Chemical recognition cues are used to discriminate among species, con‐specifics, and potentially between patrilines in social insect colonies. There is an ongoing debate about the possible persistence of patriline cues despite evidence for the mixing of colony odors via a “gestalt” mechanism in social insects, because patriline recognition could lead to nepotism. We analyzed the variation in recognition cues (cuticular hydrocarbons) with different mating frequencies or queen numbers in 688 Formica exsecta ants from 76 colonies. We found no increase in the profile variance as genetic diversity increased, indicating that patriline effects were absent or possibly obscured by a gestalt mechanism. We then demonstrated that an isolated individual's profile changed considerably relative to their colony profile, before stabilizing after 5 days. We used these isolated individuals to eliminate the masking effects of the gestalt mechanism, and we detected a weak but statistically significant patriline effect in isolated adult workers and also in newly emerged callow workers. Thus, our evidence suggests that genetic variation in the cuticular hydrocarbon profile of F. exsecta ants (n‐alkanes and alkenes) resulted in differences among patrilines, but they were obscured in the colony environment, thereby avoiding costly nepotistic behaviors. 相似文献

Opportunistic fungal infections increase morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 patients monitored in intensive care units (ICU). As patients’ hospitalization days in the ICU and intubation period increase, opportunistic infections also increase, which prolongs hospital stay days and elevates costs. The study aimed to describe the profile of fungal infections and identify the risk factors associated with mortality in COVID-19 intensive care patients. The records of 627 patients hospitalized in ICU with the diagnosis of COVID-19 were investigated from electronic health records and hospitalization files. The demographic characteristics (age, gender), the number of ICU hospitalization days and mortality rates, APACHE II scores, accompanying diseases, antibiotic-steroid treatments taken during hospitalization, and microbiological results (blood, urine, tracheal aspirate samples) of the patients were recorded. Opportunistic fungal infection was detected in 32 patients (5.10%) of 627 patients monitored in ICU with a COVID-19 diagnosis. The average APACHE II score of the patients was 28 ± 6. While 25 of the patients (78.12%) died, seven (21.87%) were discharged from the ICU. Candida parapsilosis (43.7%) was the opportunistic fungal agent isolated from most blood samples taken from COVID-19 positive patients. The mortality rate of COVID-19 positive patients with candidemia was 80%. While two out of the three patients (66.6%) for whom fungi were grown from their tracheal aspirate died, one patient (33.3%) was transferred to the ward. Opportunistic fungal infections increase the mortality rate of COVID-19-positive patients. In addition to the risk factors that we cannot change, invasive procedures should be avoided, constant blood sugar regulation should be applied, and unnecessary antibiotics use should be avoided. 相似文献

Although there are several well-established hypotheses for the origins of postmating isolation during allopatric divergence,
there have been very few attempts to determine their relative importance in nature. We have developed an approach based on
knowledge of the differing evolutionary histories of populations within species that allows systematic comparison of the predictions
of these hypotheses. In previous work, we have applied this methodology to mating signal variation and premating reproductive
isolation between populations of the meadow grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus. Here we review the principles behind our approach and report a study measuring postmating isolation in the same set of populations.
The populations have known and differing evolutionary histories and relationships resulting from the colonization of northern
Europe following the last glaciation. We use a maximum-likelihood analysis to compare the observed pattern of postmating isolation
with the predictions of the hypotheses that isolation primarily evolves either as a result of gradual accumulation of mutations
in allopatry, or through processes associated with colonization, such as founder events. We also quantify the extent to which
degree of postmating isolation can be predicted by genetic distance. Our results suggest that although there is only a weak
correlation between genetic distance and postmating isolation, long periods of allopatry do lead to postmating isolation.
In contrast to the pattern of premating isolation described in our previous study, colonization does not seem to be associated
with increased postmating isolation.

Sexual selection has the potential to contribute to population divergence and speciation. Most studies of sexual selection in Drosophila have concentrated on a single signaling modality, usually either courtship song or cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), which can act as contact pheromones. We have examined the relationship between both signal types and reproductive success using F(1-3) offspring of wild-collected flies, raised in the lab. We used two populations of the Holarctic species Drosophila montana that represent different phylogeographic clades that have been separate for ca. 0.5 million years (MY), and differ to some extent in both traits. Here, we characterize the nature and identify the targets of sexual selection on song, CHCs, and both traits combined within the populations. Three measures of courtship outcome were used as fitness proxies. They were the probability of mating, mating latency, and the production of rejection song by females, and showed patterns of association with different traits that included both linear and quadratic selection. Courtship song predicted courtship outcome better than CHCs and the signal modalities acted in an additive rather than synergistic manner. Selection was generally consistent in direction and strength between the two populations and favored males that sang more vigorously. Sexual selection differed in the extent, strength, and nature on some of the traits between populations. However, the differences in the directionality of selection detected were not a good predictor of population differences. In addition, a character previously shown to be important for species recognition, interpulse interval, was found to be under sexual selection. Our results highlight the complexity of understanding the relationship between within-population sexual selection and population differences. Two parapatric subspecies of the grasshopper Chorthippus parallelusform a hybrid zone in the Pyrenees. Partial assortative mating between subspecies must result from differences in elements of the sequence of behaviors that leads to mating. It was already known that the subspecies differ in the structure of the acoustic mating signal produced by males and in the amount of song produced under laboratory conditions. Here we investigate whether any differences exist in male mating strategies in the field, concentrating on the prediction that male C. p. erythropussing less and compensate for this by active searching (males divide their time between singing and moving in search of females). Results of field observations show that the two subspecies do in fact allocate their time differently. C. p. erythropusmales spend almost twice as much time moving around the habitat as C. p. parallelusmales. Furthermore, C. p. parallelusmales divide their time into long bouts of continuous singing alternating with periods of movement. C. p. erythropusmales, on the other hand, sing in short bursts interspersed with movement. The possible reasons for this divergence in male mating behavior and its consequences are discussed. 相似文献

18S ribosomal RNA genes are the most widely used nuclear sequences for
phylogeny reconstruction at higher taxonomic levels in plants. However, due
to a conservative rate of evolution, 18S rDNA alone sometimes provides too
few phylogenetically informative characters to resolve relationships
adequately. Previous studies using partial sequences have suggested the
potential of 26S or large-subunit (LSU) rDNA for phylogeny retrieval at
taxonomic levels comparable to those investigated with 18S rDNA. Here we
explore the patterns of molecular evolution of entire 26S rDNA sequences
and their impact on phylogeny retrieval. We present a protocol for PCR
amplification and sequencing of entire (approximately 3.4 kb) 26S rDNA
sequences as single amplicons, as well as primers that can be used for
amplification and sequencing. These primers proved useful in angiosperms
and Gnetales and likely have broader applicability. With these protocols
and primers, entire 26S rDNA sequences were generated for a diverse array
of 15 seed plants, including basal eudicots, monocots, and higher eudicots,
plus two representatives of Gnetales. Comparisons of sequence dissimilarity
indicate that expansion segments (or divergence domains) evolve 6.4 to 10.2
times as fast as conserved core regions of 26S rDNA sequences in plants.
Additional comparisons indicate that 26S rDNA evolves 1.6 to 2.2 times as
fast as and provides 3.3 times as many phylogenetically informative
characters as 18S rDNA; compared to the chloroplast gene rbcL, 26S rDNA
evolves at 0.44 to 1.0 times its rate and provides 2.0 times as many
phylogenetically informative characters. Expansion segment sequences
analyzed here evolve 1.2 to 3.0 times faster than rbcL, providing 1.5 times
the number of informative characters. Plant expansion segments have a
pattern of evolution distinct from that found in animals, exhibiting less
cryptic sequence simplicity, a lower frequency of insertion and deletion,
and greater phylogenetic potential.

1. The uptakes of Pi and serine by whole cells of mutant strains of Escherichia coli K12, grown under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, were studied. 2. Uptake by aerobic cells was low in a ubiquinone-less mutant but normal in two mutant strains unable to couple phosphorylation to electron transport. 3. One of these uncoupled strains, carrying the unc-405 allele, does not form a membrane-bound Mg2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase aggregate, and it is concluded that the Mg2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase does not serve a structural role in the aerobic active transport of Pi or serine. 4. The other uncoupled strain, in which aerobic uptake is unaffected, carries a mutation in the uncB gene, thus distinguishing this gene from the etc gene, previously shown to be concerned with the coupling of electron transport to active transport. 5. The uptakes of Pi and serine by anaerobic cells were normal in the ubiquinone-less mutant, but defective in both the uncoupled strains. 6. The uptake of Pi and serine by anaerobic cells of the uncB mutant could be increased by the addition of fumarate to the uptake medium. The unc-405 mutant, however, required the addition of fumarate for growth and for uptake. 7. The uncB mutant, unlike the unc-405 mutant, is able to grow anaerobically in a minimal medium with glucose as sole source of carbon. Similarly a strain carrying a mutation in the frd gene, which is the structural gene for the enzyme fumarate reductase, is able to grow anaerobically in a glucose-minimal medium. However, a mutant strain carrying mutations in both the uncB and frd genes resembles the unc-405 mutant in not being able to grow under these conditions. 相似文献

1. We have isolated a mutant of Escherichia coli K12 (strain AN295) that forms de-repressed amounts of Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase. 2. The Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated triphosphatase activity was separated from membrane preparations from strain AN295 by extraction with 5mm-Tris–HCl buffer containing EDTA and dithiothreitol, resulting in a loss of the ATP-dependent transhydrogenase activity. The non-energy-linked transhydrogenase activity remained in the membrane residue. 3. The solubilized Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase activity from strain AN295 was partially purified by repeated gel filtration. The addition of the purified Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase to the membrane residue from strain AN295 reactivated the ATP-dependent transhydrogenase activity. 4. Strain AN296, lacking Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase activity, was derived by transducing the mutant allele, uncA401, into strain AN295. The ATP-dependent transhydrogenase activity was lost but the non-energy linked transhydrogenase was retained. 5. The ATP-dependent transhydrogenase activity in membrane preparations from strain AN296 (uncA−) could not be re-activated by the purified Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase from strain AN295. However, after extraction by 5mm-Tris–HCl buffer containing EDTA and dithiothreitol, the ATP-dependent transhydrogenase activity could be re-activated by the addition of the purified Mg2+,Ca2+-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase from strain AN295 to the membrane residue from strain AN296 (uncA−). 相似文献

1. Two mutants of Escherichia coli K 12 were isolated which, although able to grow on glucose, are unable to grow with succinate or d-lactate as the sole source of carbon. 2. Genetic mapping of these mutants showed that they both contain a mutation in a gene (designated uncA) mapping at about minute 73.5 on the E. coli chromosome. 3. The uncA(-) alleles were transferred by bacteriophage-mediated transduction into another strain of E. coli and the transductants compared with the parent strain to determine the nature of the biochemical lesion in the mutants. 4. The mutants gave low aerobic growth yields when grown on limiting concentrations of glucose, but oxidase activities in membranes from both the mutants and the normal strain were similar. 5. Measurement of P/O ratios with d-lactate as substrate indicated that a mutation in the uncA gene causes uncoupling of phosphorylation associated with electron transport. 6. Determination of the Mg(2+),Ca(2+)-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase activities in the mutant and normal strains indicated that the uncA gene is probably the structural gene for Mg(2+),Ca(2+)-stimulated adenosine triphosphatase. 7.
