1. The way light stress controls the recruitment of aquatic plants (phanerogams and charophytes) is a key process controlling plant biodiversity, although still poorly understood. Our aim was to investigate how light stress induced by phytoplankton, that is, independent from the aquatic plants themselves, determines the recruitment and establishment of plant species from the propagule bank. The hypotheses were that an increase in light stress (i) decreases abundance and species richness both of established aquatic plants and of propagules in the bank and (ii) decreases the recruitment success of plants from this bank. 2. These hypotheses were tested in 25 shallow lakes representing a light stress gradient, by sampling propagule banks before the recruitment phase and when the lakes are devoid of actively growing plants (i.e. at the end of winter), established vegetation at the beginning of the summer and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) during the recruitment and establishment phase. 3. The phytoplankton biomass was negatively correlated with the richness and abundance of established vegetation but was not correlated with the propagule bank (neither species richness nor propagule abundance). The similarity between the propagule bank and established vegetation decreased significantly with increasing phytoplankton biomass. 4. The contrast in species composition between the vegetation and the propagule bank at the highest light stress suggests poor recruitment from the propagule bank but prompts questions about its origin. It could result from dispersal of propagules from neighbouring systems. Propagules could also originate from a persistent propagule bank formerly produced in the lake, suggesting strong year‐to‐year variation in light stress and, as a consequence, in recruitment and reproductive success of plants.  相似文献

Assessment of ecological status in U.K. rivers using diatoms   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
1. The European Union's Water Framework Directive requires all water bodies to achieve ‘good ecological status’ by 2015 and this paper describes a rationale for defining ‘good ecological status’ based on diatoms, a significant component of the biological quality element ‘macrophyte and phytobenthos’. 2. A database of benthic diatom samples collected over the past 20 years was assembled. New sampling, specifically for this project, was undertaken during 2004 to supplement these data. In total 1051 samples were included in the database with matching environmental data. 3. ‘Reference sites’, relatively unimpacted by human activity, were selected from this database by a series of screening steps and these sites were used to develop a site‐specific reference typology. 4. Environmental variables not related to the pressure gradient were used to predict the ‘expected’ Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) values at each site. Site‐specific TDI predictions were used to generate ecological quality ratios (EQRs) ranging from ≥1, where the diatom assemblage showed no impact, to (theoretically) 0, when the diatom assemblage was indicative of major anthropogenic activities. 5. The boundary between ‘high’ and ‘good’ status was defined as the 25th percentile of EQRs of all reference sites. The boundary between ‘good’ and ‘moderate’ status was set at the point at which nutrient‐sensitive and nutrient‐tolerant taxa were present in equal relative abundance. In a few homoiothermic host species, Eimeria spp. in a schizogonic stage, a gamogonic stage, or as resting sporozoites infect nonepithelial tissues. However, epithelium serves as a critical site in the cycle of these and all other species known from warm-blooded hosts. Eimeria funduli, infecting at least four different killifishes, undergoes both schizogony and gamogony in non-epithelial hepatic and pancreatic cells and requires an invertebrate host to complete its cycle. Oocysts are not released from the living fish into the environment. The cycle for this species, or aspects of it, may exemplify those found in several piscine species infecting nonepithelial (and possibly epithelial) cells. Eimeriu funduli differs from most species of Eimeria infecting homoiotherms in other respects, some of which may also characterize traits for piscine and other poikilotherm eimerians in general. Endogenous development is affected by temperature and host-age, sporogony occurs in the host, and infections occur in several related fishes. The presence of an intermediate host in at least E. funduli and the presence of sporozoites in macrophages of several eimerians of homoiotherms, as well as other features, suggest a closer relationship between eimeriids and Lankesterella, Schellackia, and even the Haemosporina than previously assumed.  相似文献

Viviparity in reptiles is hypothesized to evolve in cold climates at high latitudes and high elevations through selection for progressively longer periods of egg retention. Oxygen consumption of embryos increases during development and therefore longer periods of egg retention should be associated with maternal or embryonic features that enhance embryonic oxygen availability. We tested the hypotheses that embryos of the oviparous lizard Sceloporus undulatus from a high-latitude population in New Jersey are oviposited at more advanced developmental stages and have a higher growth rate at low oxygen partial pressures ( p O2) than embryos from a low-latitude population in South Carolina. These hypotheses were rejected; embryos from the two populations did not differ in embryonic stage at oviposition, survival, rate of differentiation or growth in mass when incubated under simulated in utero conditions at low oxygen concentrations. We also estimated the effective p O2 experienced by lizard embryos in utero . At an effective p O2 of 8.6 kPa (9% O2), development of S. undulatus embryos is arrested at Dufaure and Hubert stage 30 and at a dry mass of 0.8 mg. Physiological and morphological features of gravid females, embryos, or both, that facilitate oxygen uptake for developing embryos appear to be a critical early step during the evolution of reptilian viviparity. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 289–299.  相似文献

Surveys of tropical insects are increasingly uncovering cryptic species – morphologically similar yet reproductively isolated taxa once thought to comprise a single interbreeding entity. The vast majority of such species are described from a single location. This leaves us with little information on geographic range and intraspecific variation and limits our ability to infer the forces responsible for generating such diversity. For example, in herbivorous and parasitic insects, multiple specialists are often discovered within what were thought to be single more generalized species. Host shifts are likely to have contributed to speciation in these cases. But when and where did those shifts occur, and were they facilitated by geographic isolation? We attempted to answer these questions for two cryptic species within the butterfly Cymothoe egesta that were recently discovered on different host plants in central Cameroon. We first used mtDNA markers to separate individuals collected on the two hosts within Cameroon and then extended our analysis to incorporate individuals collected across the entire pan‐Afrotropical range of the original taxon. To our surprise, we found that the species are almost entirely allopatric, dividing the original range and overlapping only in the narrow zone of West‐Central Africa where they were first discovered in sympatry. This finding, combined with analyses of genetic variation within each butterfly species, strongly suggests that speciation occurred in allopatry, probably during the Pleistocene. We discuss the implications of our results for understanding speciation among other cryptic species recently discovered in the tropics and argue that more work is needed on geographic patterns and host usage in such taxa.  相似文献
