Dispersal ability is a key determinant of the propensity of an organism to cope with habitat fragmentation and climate change. Here we quantify queen dispersal in two common bumblebee species in an arable landscape. Dispersal was measured by taking DNA samples from workers in the spring and summer, and from queens in the following spring, at 14 sites across a landscape. The queens captured in the spring must be full sisters of workers that were foraging in the previous year. A range of sibship reconstruction methods were compared using simulated data sets including or no genotyping errors. The program Colony gave the most accurate reconstruction and was used for our analysis of queen dispersal. Comparison of queen dispersion with worker foraging distances was used to take into account an expected low level of false identification of sister pairs which might otherwise lead to overestimates of dispersal. Our data show that Bombus pascuorum and B. lapidarius queens can disperse by at least 3 and 5 km, respectively. These estimates are consistent with inferences drawn from studies of population structuring in common and rare bumblebee species, and suggest that regular gene flow over several kilometres due to queen dispersal are likely to be sufficient to maintain genetic cohesion of ubiquitous species over large spatial scales whereas rare bumblebee species appear unable to regularly disperse over distances greater than 10 km. Our results have clear implications for conservation strategies for this important pollinator group, particularly when attempting to conserve fragmented populations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Silent‐site nucleotide diversity data (πsilent) can provide insights into the forces driving genome evolution. Here we present πsilent statistics for the mitochondrial and nuclear DNAs of Polytomella parva, a nonphotosynthetic green alga with a highly reduced, linear fragmented mitochondrial genome. We show that this species harbors very little genetic diversity, with the exception of the mitochondrial telomeres, which have an excess of polymorphic sites. These data are compared with previously published πsilent values from the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes of the model species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri, which are close relatives of P. parva, and are used to understand the modes and tempos of genome evolution within green algae.  相似文献

Climate warming causes range shifts of many species toward higher latitudes and altitudes. However, range shifts of host species do not necessarily proceed at the same rates as those of their enemies and symbionts. Here, we examined how a range shifting plant species performs in soil from its original range in comparison with soil from the expansion range. Tragopogon dubius is currently expanding from southern into north-western Europe and we examined how this plant species responds to soil communities from its original and expansion ranges. We compared the performance of T. dubius with that of the closely related Tragopogon pratensis , which has a natural occurrence along the entire latitudinal gradient. Inoculation with the rhizosphere soil from T. dubius populations of the original range had a more negative effect on plant biomass production than inoculation with rhizosphere soil from the expansion range. Interestingly, the nonrange expander T. pratensis experienced a net negative soil effect throughout this entire range. The effects observed in this species pair may be due to release from soil born enemies or accumulation of beneficial soil born organisms. If this phenomenon applies broadly to other species, then range expansion may enable plants species to show enhanced performance.  相似文献

The early stages of primordial development are described for five boletes, six species of Russulaceae, two of Lentinellaceae and a single species of Hohenbuehelia (Tricholomataceae). The taxonomic significance of the observations is discussed.  相似文献

The necessity of injury, nerves, and wound epidermis for urodele limb regeneration is well accepted. Whether one or more of these three factors is limiting in amputated nonregenerating limbs of other vertebrates is a problem area in need of resolution. One view, that higher vertebrates possess inadequate innervation for limb regeneration to occur, is not strongly supported by experimental results. Superinnervation of lizard and mammalian limbs fails to elicit limb regeneration. Furthermore, in the well-known cases of mammalian regeneration, deer antlers and rabbit ears, a nerve requirement has not been demonstrated.
In urodeles, the wound epidermis has recently been shown to have the role of maintaining dedifferentiated cells of the amputated limb stump in the cell cycle. The result of this wound epidermal stimulus is a sufficient number of cell divisions such that blastema formation occurs.
We postulate that in amputated limbs of higher vertebrates, the wound epidermis is nonfunctional. Dedifferentiated or undifferentiated cells are not maintained in the cell cycle and blastema formation therefore does not occur. Instead, tissue regeneration occurs precociously due to lack of a cycling stimulus. The scar tissue which forms at the limb tips of nonregenerating vertebrates is the result of a nonfunctional wound epidermis.  相似文献

1. One major, yet poorly studied, change in the environment is the increase in nocturnal light pollution. Although this strongly alters the habitat of nocturnal species, the ecological consequences are poorly known. Moths are well known to be attracted to artificial light sources, but artificial light may affect them in other ways as well. 2. In this study, female Mamestra brassicae moths were subjected to various types of low‐intensity artificial night lighting with contrasting spectral compositions (green‐rich, red‐rich, warm white) or to a dark control treatment and the effects on their sex pheromone production and composition were tested. 3. Artificial night lighting reduced sex pheromone production and altered the chemical composition of the pheromone blend, irrespective of spectral composition. Specifically, amounts of the main pheromone component Z11‐16:Ac were reduced, while the deterring compounds Z9‐14:Ac, Z9‐16:Ac, and Z11‐16:OH were increased relative to Z11‐16:Ac when females were kept under artificial light. These changes may reduce the effectiveness of the sex pheromones, becoming less attractive for males. 4. These results show for the first time that artificial light at night affects processes that are involved in moth reproduction. The potential for mitigation through manipulation of the spectral composition of artificial light appears limited.  相似文献
