The ultrastructure of testa seed in the genus Neotinea (Orchidaceae, Orchidinae) was examined for the first time. The morphology of the seed and of the anticlinal and periclinal walls was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative data concerning the length and width of the seed and embryo, seed and embryo volume, free air space, and number of cells along the longitudinal axis are presented. In all species, the seeds are fusiform in shape with transverse ridges on the inner periclinal walls. This ornamentation pattern is characteristic for the genus Neotinea . A series of experiments was conducted to assess net CO2assimilationand growth responses to waterlogging of grafted and seedlingtrees in the genus Annona. Seedlings of A. glabra, A. muricataandA. squamosa L., and scions of ‘Gefner’ atemoya(A. squamosaxA. cherimola Mill.), ‘49-11’ (‘Gefner’atemoyaxA. reticulata L.), ‘4-5’ (‘Priestley’atemoyaxA. reticulata), A. reticulata grafted onto either A.glabra, A. reticulata orA. squamosa rootstocks were floodedfor up to 60 d. Soil anaerobiosis occurred on the third dayof flooding. Seedlings ofA. glabra and A. muricata, and thescions ‘49-11’, ‘Gefner’ atemoya, andA. reticulata grafted onto A. glabra rootstock were consideredflood tolerant based on their ability to survive and grow inflooded conditions. Scions of the normally flood-sensitive A.reticulata, ‘Gefner’ atemoya, and ‘49-11’tolerated root waterlogging when grafted onto the flood-tolerantspecies, A. glabra. In contrast, flooding of A. squamosa seedlingsand rootstocks, and A. reticulata rootstocks greatly reducedgrowth and net CO2assimilation rates, and resulted in 20–80%tree mortality. Stem anatomical responses to long-term flooding(12 continuous months) were assessed in seedlings of A. glabraand A. muricata, and trees of ‘49-11’ grafted ontoA. glabra. Flooded trees developed hypertrophied stem lenticels,particularly in A. glabra, and enlarged xylem cells resultingin thicker stems with reduced xylem density. Flooding did notincrease air spaces in pre-existing xylem near the pith or inxylem tissue that was formed during flooding. Thus, flood tolerancedid not involve aerenchyma formation in the stem. Migration of neural crest (NC) derived pigment cells is restricted in the white mutant (dd) axolotl embryo (Ambystoma mexicanum). Transplantations between mutant and wild type embryos show that the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the white mutant is unable to support the migration of prospective pigment cells in wild type embryos (Löfberg et al., 1989, Dev. Biol. 131:168–181). In the present study, we test the effects of various purified ECM molecules on NC cell migration in the subepidermal migratory pathway of wild type (D/-) and white mutant (dd) axolotl embryos. We adsorbed the ECM molecules onto membrane microcarriers, which were then implanted under the epidermis. Fibronectin (FN), tenascin (TN), collagens I and VI, and a chick aggrecan stimulated migration in both types of embryos. Laminin-nidogen, rat chondrosarcoma aggrecan, and shark aggrecan stimulated migration in dd embryos but did not affect migration in D/- embryos. Collagen III, fibromodulin and bovine aggrecan had no effect on migration in either type of embryo. NC cells did not migrate on control micro-carriers, which lacked ECM molecules. Some cells observed contacting, and presumably migrating on, coated microcarriers could be identified as pigment cells by their ultra-structure. Enzymatic digestion in vivo with chondroitinase ABC had no effect on NC cell migration. The neutral or stimulatory effect of the aggrecans is surprising; when tested in vitro they inhibited NC cell migration. The effect of three-dimensionality and other molecules present either in the embryonic ECM or in solution may overcome the inhibitory effect of aggrecans.  相似文献

1. The spatial niche shifts of the nymphs of two mayfly species (Rhithrogena semicolorata and Ecdyonurus sp, gr. venosus) in relation to their growth were investigated in two lowland springs of northern Italy where they are dominant species. 2. Ordination of the different size classes of the two species revealed a canonical trend related to season and bottom roughness. 3. Larger nymphs of both species colonized rougher substrata. Differences between species in the roughness of areas colonized by small nymphs, which were very numerous, may have been due to competition for space.  相似文献

Summary

Early stages of gametogenesis were observed in embryos of Megoura viciae Buckton at two temperatures, 24°C and 27°C. The higher temperature is lethal for male embryos but not for female embryos. Spermatogenesis proceeds to the synizesis contraction stage at both temperatures but goes no further at 27°C. All the spermatocytes degenerate prior to undergoing metaphase I and gamete degeneration is followed by the death of the male embryos. In oogenesis, synizesis lasts for much longer and no differential viability at the two temperatures can be observed. A possible explanation, related to the different timing of meiosis in the two sexes, is proposed and discussed.  相似文献
