ABSTRACT The conservation of bison (Bison bison) from near extinction to >4,000 animals in Yellowstone National Park has led to conflict regarding overabundance and potential transmission of brucellosis (Brucella abortus) to cattle. We estimated survival and birth rates from 53 radiocollared adult female bison during 1995–2001, and we used calf:adult (C:A) ratios to estimate reproduction with the combined effects of pregnancy, fetal loss, and neonatal mortality during 1970–1997. Annual survival of adult females was high (0.92; 95% CI = 0.87-0.95) and constant. Birth rates differed by brucellosis status and age. Birth rates were 0.40 calves per female (95% CI = 0.15-0.65) for brucellosis-positive 3 year olds, 0.63 (95% CI = 0.39-0.87) for individuals testing negative, and 0.10 (95% CI = 0.00-0.24) for individuals contracting brucellosis that birth year (sero-converters). Birth rates were 0.64 (95% CI = 0.52-0.76) for brucellosis-positive individuals ≥4 years old, 0.81 (95% CI = 0.73-0.89) for brucellosis-negative individuals, and 0.22 (95% CI = 0.00-0.46) for sero-converters. Spring C:A ratios were negatively correlated with snow pack (β = −0.01 to −0.03, R2 = 0.26-0.60, P < 0.05). Growth rate was highly elastic to adult survival (0.51), and juvenile survival (0.36) was 3 times more elastic than fecundity (0.12). Simulations suggested brucellosis eradication via vaccination would result in increased birth rates and a 29% increase in population growth (γ = 1.09), possibly leading to more bison movements outside the park. Our results will help park managers evaluate bison population dynamics and explore consequences of management actions and disease control programs.  相似文献

Lepidaster grayi Forbes, 1850, from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation (Silurian: Wenlock) of England, is the earliest species of starfish (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) to deviate from pentaradial symmetry, having 13 rays rather than five. Based on the patterns of supernumerary ray development seen in extant multiradiate asteroids, two possible models are evaluated for the origin of the eight additional rays seen in L. grayi . In the 'all-in-one' model, all rays were added in the same interradius, whereas in the 'quadrants' model generations of rays would have been added in each of four interradii. The smallest specimen of L. grayi , apparently having only nine rays, suggests that the 'quadrants' model is most probable for the species. The presence of supernumerary rays in Silurian starfish, coupled with the existence of numerous other Palaeozoic multiradiate taxa, shows that asteroids have been able to deviate from pentamerism for most of their evolutionary history, and the variety of methods of supernumerary ray addition indicates that the multiradiate condition is homoplastic. The ecological significance of multiradiate Palaeozoic starfish is reviewed: the mouth frame of L. grayi had considerably greater flexibility than that of contemporaneous five-rayed species and, in combination with its supernumerary rays, enabled L. grayi to manipulate and consume larger food items. Abstract:  In Ordovician ostracodes (genus Incisua ) a new kind of sexual dimorphism is described, which is the first example among this group with males being the heteromorphs. The valves of males are larger and less frequent than the females, and are characterized by having a furrow in the ventral part. The furrow may have functioned as a device to enable the two sexes to cling together during mating.  相似文献

Changes in net CO2 assimilation rate (A) are often partitioned into contributions from changes in different variables using an approach that is based on an expression from calculus: namely the definition of the exact differential of A, which states that an infinitesimal change in A (dA) is equal to the sum of infinitesimal changes in each of the underlying variables, each multiplied by the partial derivative of A with respect to the variable. Finite changes in A can thus be partitioned by integrating this sum across a finite interval. The most widely used method of estimating that integral is a coarse discrete approximation that uses partial derivatives of the natural logarithm of A rather than A itself. This yields biased and ambiguous estimates of partitioned changes in A. We present an alternative partitioning approach based on direct numerical integration of dA. The new approach does not require any partial derivatives to be computed, and it can be applied under any conditions to estimate the contributions from changes in any photosynthetic variable. We demonstrate this approach using field measurements of both seasonal and diurnal changes in assimilation rate, and we provide a spreadsheet implementing the new approach.  相似文献

Abstract There is limited understanding of how fire‐related cues such as heat shock and smoke can combine to affect the germination response of seeds from fire‐prone vegetation because combinations of multiple levels of both cues have rarely been investigated. Germination response surfaces were determined for the combination of heat shock and smoke by applying factorial combinations of temperature (up to 100°C) and aerosol smoke (0–20 min) to 16 species that form soil seed banks in the Sydney region of south‐eastern Australia. Duplicate populations of three species were also examined to assess the constancy of a species response surface. Of the 19 populations examined, 16 showed a germination response to both the fire cues, which combined interactively in 14 populations, and independently in two. No population responded only to a single cue; however, seeds of 11 populations responded to heat in the absence of smoke, and nine responded to smoke in the absence of heat. Heat applied in the absence of smoke negatively affected germination in seven populations, either progressively as temperature increased, or above a set temperature. Negative germination responses over part of the temperature range were fully reversed at higher temperatures for unsmoked seeds of four populations (curvilinear heat response). Smoke effects were most frequently positive over all or part of the range of durations used, and when combined with heat frequently fully or partially reversed negative heat effects. Three populations required the obligatory combination of smoke and heat. A novel response to the cues was observed for three species, with smoke reversing negative heat effects at 75°C, being supplanted by a positive heat response of unsmoked seed at 100°C. The response surface for duplicate populations of two of the three species examined was variable. Heat shock and smoke frequently combined to affect germination, in both positive and negative ways. Consequently, to gain an accurate assessment of the response of seeds to fires, an experimental design that samples within the potential response zones of germination cues is essential.  相似文献

Abstract Data from a 12‐year field study have allowed us to quantify ‘costs of reproduction’ in a natural population of water pythons (Liasis fuscus) in tropical Australia. Both sexes of pythons cease feeding during the reproductive season. For males, this involves fasting for a 6 week period. Adult males lose weight rapidly over this period (approximately 17% of their body mass) but regain condition in the following months, and do not experience reduced survival. In contrast, reproductive adult females cease feeding for 3 months, lose an average of 44% of their body mass over this period, and experience increased mortality. A causal link between reproductive output and reduced female survival is supported by (i) a decrease in survival rates at female maturation; (ii) a correlation between survival rates and frequency of reproduction, in a comparison among different size classes of adult pythons; and (iii) a lowered survival rate for females that allocated more energy to reproduction. Hence, both sexes experience substantial energy costs of reproduction, but a relatively higher energy cost translates into a survival cost only in females. Such non‐linearities in the relationship between energy costs and survival costs may be widespread, and challenge the value of simple energy‐based measures of 'reproductive effort’.  相似文献

The succession of earliest Ordovician planktic graptolites (graptoloids) in 11 key sequences around the world is reviewed and used to assess their distribution in depth facies, in paleolatitude and in time. An ecostratigraphic model shows the pattern of distribution of species across the shore-to-ocean profile in time. Fluctuations in this pattern are related to eustatic change; the Acerocare, Black Mountain, Ceratopyge and possibly, the Peltocare Regressive events are recognized. Surface-water temperature is found to have had little significant effect on distribution of Early Tremadoc species, and once the effects of facies is allowed for, their biostratigraphic utility can be assessed. A global suite of four chronozones is proposed for the Early Tremadoc and a further five zones comprise a provisional suite for the Late Tremadoc. The nine zones enable precise correlation of Tremadoc graptolitic sequences. The zones replace the previously used graptolite assemblages, are correlated with key conodont horizons and are, in upward sequence, the Zones of Rhabdinopora praeparabola, R. flabelliformis parabola, Anisograptus matanensis, R. f. anglica, Adelograptus, Paradelograptus antiquus, Kiaerograptus, Araneograptus murrayi-Araneograptus pulchellus , and Hunnegraptus copiosus.  相似文献

The causes and consequences of biodiversity are central themes in ecology. Perhaps one reason for much of the current interest in biodiversity is the belief that the loss of species (by extinction) or their gain (by invasion) will significantly influence ecosystem function. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are components of most terrestrial ecosystems and, while many research programs have shown that variability among species or isolates of AM fungi does occur (Giovannetti & Gianinazzi-Pearson, 1994), the basis for this variability and its consequences to the function of communities and ecosystems remains largely unexplored. Smith et al . (pp. 357–366 in this issue) now show clearly that ecologically significant functional diversity exists among AM fungal species in the regions of the soil from which they absorb phosphate, and their results suggest that such diversity may have significant ecological consequences.  相似文献

Terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is an important parameter to explore and quantify carbon fixation by plant ecosystems at various scales. Remote sensing (RS) offers a unique possibility to investigate GPP in a spatially explicit fashion; however, budgeting of terrestrial carbon cycles based on this approach still remains uncertain. To improve calculations, spatio-temporal variability of GPP must be investigated in more detail on local and regional scales. The overarching goal of this study is to enhance our knowledge on how environmentally induced changes of photosynthetic light-use efficiency (LUE) are linked with optical RS parameters. Diurnal courses of sun-induced fluorescence yield ( F Syield) and the photochemical reflectance index of corn were derived from high-resolution spectrometric measurements and their potential as proxies for LUE was investigated. GPP was modeled using Monteith's LUE-concept and optical-based GPP and LUE values were compared with synoptically acquired eddy covariance data. It is shown that the diurnal response of complex physiological regulation of photosynthesis can be tracked reliably with the sun-induced fluorescence. Considering structural and physiological effects, this research shows for the first time that including sun-induced fluorescence into modeling approaches improves their results in predicting diurnal courses of GPP. Our results support the hypothesis that air- or spaceborne quantification of sun-induced fluorescence yield may become a powerful tool to better understand spatio-temporal variations of fluorescence yield, photosynthetic efficiency and plant stress on a global scale.  相似文献
