Background  

Pichia stipitis xylose reductase (Ps-XR) has been used to design Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains that are able to ferment xylose. One example is the industrial S. cerevisiae xylose-consuming strain TMB3400, which was constructed by expression of P. stipitis xylose reductase and xylitol dehydrogenase and overexpression of endogenous xylulose kinase in the industrial S. cerevisiae strain USM21.  相似文献

The zebrafish genome contains at least five msx homeobox genes, msxA, msxB, msxC, msxD, and the newly isolated msxE. Although these genes share structural features common to all Msx genes, phylogenetic analyses of protein sequences indicate that the msx genes from zebrafish are not orthologous to the Msx1 and Msx2 genes of mammals, birds, and amphibians. The zebrafish msxB and msxC are more closely related to each other and to the mouse Msx3. Similarly, although the combinatorial expression of the zebrafish msx genes in the embryonic dorsal neuroectoderm, visceral arches, fins, and sensory organs suggests functional similarities with the Msx genes of other vertebrates, differences in the expression patterns preclude precise assignment of orthological relationships. Distinct duplication events may have given rise to the msx genes of modern fish and other vertebrate lineages whereas many aspects of msx gene functions during embryonic development have been preserved.   相似文献

Background and aims

Legumes of the genus Lessertia have recently been introduced to Australia in an attempt to increase the range of forage species available in Australian farming systems capable of dealing with a changing climate. This study assessed the diversity and the nodulation ability of a collection of Lessertia root nodule bacteria isolated from different agro-climatic areas of the Eastern and Western Capes of South Africa.

Methods

The diversity and phylogeny of 43 strains was determined via the partial sequencing of the dnaK, 16srRNA and nodA genes. A glasshouse experiment was undertaken to evaluate symbiotic relationships between six Lessertia species and 17 rhizobia strains.

Results

The dnaK and 16S rRNA genes of the majority of the strains clustered with the genus Mesorhizobium. The position of the strains at the intra-genus level was incongruent between phylogenies with few exceptions. The nodA genes from Lessertia spp. formed a cluster on their own, separate from the previously known Mesorhizobium nodA sequences. Strains showed differences in their nodulation and nitrogen fixation patterns that could be correlated with nodA gene phylogeny. L. diffusa, L. herbacea and L. excisa nodulated with nearly all the strains examined while L. capitata, L. incana and L. pauciflora were more stringent.

Conclusion

Root nodule bacteria from Lessertia spp. were identified mainly as Mesorhizobium spp. Their nodA genes were unique and correlated with the nodulation and nitrogen fixation patterns of the strains. There were marked differences in promiscuity within Lessertia spp. and within strains of root nodule bacteria.  相似文献

A persistent and unusual bloom of Dinophysic acuta Ehrenbergin the RIas Bajas (Northwest Spain) from early July to mid-November1989, was associated with a diarshetic shellfish poisoning (DSP)outbreak that prevented mussel extraction in some areas fromearly August to mid-December. Integrated samples (0–5,5–10 and 10–15 m) were taken once or twice a weekat six stations. Maximum numbers of D.acuta (up to 2.3 104intheintegratedsamples)andpercentageofobserveddMdingcells(upto3l%),appearedin August, and formed a maximum in the thermodine. Cellnumbers were minimal when upwelling caused a breakdown of stratification.Fligh numbers of D.acuta (up to 1.8 104 cells 1–1 appearedagain when persistent south winds in late October caused a reversalof the circulation. Thus, the two cell maxima occurred duringtwo distinct hydrographic regimes, but in both cases at temperaturesof 15–17C. Numerous cells with one typical D.acuta valve,but the other valve reduced in size, were seen during the bloom,as well as Dinophysts dens Pavillard cells that might be a lifecycle stage of D.acuta. Other observations include double- walled,unwinged forms that are perhaps some kind of cyst, and a hypothetical‘fertilizing tube’ emerging from the larger cellof a D.acuta/D.dens couplet. It is suggested that the maximaduring stratification and during downwelling episodes couldcorrespond to periods with a predominance of in situ growthand physical accumulation, respectively, and that the exceptionalmeteorological conditions during 1989 provided the optimum scenariofor the unusual occurrence of D.acuta.  相似文献

BackgroundFamilies in high mortality settings need regular contact with high quality services, but existing population-based measurements of contacts do not reflect quality. To address this, in 2012, we designed linked household and frontline worker surveys for Gombe State, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Uttar Pradesh, India. Using reported frequency and content of contacts, we present a method for estimating the population level coverage of high quality contacts.ConclusionsMeasuring content of care to reflect the quality of contacts can reveal missed opportunities to deliver best possible health care.  相似文献

Genetic variation for six loci in 37 populations of Muscari comosum L. (Liliaeeae) is surveyed. One locus is monomorphic and identical in all the populations. The remaining loci are polymorphic. Although the GOT-1 and GOT-3 loci show a pronounced heterozygote deficit explained by selection acting upon these loci (or on genes linked to them), the remaining loci nearly conform to Hardy-Weinberg proportions. The overall pattern shows a low level of heterozygote deficit (FIS=0.08) explained by the mixed mating system. The organization of genetic variation shows a low level of interpopulation differentiation (FST or GST=0.04). At the same time, autocorrelation analysis shows no pattern of geographical variation. It is concluded that gene flow and selection interact to produce the overall pattern of genetic variation.  相似文献
