In general, more of the biomass of the community is preserved than is its numerical abundance. Thus, the paleontologist, on the average, works with more of the community when biomass is used. Community characteristics such as taxon dominance and habitat proportions are at least as accurately derived from biomass as numerical abundance. The use of biomass is clearly more appropriate in describing energy flow and trophic proportions. Whenever possible, biomass should be used as a complement to numerical abundance in future paleoecologic reconstructions.  相似文献

The breeding biology of two island populations of the Northwestern Crow was studied in British Columbia over a period of five years. Both populations laid an average of four eggs per clutch, of which approximately 75% hatched. More young survived to fledge on Mandate than on Mitlenatch Island. The young from nests close (< 100 m) to the beach on Mitlenatch had a higher survival rate than those from further inland. The number of eggs lost or failing to hatch was lowest in clutches of four eggs. There was a non-significant trend for chick survival to be inversely related to clutch size. The net result was that clutches of five eggs produced no more young than did clutches of four eggs. It is suggested that the major limiting factor on clutch size is food availability but the decreased hatching success of any remaining eggs once hatching has started is also a contributing factor.  相似文献

Abstract. Chlorophyll fluorescence emission spectra and the kinetics of 685 mm fluorescence emission from wheat leaf tissue and thylakoids isolated from such tissue were examined as a function of excitation wavelength. A considerable enhancement of fluorescence emission above 700 nm relative to that at 685 nm was observed from leaf tissue when it was excited with 550 nm rather than 450 nm radiation. Such excitation wavelength dependent changes in the emission spectrum occurred over an excitation spectral range of 440–660 nm and appeared to be directly related to the total quantity of radiation absorbed at a given excitation wavelength. Experiments with isolated thylakoid preparations demonstrated that changes in the fluorescence emission spectrum of the leaf were attributable to the optical properties of the leaf and were not due to the intrinsic characteristies of the thylakoid photochemical apparatus. This was not the case for the observed excitation wavelength dependent changes in the 685 nm fluorescence induction curve obtained from leaf tissue infiltrated with DCMU. Excitation wavelength dependent changes in the ratio of the variable to maximal fluorescence emission and the shape of the variable fluorescence induction were observed for leaf tissue. Isolated thylakoid studies showed that such changes in the leaf fluorescence kinetics were representative of the way in which the photochemical apparatus in vivo was processing the absorbed radiation at the different excitation wavelengths. The results are considered in the context of the use of fluorescence emission characteristics of leaves as non-destructive probes of the photochemical apparatus in vivo.  相似文献

Abstract Growth-chamber cultivated Raphanus plants accumulate nitrate during their vegetative growth. After 25 days of growth at a constant supply to the roots of 1 mol m?3 (NO?3) in a balanced nutrient solution, the oldest leaves (eight-leaf stage) accumulated 2.5% NO?3-nitrogen (NO3-N) in their lamina, and almost 5% NO3-N in their petioles on a dry weight basis. This is equivalent to approximately 190 and 400 mol?3 m?3 concentration of NO?3 in the lamina and the petiole, respectively, as calculated on a total tissue water content basis. Measurements were made of root NO?3 uptake, NO?3 fluxes in the xylem, nitrate uptake by the mesophyll cells, and nitrate reduction as measured by an in vivo test. NO?3 uptake by roots and mesophyll cells was greater in the light than in the dark. The NO?3 concentration in the xylem fluid was constant with leaf age, but showed a distinct daily variation as a result of the independent fluxes of root uptake, transpiration and mesophyll uptake. NO?3 was reduced in the leaf at a higher rate in the light than in the dark. The reduction was inhibited at the high concentrations calculated to exist in the mesophyll vacuoles, but reduction continued at a low rate, even when there was no supply from the incubation medium. Sixty-four per cent of the NO?3 influx was turned into organic nitrogen, with the remaining NO?3 accumulating in both the light and the dark.  相似文献

Tracer amounts of atmospheric [13N]-Iabelled ammonia gas, wereabsorbed by leaves of Lupinus albus and Helianthus annuus inboth the light and the dark. Exogenous [13N]-ammonia was onlyabsorbed in the dark when the feeding occurred shortly aftera period of illumination and the tissue was not depleted ofits carbohydrate reserves (e.g. starch). Incorporation of the[13N]-ammonia appeared to occur via the leaf glutamine synthetase/glutamatesynthase (GS/GOGAT) cycle since 2.0 mol m–3 MSX, an inhibitorof the GS reduced uptake in both the light and dark. Photosyntheticincorporation of 11CO2 was not affected by this treatment Therate of movement of [13N]-assimilates in the petiole of attachedleaves of Helianthus and Lupinus was similar to that of the11Cl-photo assimilates. Export of both [13N] and [11C]-Iabelledassimilates from the leaf and movement in the petiole in boththe light and the dark was inhibited by source leaf anoxia (i.e.nitrogen gas). Translocation was re-established at the samerate when the feed leaf was exposed to gas containing more than2% O2 which permitted dark respiration to proceed. After aninitial feeding of either 11CO2 or [13N]-ammonia at ambient(21%) O2 exposure of the source leaf to 2% O2, or 50% O2 didnot alter the rates of translocation, indicating that changesin photosynthetic activity in the source leaf due to photorespiratoryactivity need not markedly alter, at least during the shortperiod, the loading and translocation of either [11C ] or [13N]-labelledleaf products. Myzus persicae transmitted soybean mosaic virus (SMV) most efficiently following 30 or 60 s acquisition probes on infected plants. There were no differences in susceptibility to SMV infection of soybean plants 1 to 12 wk old, but symptoms were more severe in plants inoculated when young than when old. Soybeans inoculated between developmental stages R3 and R6 only showed yellowish-brown blotching on one or more leaves. There were no observable differences in the time of appearance or type of symptoms shown by soybean seedlings inoculated either by sap or by aphids; infected plants became acquisition hosts for aphids 5–6 days after inoculation. There was no change in the efficiency with which M. persicae transmitted SMV from source plants up to 18 wk after inoculation. M. persicae transmitted SMV from leaves of field-grown soybeans when plants were inoculated at developmental stages V6, R2, and R3 and tested as sources 57–74 days after inoculation but not from plants inoculated at R5 and tested as sources 14 to 32 days after inoculation. M. persicae acquired SMV from soybean buds, flowers, green bean pods, and unifoliolate, trifoliolate, and senescent leaves. Middle-aged and deformed leaves were better sources of the virus than buds, unfolding and old symptomless leaves. The results are being incorporated into a computer model of SMV epidemiology.  相似文献

SUMMARY. We describe a model of zooplankton population dynamics that accounts for differences in mortality and physiology among animals of different ages or sizes. The model follows changes in numbers of individuals and changes in individual and egg biomass through time and it expresses mortality and net assimilation as functions of animal size.
We investigated the effect of egg size, age at first reproduction, and size at first reproduction on the per capita growth rates of populations growing under different conditions. In the absence of predation or when exposed to vertebrate predators that prefer large prey, populations achieve maximum growth rates when animals hatch from small eggs and reach maturity quickly at small sizes. Populations exposed to invertebrate predators that concentrate on small animals may increase r in two different ways. One way is for animals to increase juvenile survivorship by hatching from large eggs and by shortening the juvenile period. An alternative strategy is for animals to hatch from small eggs and to postpone maturity until they grow beyond the range of sizes available to their predators. Certain life history strategies maximize r if animals continue to grow after they reach maturity. By growing larger, non-primiparous females are able to hatch larger clutches and thereby increase the overall rate of population growth.
The model analysis shows how to assess age-dependent mortality rates from field data. The net rate of population increase and the age distribution of eggs together provide specific, quantitative information about mortality.  相似文献

  • 1 Members of the genus Hydropsyche, net-spinning caddisfly larvae, exhibit anomalies in the structure of their capture nets when collected from stream localities receiving heavy metal and toxic chemical wastes.
  • 2 The number of nets showing anomalies was positively correlated with the number of anomalies per net suggesting a graded response to the toxic wastes.
  • 3 Frequency of anomalies in a hydropsychid population increased the closer the nets were collected to a pollution source. Anomaly frequency was negatively correlated to total macroinvertebrate community structure as measured by the Shannon function. It is suggested that net anomaly frequeney by hydropsychids may be a useful tool in ecological monitoring.

SYNOPSIS. Oocysts of Eimeria ambystomae Saxe, 1955, Eimeria microcapi sp. n., and Eimeria urodela sp. n. are described from the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum , collected in Colorado and New Mexico. The oocysts of E. ambystomae are ellipsoid, 29.8 × 17.3 (24–38 × 15–25) μm, and the sporocysts lanceolate, 22.6 × 5.4 (16–27 × 5–7) μm. Oocyst and sporocyst residua are present, but not a polar granule and a micropyle. The oocysts and sporocysts of E. microcapi are ellipsoid, measuring respectively 38.1 × 25.3 (35-41 × 23-26) μm and 18.1 × 7.4 (16-19 × 6–8) μm. Oocyst and sporocyst residua, a micropyle (mean 3 μm), and a distinct micropyle cap (2 μm high) are present, but not a polar granule. The oocysts of E. urodela are spheroid, 22.2 (14-26) μm, and the sporocysts lanceolate, 16.3 × 5.8 (12-19 × 4-7) μm. Oocyst and sporocyst residua are present, but a polar granule and a micropyle are absent.  相似文献
