Why Life Histories Evolve Differently in the Sea   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
Marine life histories differ from terrestrial life historiesbecause seawater is denser and more viscous than air, becausedesiccation is not a problem for organisms in water, and becausefood is abundant in suspension and solution. (1) Mating andcompetition for paternity in the sea often differs. Female gametesare often spawned freely. Passively dispersed spermatophorescould in some cases provide single paternity to an entire clutchof offspring. Penises of sessile animals reach far for copulation.There are no pollinators. (2) In many clades of benthic marineanimals, greater dispersal of offspring is associated with largeadult size, and greater parental care of offspring and reducedplanktonic larval periods are associated with small adult size.(3) Many benthic marine animals are colonies with modular construction,and these also commonly brood embryos and have short-lived larvae,in contrast to related solitary forms. (4) Unlike dispersalof terrestrial animals, larval dispersal of marine animals isoften obligate with sexual reproduction and often includes aprecompetent period during which larvae cannot settle at goodsites. Unlike terrestrial seeds, marine larvae have no clearadaptations for dispersal, often grow during dispersal, andoften leave bad sites. Feeding planktonic larvae are commonamong marine animals and rare among other aquatic animals, perhapsbecause of persistent aquatic routes between habitable sitesfor marine animals. Peculiarities in marine life histories mayinfluence many aspects of evolution in the sea. Closely relatedsedentary marine animals can differ greatly in larval dispersalwith consequences for recruitment to populations, genetic exchangebetween benthic populations, adaptation to local conditions,sex allocation, interaction with kin, speciation, and extinction.  相似文献

Fluctuations in the level and chemistry during its history have played a major part in shaping the floral and faunal communities of the Aral Sea. Of the eleven species of Ostracoda (Crustacea) known to have been living in the Aral Sea in 1960, only one survives today due to the anthropogenically induced salinity increase of the past three decades. The origins of a mixed fresh- and brackish-water ostracod fauna are discussed, and it is concluded that some of the major faunal elements must have reached the Aral Sea Basin during a past high water level phase when connection existed with the Caspian Sea. The taxonomic position of key taxa is clarified, and the major elements of the pre-1960 Aral Sea ostracod fauna are illustrated from Holocene sequences. 1. The epiphytic flora of a characean meadow in Lake Coleridge, a deep, oligotrophic lake on the South Island of New Zealand, was dominated by diatoms, particularly Eunotia pectinalis and Achnanthes minutissima. The meadows occupied a depth range from 5 to 30 m. Adnate taxa predominated at all depths below 5 m, while increased taxonomic diversity at 5 m resulted from an increased abundance of erect taxa, including chlorophytes and stalked diatoms. 2. Seasonal changes in epiphyte biomass were followed using artificial substrata and by estimating epiphyte chlorophyll a concentration on host plants. The latter required development of a novel technique utilizing the consistent relationship between fucoxanthin and chlorophyll a concentrations in the epiphyton. Epiphyte chlorophyll a on host plants varied with depth and host species between 0.1 and 0.3 mg g–1 dry weight. Maximum epiphyte biomass was at 10–15 m depth. At depths of 15 m and less, epiphyte chlorophyll a reached a maximum of ≈ 200–300 mg m–2 in mid-summer, while at greater depths maximum biomass was less and coincided with a period of clear water in spring. 3. Photosynthetic carbon fixation was estimated from photosynthesis–radiation curves and estimates of radiation flux at sampling depths. At depths greater than 10 m, variability of the vertical extinction coefficient of lake water rather than seasonal fluctuations in incident radiation were responsible for determining the temporal pattern of production. Chlorophyll a-specific photosynthesis was estimated to peak in summer at 5 m (8 mg mg–1 day–1), and in spring at all other depths. 4. Annual epiphyte production was estimated as 27 g C m–2 year–1 at 5 m depth, falling to 15 g C m–2 year–1 at 15 m and 1 g C m–2 year–1 at 30 m. Areal biomass changes tended to be temporally but not quantitatively coupled to estimated in situ photosynthesis, and we hypothesize that epiphyte biomass may have been controlled by grazing gastropod snails.  相似文献

The diets of pochard (Aythya ferina), scaup (A. marila) and goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) overwintering on Lough Neagh are dominated by chironomid larvae, while molluscs are more important in that of tufted duck (A. fuligula). 2. Inshore areas of Lough Neagh offer poor feeding conditions for these diving ducks because chironomid larvae and molluscs are of small individual body size or low abundance. These factors lead to all four ducks foraging at least in part at depths greater than those usually exploited. 3. Due to their common consumption of molluscs, the diet of tufted duck shows a higher overlap with that of an introduced roach (Rutilus rutilus) population than with any other duck or fish species. 4. The feeding ecology of tufted duck and roach in Lough Neagh may form an example of distant competition and be at least partly responsible for recent fluctuations in the numbers of tufted duck.  相似文献

The formation of mouse coat color is a relatively complex developmental process that is affected by a large number of mutations, both naturally occurring and induced. The cloning of the genes in which these mutations occur and the elucidation of the mechanisms by which these mutations disrupt the normal pigmentation pattern is leading to an understanding of the way interactions between gene products lead to a final phenotype.  相似文献

  • 1 The influence of fluctuating asymmetry on lifetime mating success of males of the damselfly Coenagrion puella (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) was investigated. Fluctuating asymmetry was measured as the difference in length of left and right fore and hind wings.
  • 2 Males with more symmetrical wings enjoyed higher lifetime mating success.
  • 3 Larger males, in contrast to a previous study of this species, also had higher mating success. This may be attributed to differences in the weather conditions prevailing at the time of the studies.

The effect of consumption of bitter taste substances (caffeine and beer) to bitter taste sensitivity was examined by 19 healthy adults. For individual taste sensitivity, detection thresholds were used on 6 bitter substances (caffeine, iso-alpha-acids: beer bittering agents, quinine sulfate, L-tryptophan, L-phenylalanine and glycyl-L-phenylalanyl-L-phenylalanine) and 3 non-bitter substances (L-aspartic acid, aspartame and NaCl). Nonusers of caffeine had significantly higher sensitivity (lower threshold) for caffeine compared to moderate and heavy users. Slight consumers of beer had significantly higher sensitivity for iso-alpha-acids relative to heavy users of beer, Iso-alpha-acids were not detected in saliva in acute dosing test by using 6 subjects. The correlations between thresholds of 6 bitter substances were calculated. Significant correlations (p < 0.01) were noted in 2 cases between caffeine and quinine, and iso-alpha-acids and L-trypothan. These data suggest the significant relation between individual bitter taste sensitivity and the consumption of caffeine and beer (iso-alpha-acids).  相似文献

The Light mutation (Blt) is a dominant allele of the b-locus on mouse chromosome 4 which causes progressive dilution of coat colour. Melanocytes within the hair follicles of mutant mice develop normally but later degenerate, due to the accumulation of a toxic product, so that the hair becomes lighter with age. Previous studies on W-locus spotting mutants, from which melanocytes are absent, have shown that melanocytes in the stria vascularis of the inner ear are essential for the development and/or maintenance of the endocochlear potential (EP) which is normally around 100 mV. In this study, physiological recordings from the ears of Light mutants were correlated with strial ultrastructure. EPs recorded from all b/b controls and young homozygous and heterozygous mutants (20–22 days old) were normal (77 to 113 mV), but were reduced (19 to 59 mV) in about 30% of ears from older mutants (Blt/Blt and Blt/b). Strial function therefore appears to develop normally but later degenerates in some mutants. This suggests that strial melanocytes are affected by the Light allele and that the continued presence of melanocytes is necessary for strial function. There was no obvious association between the recorded EP value and the ultrastructural appearance of the stria. No structural abnormalities of the stria were noted in control or mutant mice aged 20 days to 4 months including those which had a reduced EP. Strial atrophy was common in old controls and mutants (1–2 years), and appeared to be an age-related process rather than an effect of the Light mutation. Similarly, pigment build-up was common in all strial cells of old mice. However, the accumulations of lipofuscin-like pigment were much larger and more abundant in aged brown non-agouti mice than those observed in old agouti mice, which suggests that this age-related process also has a genetic component.  相似文献

Three trace fossil associations have been identified from facies interpreted as low wave energy upper, middle and lower shoreface deposits, transitional shoreface/shelf deposits and open epicontinental shelf deposits. These were developed in pre-regressive, regressive and transgressive phases associated with eustatic sea level changes caused by the upper Ordovician glaciation. The three associations are the Skolithos-Diplocraterion association, the Diplichnites-Phycodes association and the Thalassinoides association. The Skolithos-Diplocraterion association inhabited upper, middle and lower shoreface environments, the Diplichnites-Phycodes association a lowermost shoreface environment and the Thalassinoides association inhabited offshore epicontinental shelf environmcnts. The Skolithos-Diplocraferion and Diplichnites-Phycodes associations bear strong affinities with previously described Skolithos ichnofacies assemblages (indicating shoreline environments) and the Cruziana ichnofacies forms (indicating shallow water environments down to wave base) respectively. The Thalassinoides assemblage, however, closely compares with assemblages described from Mesozoic epicontinental shelf sequences. Trace fossil diversity achieves a maximum in the lowermost shoreface environment and reduces in deeper water and shallower water environments. This accords with diversity patterns identified in analogous Jurassic epicontinental palaeonvironments. The stratigraphic distribution of some trace fossil association boundaries accords with those of contemporary body fossil associations.
