Plant resistance, plant traits, and host plant choice of the leaf-folding sawfly on the arroyo willow 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. The hypotheses that genetic variation in host plant resistance of the arroyo willow affected leaf folder ( Phyllocolpa sp.) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) density and that genetic variation in shoot length and leaf length was correlated with resistance were tested.
2. Willows grown in pots and exposed to ovipojsition by the leaf folding sawfly in cages had significantly different densities among clones, indicating variation in resistance caused by genetic differences among conspecific host plants.
3. There was a general correspondence between leaf folder density on potted cuttings and on the plants in the field that were the sources of cuttings.
4. In behavioural choice experiments, susceptible clones (with highest leaf fold densities) had the highest oviposition activity of female leaf folders compared to clones that were resistant to the leaf folder.
5. Clones differed significantly in shoot length and leaf length among clones grown in pots, among clones in the field, and between shoots with galls and shoots without galls on clones in the field.
6. Leaf folder density was significantly positively correlated with mean shoot length on field clones in 1985 and 1986, but was not correlated with leaf length, although leaf length and shoot length were correlated.
7. Leaf length variation among willow clones accounted for a significant portion of the variation in resistance of potted willows, but shoot length was unimportant. 相似文献

Most male frogs in the genus Physalaemus produce a whine-like advertisement call. Male P. pustulosus , however, add chucks to the call. This enhances the attractiveness of the call to females, and has evolved under the influence of sexual selection despite the increased predation risk from the frog-eating bat ( Trachops cirrhosus ). This complex call is unusual, if not unique, among anurans because the two call components overlap in time. Here we investigate the morphological changes responsible for the production of complex calls.
The Physalaemus purtulosus species group consists of four species. Physalaemus pustulosus and P. petersi are sister species, and recently it has been shown that P. petersi produces chucks. Physalaemus coloradorum and P. purtulatus are sister species and neither is known to produce chucks. Two laryngeal characters vary within the species group. Physalaemus pustulosus has a large fibrous mass (FMI), whose vibration is responsible for production of the chuck. This mass is much smaller in the other three species. In P. pustulosus and P. petersi the FMI is anchored dorsally, deep within the bronchial process, the attachment is more extensive in P. pustulosus. Neither P. pustulatus nor P. coloradorum have such a dorsal attachment associated with their FMI. This character is responsible for allowing the FMI to vibrate independently of the vocal cords, that is, for the production of the complex call. Thus the morphological changes responsible for the evolution of this unusual behavioural innovation, the complex call, are gradual, and almost trival, in nature. This study also shows that the primitive condition of the larynx of the P. pustulosus and P. petersi ancestor, was predisposed to the production of complex calls.
We also document ontogenetic and sexually dimorphic patterns in larynx structure. 相似文献

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol, previously designed for amplification of a DNA fragment from aster yellows mycoplasmalike organism (MLO), was employed to investigate the detection of MLO DNA in field-collected and in vitro micropropagated plants. PCR with template DNA extracted from symptomatic, naturally-infected samples of Brassica, Chrysanthemum and Hydrangea, each yielded a DNA band corresponding to 1.0 Kbp. However, no DNA product was observed when either infected Ranunculus (with phyllody disease) or Gladiolus with (symptoms of ‘germs fins’) was used as source of template nucleic acid for PCR; further experiments indicated absence of target DNA in the case of Ranunculus and the presence of substances in Gladiolus which inhibited the PCR. The MLO-specific DNA was detected by PCR using less than 95 pg of total nucleic acid (equivalent to total nucleic acid from 1.9, ug tissue) in the case of field-collected Hydrangea and less than 11.4 pg of nucleic acid (equivalent to total nucleic acid from 19 ng of tissue) in the case of field-collected Brassica. The findings illustrate highly sensitive detection of MLOs in both field-grown and in vitro micropropagated infected plants. 相似文献

HATCHING ASYNCHRONY IN ALTRICIAL BIRDS 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
ROBERT D. MAGRATH 《Biological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society》1990,65(4):587-622
1. The review aims to provide a simple conceptual framework on which to place recent studies of hatching asynchrony in altricial birds and to assess the evidence used in support of specific hypotheses. 2. Hatching asynchrony arises bsecause parents start incubation before laying is complete, but the precision of parental control is largely unknown. 3. Hypothesses concerning the functional significance of hatching asynchrony fall into four broad types. Hatching asynchrony might: (i) arise because of selection on the timing of events during the nesting period; (ii) facilitate the adaptive reduction in brood size; (iii) increase the energetic efficiency of raising the brood, or (iv) result from environmental or phylogenetic constraints. 4. The incubation pattern could function to minimize the losses of eggs, nestlings or adults to predators (or climatic sources of mortality), particularly in species which cannot actively defend their nest. The best evidence comes from comparative studies of hatching asynchrony. Early incubation might also be favoured if the food supply declines sharply through the breeding season, although the evidence is weak and indirect, or if there is a risk of brood parasitism. In species in which only the female incubates, early incubation could ‘force’ the male to invest more in the nestlings, but this idea remains to be tested. Males may be constrained by the risk of cuckoldry to delay incubation until laying is complete. 5. Hatching asynchrony could be adaptive by enabling the efficient reduction of brood size if food proves short after hatching (primarily because of a shortage of food in the environment or possibly because of a large proportion of ‘expensive’ nestlings in the brood in species which are sexually dimorphic). Observational evidence is often consistent with this hypothesis but few experimental studies provide adequate tests. Brood reduction could be adaptive in species (primarily eagles and pelecaniformes) which lay an extra egg to act as insurance against hatching failure, and again hatching asynchrony might facilitate brood reduction, although there are few experimental tests on such species. Hatching asynchrony might also enable sex ratio manipulation through selective brood reduction, although there is as yet no clear supportive evidence. 6. Ins species in which young have a marked peak in energy demand during the period of parental care, hatching asynchrony can reduce the peak demand of the brood, which might allow the parents to raise more healthy young. In many species such savings are likely to be small or absent. There is some behavioural evidence that hatching asynchrony can reduce fighting amongst nestlings and therefore lead to the more efficient use of energy by the brood. In general this effect seems small and the only energetic study found no difference in the energy requirements of synchronous and asynchronous broods. Other possible energetic advantages to hatching asynchrony have not been tested. 7. Environmental conditions during laying can influence both egg size and laying interval in aerial insectivores, and might directly influence incubation in this and other groups. Thus some variation in hatching asynchrony and the relative size of siblings is probably non-adaptive. The variability of incubation pattern within and across species suggests that hatching asynchrony is not under strong phylogenetic constraint. 8. The hypotheses about the adaptive significance of hatching asynchrony are complementary rather than mutually exclusive: within a species, several selective pressures could influence the optimal incubation pattern, and the relative importance of selective pressures will differ among species. Furthermore one should expect that the incubation pattern and parent–offspring interactions will be coadapted to maximize brood productivity. 相似文献

In a study of pungency in food systems, three carriers (water, cheese sauce, starch paste) with varying fat levels (none, low, medium, high), synthetic capsaicin concentrations (0.0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.3 ppm), and serving temperatures (25 and 38C) were formulated. Panelists evaluated sensory heat intensity over a 3-min interval. Time-intensity parameters (maximum intensity-MAX, time to maximum intensity-TMAX, and rate of release-RATE) were evaluated. Overall, intensity scores increased as capsaicin concentration increased. The increase was related to carrier and fat level. Water samples (0.4, 0.8, and 1.3 ppm) were perceived as more intense than cheese or starch samples at the same capsaicin level. Generally, increasing the fat level resulted in lower intensity scores. Warming samples increased RATE, the only parameter affected by temperature. The training method was effective when water was the carrier. However, physical or chemical interactions that occur in simple food systems may influence perceived pungency. 相似文献

H. A. GLEASON'S 'INDIVIDUALISTIC CONCEPT' AND THEORY OF ANIMAL COMMUNITIES: A CONTINUING CONTROVERSY
A tradition of natural history and of the lore of early twentieth-century ecology was that organisms lived together and interacted to form natural entities or communities. Before there was a recognizable science of ecology, Mobius (1877) had provided a name ‘biocoenosis’ for such entities. This concept persisted in the early decades of ecological science; at an extreme it was maintained that the community had integrating capabilities and organization like those of an individual organism, hence the term organismic community. In the 1950s- 1970s an alternative individualist concept, derived from the ideas of H. A. Gleason (1939), gained credence which held that communities were largely a coincidence of individualistic species characteristics, continuously varying environments and different probabilities of a species arriving on a given site. During the same period, however, a body of population based theory of animal communities became dominant which perpetuated the idea of patterns in nature based on biotic interactions among species resulting in integrated communities. This theory introduced an extended terminology and mathematical models to explain the organization of species into groups of compatible species governed by rules. In the late 1970s the premises and methods of the theory came under attack and a vigorous debate ensued. The alternatives proposed were, at an extreme, null models of random aggregations of species or stochastic, individualistic aggregations of species, sensu Gleason. Extended research and debate ensued during the 1980s resulting in an explosion of studies of animal communities and a plethora of symposia and volumes of collected works concerning the nature of animal communities. The inherent complexity of communities and the traditional differences among animal ecologists about how they should be defined and delimited, at what scale of taxa, space and time to study them, and appropriate methods of study and analysis have resulted in extended and as yet inconclusive discussions. Recent differences and discussions are considered under five general categories, evolution and community theory, individualistic concept, community definition, questions from community ecology and empirical studies. Communities are seen by some ecologists as entities of coevolving species and, in any case, it is necessary to integrate evolutionary ideas with the varied concepts of community. The individualistic concept of community, as a relative latecomer to discussions of animal community, is sometimes misconstrued as holding that communities are random assemblages of organisms without biotic interactions among species. Nevertheless, it has increasingly been accepted as supported by studies of diverse taxa and habitats. However, many other ecologists continue to argue for integrated, biotically controlled and evolved communities. Among the major difficulties of addressing the problems of community are problems of definition and terminology. One commentator noted that community ecology may be unique in the sciences because there is no consensus definition of community. One consequence of the lack of consensus definition is evident in the varied and diffuse questions posed in studies of community. Some critics of community ecology fault it for posing unanswerable questions. Recent empirical studies include various assessments about community ranging from deterministic, integrated and organismic to individualistic with various suggestions for compromise. The early emphasis on birds in studies of animal communities has expanded to obviate the argument that any position is constrained by the taxon studied. Insects, in general, are more prone to give rise to interpretation of a nonintegrated community. Parasite community studies have given rise to some distinctive categories and terminology. However, consensus is not achieved either within or among taxonomic groups or habitat groups. The extreme heterogeneity and complexity of communities (and of ecologists) has produced extended discussions of how to approach such multidimensional complexity. These discussions often turn on polarized positions of reductionism and experiment versus holism. Proponents of reductionism asserted that natural communities cannot be understood or their structure and organization predicted until experimental communities, or models thereof, are understood. Holists insisted that the inherent complexity and variability of communities cannot be elucidated in simplified experimental communities or in models. A more recent trend has urged pluralism, or, at least, mutual respect and dialogue, which are sometimes lacking, between proponents of these divergent approaches to communities. Recent work perpetuates the original dichotomy between integrated organismic community concept and individualistic non-integrated concept. The hope for a rule-governed community has extended to metarules and a new theory of community as divided into core species and satellite species is called into question. The problems of distinguishing between determinism and chance effects in community organization continue and the lost or fading hope of a general theory of community is revived in a search for rules that govern their assembly. 相似文献
