SYNOPSIS. Lepidopteran juvenile hormone (JH) esterase appearsto have a functional role in the regulation of embryogenesis,larval growth and development, and adult reproduction. In preovipositionaland newly laid eggs of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta,JH esterase activity was elevated presumably to metabolize maternalJHs, and then declined after blastoderm formation. Also, a singlepeak in hemolymph JH esterase activity was found prior to ecdysisin the second through the fourth instar of M. sexta, the functionof which is unclear. However, in the last instar, elevated hemolymphJH esterase activity was noted prior to wandering and againprior to ecdysis to scavenge the last traces of JH necessaryfor normal development. The hemolymph JH esterase is likelyof multiple tissue origin for the prewandering peak with thefat body excluded as a source for the prepupal peak; an inhibitoryfactor from the brain and JH regulate JH esterase biosynthesis.In adult cabbage loopers, Trichoplusia ni, elevated hemolymphJH esterase activity appeared to be important in reducing theJH titer and preventing egg maturation. Structure/activity datawith trifluoromethylketones were incorporated into the designof a novel, JH esterase inhibitor, the sulfone and hydrate ofoctylthio-1,1,1- trifluoropropan-2-one, with selective and persistent,in vivo inhibitory activity. The topical application of thiscompound to last instar larvae and virgin adults of T. ni producedjuvenizing effects (delayed pupation and induced egg maturation/oviposition,respectively) providing direct evidence of a functional rolefor JH esterase in lepidopteran development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Models of habitat suitability in postfire landscapes are needed by land managers to make timely decisions regarding postfire timber harvest and other management activities. Many species of cavity-nesting birds are dependent on postfire landscapes for breeding and other aspects of their life history and are responsive to postfire management activities (e.g., timber harvest). In addition, several cavity nesters are designated as species at risk. We compare the ability of 2 types of models to distinguish between nest and non-nest locations of 6 cavity-nesting bird species (Lewis's woodpecker [Melanerpes lewis], black-backed woodpecker [Picoides arcticus], hairy woodpecker [P. villosus], northern flicker [Colaptes auratus], western bluebird [Sialia mexicana], and mountain bluebird [S. currucoides]) in the early postfire years for a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest in Idaho, USA. The 2 model sets consisted of 1) models based on readily available remotely sensed data and 2) models containing field-collected data in addition to remotely sensed data (combination models). We evaluated models of nesting habitat by quantifying the model's ability to correctly identify nest and non-nest locations and by determining the percentage of correctly identified nest locations. Additionally, we developed relative habitat-suitability maps for nesting habitat of black-backed and Lewis's woodpeckers from the best models. For all species except Lewis's woodpeckers, model performance improved with the addition of field-collected data. Models containing remotely sensed data adequately distinguished between nest and non-nest locations for black-backed woodpecker and Lewis's woodpecker only, whereas models containing both field-collected and remotely sensed data were adequate for all 6 species. Improvements in the availability of more accurate remote sensing technology would likely lead to improvements in the ability of the models to predict nesting locations. External validation with data from other wildfires is necessary to confirm the general applicability of our habitat-suitability models to other forests. Land managers responsible for maintaining habitat for cavity-nesting birds in postfire landscapes can use these models to identify potential nesting areas for these species and select areas in burned forests where postfire salvage logging is most likely to have minimal impacts on cavity-nesting bird habitats.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of light and gibberellic acid (GA3) on growth and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity were studied in seedlings of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Using an in vivo assay for PAL it was shown that wounding caused by excising hypocotyls results in an increase in PAL activity with time that can mask the effect of light on the activity of this enzyme. When hypocotyl sections were excised from light-treated seedlings immediately prior to the in vivo assay of PAL, light was shown to cause a marked increase in PAL activity. Experiments with an inhibitor of PAL activity, α-aminooxy-β-phenylpropionic acid (AOPP), confirmed that the volatile radioactive products measured in the in vivo assay resulted from the activity of PAL. Gibberellic acid suppresses the light-induced increase in PAL activity and there is an inverse relationship between GA3-induced growth and the activity of PAL. Over a wide range of GA3 concentrations, the activity of PAL is also inversely correlated with growth rate along the length of the hypocotyl section; the upper halves of sections elongate more rapidly and have lower levels of PAL than the lower halves. Despite the strong correlation between growth and PAL activity, experiments with AOPP and t-cinnamic acid show that it is unlikely that elongation is regulated directly by products of PAL activity.  相似文献

Applications of lithium chloride (LiCl), zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) or nickel sulphate (NiSO4) to the roots of sugar-beet plants in the glasshouse encouraged settling on the leaves of adult apterae from a clone of Myzus persicae (Sulz.); conversely, treatment with boric acid (H2B2O7) inhibited aphid settling. Larviposition of M. persicae was increased by NiSO4 and tin chloride (SnCl2). Viruliferous M. persicae transmitted beet yellows virus (BYV) more efficiently to plants treated with LiCl or H2B2O7 than to those treated with copper sulphate (CuSO4), ZnSO4 or SnCl2. The sulphate and chloride anions of the applied chemicals appeared to have little effect on M. persicae and virus transmission. It is suggested that applications of trace elements to sugar beet affected M. persicae and virus transmission by changing the concentrations of trace elements in the aphids' diet and by altering the metabolism of the leaf tissues in the host plant.  相似文献

1. Small permanent streams are coming under increasing pressure for water abstraction. Although these abstractions might only be required on a short‐term basis (e.g. summer time irrigation), the highest demand for water often coincides with seasonal low flows. 2. We constructed weirs and diversions that reduced discharge in three small streams (<4 m width) to test the hypotheses that short‐term water abstractions would decrease habitat availability and suitability for invertebrates, resulting in increased invertebrate drift, reduced taxonomic richness and decreased benthic invertebrate densities. 3. We sampled benthic invertebrates, invertebrate drift and periphyton at control (upstream) and impact (downstream) sites on each stream before and during 1 month of discharge reduction. 4. Discharge decreased by an average of 89–98% at impact sites and wetted width decreased by 24–30%. Water depth decreased by 28–64% while velocity decreased by 50–62%. Water conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen showed varying responses to flow reduction among the three streams, whereas algal biomass and pH were unaffected in all streams. 5. The densities of invertebrate taxa tended to increase in the impact reaches of these streams, even though invertebrate drift increased at impact sites in the first few days following discharge reduction. There were a higher proportion of mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies at the impact site on one stream after flow reduction. There were no changes to the number of taxa or species evenness at impact sites. 6. Our results suggest that for these small streams, the response of invertebrates to short‐term discharge reduction was to accumulate in the decreased available area, increasing local invertebrate density.  相似文献

Cell walls of tips and bases of laminae of flag leaves from 11 cultivars of winter wheat of varying susceptibility to Puccinia striiforntis yellow rust) were compared by examining their phenolic components released by treatment with a commercial cellulase. Isolated cell walls of both susceptible and resistant cultivars released water-soluble carbohydrate esters of phenolic acids, the major acid detected being trans-ferulic. There was no relationship between the amount of phenolic esters released by cellulase and susceptibility to yellow rust. The leaf lamina tips, which were much more susceptible to yellow rust than the corresponding bases, had lower cell wall contents than the bases and their walls were more degradable by cellulase. Examination of transverse sections of leaf laminae of cv. Little Joss showed that cells whose walls contained phenolic groups that gave a red colour reaction with p-nitrobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate, occupied a larger area of leaf lamina bases than of the tips. A greater percentage of the abaxial epidermal cells of the bases, compared with the tips, had walls that gave this red colour reaction. We suggest that the presence of phenolic groups in these walls may be related to the greater resistance of the bases to P. striiforntis.  相似文献
