We compare predictions from a proposed model for the origin of the genetic code (J. Theor. Biol (1993) 164, 291–305) with existing information on the base content of codons and abundance of amino acid in different organisms. A comparison is also made between the three groups of amino acids suggested by the model and the two classes of aminoacetyl-tRNA synthetases. The growing human population and the increase in per capita food consumption are driving agriculture expansion and affecting natural ecosystems around the world. To balance increasing agriculture production and nature conservation, we must assess the efficiency of land‐use strategies. Soybean production, mainly exported to China and Europe, has become the major driver of deforestation in dry forest/savanna ecosystems of South America. In this article we compared land cover patterns (based on satellite imagery) and land‐use and human population trends (based on government statistics) in regions with two contrasting development pathways in the Chaco dry forests of northern Argentina, since the early 1970s. The area (ca. 13 million hectares) includes one of the largest continuous patches of tropical dry forests and has experienced rapid land‐use change. In the region where land use has been driven by government‐sponsored colonization programs, the expansion of extensive grazing has led to a growing rural population, low food production, and widespread environmental degradation. In contrast, in the region dominated by market‐driven soybean expansion, the rural population has decreased, food production is between 300% and 800% greater, and low‐density extensive cattle production has declined over extensive remaining forested areas, resulting in a land‐use trend that appears to better balance food production and nature conservation.  相似文献

The pollen morphology of Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) section Choretropsis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The pollen grain morphology of the eight South American species of the genus Phyllanthus , subgenus Phyllanthus , section Choretropsis , endemic to Brazil, was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The high homogeneity in pollen shape, as well as aperture number and configuration, allowed the definition of a basic pollen type for this section, viz. prolate spheroidal or subprolate, zonocolporate with 4–5 invaginated colpi, sexine reticulate. Two subtypes have been observed, based on pollen grain apertures and exine sculpture. The first subtype is characterized by straight and narrow colpi provided with costae, lalongate endoapertures and a reticulum of rectilineous muri as in P. choretroides and P. spartioides . The second subtype has wider colpi without costae, circular endoapertures and a reticulum with curvilineous muri as in P. flagelliformis , P. goianensis and P. scoparius , or curvilineous-rectilineous muri as in P. angustissimus , P. gladiatus and P. klotzschianus . It was demonstrated that the pollen shape and the number of colpi varied within and between some of the species. The results suggest that pollen grain morphology, in association with plant architecture and the presence of phylloclades, constitute additional evidence to delimit the species of the section Choretropsis and to further understand their evolutionary origin within the genus Phyllanthus.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 243–250.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A new species of suctorian in the genus Periacineta, epibiotic on aquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Nepomorpha), is described on the basis of morphological characteristics of the cell body, lorica, tentacular placement, and stalk, and its 18S rRNA partial sequence gene. Periacineta mexicana n. sp. is a loricate suctorian with elongate body and rounded apical region; tentacles are distributed randomly over apical region and not grouped into fascicles. Macronucleus in adult is elongate and located centrally. The suctorian usually forms closely aggregated pseudocolonies. We provide morphological data based on optical and scanning electron microscopy. A comparison with similar congeners, and emended diagnosis of the genus Periacineta also are provided. The ciliates were found attached to the first two pairs of legs of Mexican notonectids Buenoa pallens and Buenoa spp. (backswimmers).  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Several batrachoidids have been known to produce sounds associated with courtship and agonistic interactions, and their repertoires have been studied acoustically and behaviourally. In contrast, sound production of the Lusitanian toadfish Halobatrachus didactylus, although often noted, has not been acoustically studied.

This sedentary predator of Northeastern Atlantic coastal waters is usually found in sandy and muddy substrates, under rocks or crevices. Sound recordings were made in Ria Formosa, a lagoon complex in southern Portugal. The sound producing apparatus was studied in adult individuals of both sexes captured by local fishermen.

It is shown that this species produces acoustic emissions similar to other batrachoidids. It produces a long, rhythmical, tonal sound, often in choruses, which is comparable to the boatwhistle or hum signals of Opsanus and Porichthys, and a complex of signals that were classified as grunts, croaks, double croaks and mixed calls (‘grunt-croak’). As in other toadfishes, H. didactylus presents sonic muscles connected to a bi-lobed swimbladder. Asynchronous contractions of the sonic muscles were detected when massaging the ventral surface of the fish.  相似文献

Biology of the aphid Therioaphis maculata was studied on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), including four resistant (Mesa-Sirsa, CUF101, Baker and Lahontan) and two susceptible (ARC and Caliverde) alfalfa cultivars, and one of the most cropped Brazilian cultivars, Crioula. Under controlled conditions, antibiosis (i.e., reduced longevity, fecundity and increased mortality of the aphid) was observed mainly on the resistant alfalfa cultivars, except on Lahontan. Crioula seemed to be tolerant to aphids. Present data support geographic limitation usage of cultivars, and we suggest Baker and Mesa-Sirsa as sources of antibiosis, and provide biological information of a tropical T. maculata biotype on alfalfa.  相似文献

Confirming a previous analysis by Lang (1974), it is concludedthat in tree trunks, phloem turgor and turgor gradients maybe estimated from osmotic pressure and osmotic-pressure gradients,respectively. The present analysis is an improvement becauseit is based on observed osmotic-pressure gradients rather thansupposed turgor gradients, and allowance is made for sucroseunloading and gradients of external water potential. It is concludedthat the rate of sucrose unloading in tree trunks must be lessthan 50 nmol m–2 S m–1. In small plants, higherrates of unloading (100 nmol m m–2 S m–1) and steeperconcentration gradients will lead to larger errors, but turgorpressures can still be estimated with acceptable accuracy. Oneshould be more cautious when considering turgor gradients insmall plants, although it seems likely that reasonable estimateswill still be obtained. Assuming plasmodesmatal transport throughan unconstricted cytoplasmic annulus, it is concluded that thesieve elements and their associated cells will sustain verysimilar turgor and osmotic pressures. Convection and diffusioncan both contribute significantly to plasmodesmatal sucroseunloading. Similarly, the plasmodesmatal volume flux will reflecta combination of pressure flow and osmosis. Water fluxes acrossthe sieve element plasmalemma and through the plasmodesmatacan be in opposite directions. The theory described in Part I of this series is applied hereto the loading of water and sucrose into the sieve-element-companion-cell(se-cc) complexes of minor veins. It is concluded that symplasticphloem loading cannot account for large increases in osmoticpressure from mesophyll to se-cc complex or the dilution ofsieve tube sap which is evident in leaves. By contrast, loadingfrom the free space into a symplastically isolated se-cc complexcan account for both these observations. Within the se-cc complex,sucrose and water will be transported from the companion cellsto the sieve elements by a pressure-driven flow of solutionthrough the cytoplasmic annuli of plasmodesmata. The associatedchanges in turgor and osmotic pressure are small, and so these-cc complex can be regarded as a single compartment with respectto water potential. The assumption that this compartment isat water flux equilibrium will lead to significant overestimatesof turgor gradients. The modern Sirenia have been little studied because of their present rarity and the difficulty of observing fully aquatic animals even though so large. These mammals are the only large aquatic herbivores. One of the three modern forms, Steller's seacow, is recently extinct; the dugong of the tropical Indo-Pacific region is now rare almost everywhere apart from some of the northern waters of Australia, while the manatee of the two sides of the tropical Atlantic is both marine and riverine but has become very scarce.
The two authors have, over 12 years, endeavoured by means of personal visits to the Guianas, Australia, Torres Strait, Ceylon and elsewhere, and by copious correspondence, to gather material so as to summarize the present distribution and status of the Sirenia. This information is presented in a setting of conservation and eventual rational use as meat animals and in other ways. There is also reference to the history and manner of exploitation which has brought the Sirenia to their present lowly state. The main residual stock is that in northernmost Australian waters, and there numbers may now indeed begin again to increase.  相似文献
