetic auxins and anti-auxins onthe metabolism of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in plant tissueshave not been properly studied in the past. For this reasonseedlings of peas, beans, and sunflower have been treated withthe synthetic auxin, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)and two supposed anti-auxins, 2,3,5-tri-iodobenzoic acid (TIBA)and maleic hydrazide (MH), at non-toxic levels sufficient tocause well-marked growth responses. Estimates of the contentof alcohol-extractable growth-substances have subsequently beendetermined, after separation by paper partition chromatography.Although at least six active natural compounds have been indicatedin such extracts, only the effects of treatment on IAA levelshave been followed in detail. 2,4-D treatment of both leaves and roots has no detectable effecton the levels of free endogenous IAA, and it is thereby concludedthat 2,4-D is an auxin in its own right and does not act ongrowth via a disturbance of IAA metabolism. There are indicationsthat considerable amounts of the absorbed 2,4-D are convertedin plant tissues to a neutral detoxication product which iseasily decomposed to liberate 2,4-D during chromatographic analysis. TIBA treatment of pea roots dramatically reduces their freeendogenous IAA content, in some cases to 1/10,000 the normallevel. The implications of these findings are discussed in termsof the physiological and morphological responses of plants toTIBA treatment. There are indications that MH may put up slightly the levelof free endogenous auxin in pea roots but further confirmatorywork is required.  相似文献

The Physiological Mechanisms of Acclimatization in Tropical Reef Corals   总被引:12,自引:1,他引:11  
SYNOPSIS. The ability of scleractinian corals to survive changesthat are predicted in the global environment over the next centurywill lie in their physiological mechanisms of acclimatization.Corals display rapid modifications in behavior, morphology andphysiology enabling them to photoacclimate to changing lightconditions, a scenario that demonstrates considerable biologicalflexibility. Here we argue that the acclimatization mechanismsin corals are fundamentally similar to those exhibited by otherinvertebrate taxa. We discuss protein metabolism as a mechanismunderlying acclimatization responses in reef corals, and explorethe relationship between protein turnover, metabolic rate, growthrate, and acclimatization capacity. Our preliminary analysessuggest that corals with low growth rates (µCa/mgN/h)and high metabolic rates (µO2/cm2/hr), such as the massivespecies, acclimatize more effectively than those with high growthrates and low metabolic rates, a feature that is characteristicof branching species. We conclude that studies of protein turnover,combined with temporally relevant investigations into the dynamicaspects of coral dinoflagellate symbioses will provide considerableinsight into why corals exhibit such a high level of variationin response to the same environmental challenge. Furthermore,a more detailed understanding of acclimatization mechanismsis essential if we are to predict how a coral assemblage willrespond to present and future environmental challenges.  相似文献

1. Shallow lakes are often cited as classic examples of systems that exhibit trophic cascades but, whilst they provide good model systems with which to test general ecological theory and to assess long‐term community change, their food web linkages have rarely been resolved, so changes associated with the structure and dynamics of the ecological network as a whole are still poorly understood. 2. We sought to redress this, and to demonstrate the potential benefits of integrating palaeolimnological and contemporary data, by constructing highly resolved food webs and stable isotope derived measures of trophic interactions and niche space, for the extant communities of two shallow U.K. lakes from different positions along a gradient of eutrophication. The contemporary surface sediment cladoceran and submerged macrophyte assemblages in the less enriched site, Selbrigg Pond, matched the palaeolimnological assemblages of the more enriched site, Felbrigg Hall Lake, in its more pristine state during the 1920s. Thus, Selbrigg was a temporal analogue for Felbrigg, from which the consequences of long‐term eutrophication on food web structure could be inferred. These data represent the first steps towards reconstructing not only past assemblages (i.e. nodes within a food web), but also past interactions (i.e. links within a food web): a significant departure from much of the previous research in palaeolimnology. 3. The more eutrophic food web had far fewer nodes and links, and thus a less reticulate network, than was the case for the more pristine system. In isotopic terms, there was vertical compression in δ15N range (NR) and subsequent increased overlap in isotopic niche space, indicating increased trophic redundancy within Felbrigg. This structural change, which was associated with a greater channelling of energy through a smaller number of nodes as alternative feeding pathways disappear, could lead to reduced dynamic stability, pushing the network towards further simplification. These changes reflected a general shift from a benthic‐dominated towards a more pelagic system, as the plant‐associated subweb eroded. 4. Although these data are among the first of their kind, the palaeo‐analogue approach used here demonstrates the huge potential for applying food web theory to understand how and why these ecological networks change during eutrophication. Furthermore, because of the rich biological record preserved in their sediments, shallow lakes represent potentially important models for examining long‐term intergenerational dynamics, thereby providing a means by which models and data can be integrated on meaningful timescales – a goal that has long proved elusive in food web ecology.  相似文献

Saxifraga paniculata Mill. is an amphi-atlantic species that is widely distributed in the Alps but also occurs with disjunct populations in central Europe. These isolated populations are considered to be glacial relicts. In the study presented here, we analysed the genetic variation within and between populations of Saxifraga paniculata in central Europe to test whether the molecular data give evidence for the supposed relict endemism. We used RAPD analysis and the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) technique to investigate 30 populations of Saxifraga paniculata from different locations in central Europe and adjacent geographical areas. In the RAPD analysis, 319 fragments could be amplified of which 91.2% were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphic bands within populations correlated significantly with population size, indicating a higher level of inbreeding in small populations. AMOVA revealed 43.60% of the variation within populations, only 15.45% between populations within locations, and 40.95% between locations. Genetic distance between locations (ΦST) correlated significantly with the geographical distance between locations, giving evidence for geographical isolation. In an UPGMA cluster analysis, based on RAPD data, the populations were grouped together according to their location. The results exhibit a strong genetic differentiation which is obviously due to genetic drift in the isolated populations.
