We measured the carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of stem cellulose of Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica and Fraxinus excelsior. Several sites along a transect of a small valley in Switzerland were selected which differ in soil moisture conditions. At every site, six trees per species were sampled, and a sample representing a mean value for the period from 1940 to 1990 was analysed. For all species, the mean site δ13C and δ18O of stem cellulose are related to the soil moisture availability, whereby higher isotope ratios are found at drier sites. This result is consistent with isotope fractionation models when assuming enhanced stomatal resistance (thus higher δ13C of incorporated carbon) and increased oxygen isotope enrichment in the leaf water (thus higher δ18O) at the dry sites. δ18 O-δ13C plots reveal a linear relationship between the carbon and oxygen isotopes in cellulose. To interpret this relationship we developed an equation which combines the above-mentioned fractionation models. An important new parameter is the degree to which the leaf water enrichment is reflected in the stem cellulose. In the combined model the slope of the δ18O-δ13C plot is related to the sensitivity of the pi/pa of a plant to changing relative humidity.  相似文献

Avenacin, the resistance factor ioat roots against Ophiobolus graminisi ν graminis, and a related triterpeneglycoside, aescin, inhibited growth of various fungi, while the growth of a few fungi was unaffected. The triterpenoidal saponins tested seemed to be fungicidal, as the mycelia did not grow after exposure to the inhibitors. The fungicidal effect, however, depended on the medium used. The inhibitors did not seem to act primarily on the endogenous respiration, since the oxygen uptake, although much reduced, continued after the time required to destroy the growth capacity. The leakage of UV-absorbing substances from fungi, sensitive to the inhibitors, and the decrease of UV-absorbing substances in the transient pool of the cells indicate a change in the cell membrane.  相似文献

A jagged fracture array on a hypostome of Ceraurinella from Ordovician strata of northern Canada records an unsuccessful attempt at predation by an unknown animal. The traumatic injury was repaired from the interior during the same intermoult period that it had been inflicted.  相似文献

The first extensive and stratigraphically detailed taxonomic study of the Middle to Late Eocene Bryozoa of the St Vincent Basin has identified more than 200 species of Cheilostomata and 50 species of Cyclostomata. There are three biogeographic groups: basin endemic, Australian and global. Two-thirds (116) of the cheilostome species and seven genera are currently considered endemic to this basin. Most species are endemic to Australia and similar to those found in the Oligo-Miocene of Victoria. The Cellariidae are a common component of most Australian Cainozoic deposits, but the species are highly dissimilar, with 13 of the 17 species here being new. The global component indicates that biogeographic links with regions outside Australia still existed in the Eocene. The cyclostome genus Reticrescis is only known from the Australian and Antarctic Eocene. Ten genera have their first occurrence in the Eocene St Vincent Basin. The Phidoloporidae and Smittinidae represent the most diverse and ubiquitous groups at a geological time close to their time of origination. Contemporaneous sediments in Antarctica, eastern Europe and North America also have a diverse fauna of this family, pointing to a strong Tethyan link. Rhamphosmittina lateralis (MacGillivray) is still extant in New Zealand, having an exceptionally long time range of 40 million years. Overall, the fauna has a distinct Late Cretaceous character. A new genus of Onychocellidae appears similar to genera that were common in Cretaceous Tethyan faunas but rare during the Cainozoic. This similarity ends in the Oligocene, after which the Australian bryozoan became endemic  相似文献

External and internal head structures of adults of Galloisiana yuasai (Grylloblattodea) are described. The results are compared with conditions found in representatives of other lower neopteran lineages, notably in Austrophasma and Karoophasma (both Mantophasmatodea). Sutures and ridges of the head capsule are discussed. A new nomenclature for head muscles is presented for the entire Dicondylia (= Zygentoma + Pterygota). Galloisiana (like its sister taxon Grylloblatta) is mostly characterized by plesiomorphic features, such as the largely unspecialized orthopteroid mouthparts, the multisegmented filiform antennae, the presence of trabeculae tentorii, the absence of muscles associated with the antennal ampullae, the presence of musculus stipitalis transversalis (0mx11) and the presence of musculus tentoriofrontalis anterior (0te2). Autapomorphies of Grylloblattodea are: (i) compound eyes composed of only 60 ommatidia or less; (ii) a lacinia with a proximal tooth; (iii) a rounded submentum; (iv) loss of musculus craniohypopharyngealis (0hy3); and (v) loss of musculus labroepipharyngealis (0lb5). The phylogenetic evaluation of 104 characters of the head yields a branching pattern with Grylloblattodea as a sister group of Mantophasmatodea in clade Xenonomia. Putative synapomorphies of both taxa are: (i) a distinct angle (more than 60°) between the submentum and the mentum; (ii) posteriorly oriented labial palpi; (iii) a flat and lobe‐like hypopharynx with a suspensorium far ventrad of the anatomical mouth opening; (iv) loss of musculus tentorioparaglossalis (0la6); and (v) a connection between the antennal ampulla and the supraoesophageal ganglion containing nuclei. Xenonomia is placed in a clade with the two dictyopteran terminals. Another monophyletic group is Embioptera + Phasmatodea. Most branches of the single tree obtained in our analysis are weakly supported. The results clearly show that more data and a much broader taxon sampling are required to clarify the phylogenetic interrelationships of the lower neopteran orders. However, our results narrow down the spectrum of possible solutions, and represent a starting point for future phylogenetic analyses, with an extensive concatenated dataset.  相似文献

1. Studies of insect communities rarely support the parasitoid–host regulation hypothesis. Spatio‐temporal variation in parasitoid prevalence due to complex food web interactions or abiotic factors may prevent parasitoids from regulating hosts. 2. We examined the relative contribution of spatial (altitude) and temporal (years) sources to total variation in parasitoid prevalence rates in outbreaks of Epirrita autumnata Borkhausen and Operophtera brumata Linnaeus populations. We tested whether prevalence rates of generalist parasitoids were correlated between sympatric host populations and to what extent any of the parasitoids were host density dependent. 3. Four larval parasitoids (two specialists and two generalists) exhibited significantly structured spatio‐temporal dynamics over years and altitudes. The prevalence rates of one of the generalists were spatio‐temporally correlated between the two host species, while for the other they were not. 4. Three parasitoids showed tendencies for direct or delayed positive density dependence as expected from numerical and functional responses to their hosts. However, the effects were weak and minute compared to the variation attributed to year and altitude. 5. We conclude that unknown aspects of the larval parasitoid ecology that co‐vary with altitude and year in the study system dominate their prevalence dynamics and thus act to hinder density‐dependent responses that could potentially regulate host populations.  相似文献

A single male specimen of a new species (†Kinzelbachilla ellenbergeri gen. et sp.n. ) of a new family of the endoparasitic Strepsiptera (†Kinzelbachillidae fam.n.) from Burmese amber is described and evaluated with respect to its systematic placement. Its features come very close to the presumptive groundplan of the order suggested in recent studies. Preserved plesiomorphic features are the following: fully sclerotized head with long coronal suture, small ommatidia not separated by chitinous bridges, absence of microtrichia between ommatidia, eight antennomeres, robust mandibles with dicondylic articulation, galea distinctly developed, free pro‐ and mesotrochanters, slender five‐segmented tarsi without adhesive soles, and equally sclerotized abdominal tergites and sternites. An important character that is not recognizable due to damage is the shape of the metapostnotum. This structure is transverse in the groundplan of Strepsiptera and in †Protoxenos, but elongated and shield‐like in all other known strepsipterans. In a cladistic analyses of 82 characters of adult males and additional characters for females and immatures (scored as unknown for all included fossils) †Kinzelbachilla is placed as sister group of all remaining strepsipterans except for †Protoxenos, followed by †Cretostylops and †Mengea as the third and fourth branches in the stem group, respectively. The position of †Protoxenos as first branch is suggested by three unambiguous apomorphic features of all remaining Strepsiptera, the reduced size of less than 6 mm, mandibles distinctly narrowing distad the basalmost part, and fan‐shaped hindwings which are broader than they are long. The hitherto known fossil stem group strepsipterans do not distinctly narrow the large morphological gap separating this order from its sister group, the Coleoptera.
