An experiment was carried out in open-top chambers located in eastern Spain. One-yr-old Pinus halepensis Mill. seedlings were exposed during three consecutive summers to the following ozone (O3) treatments: charcoal-filtered air (CFA), non-filtered air (NFA) or non-filtered air plus 40 nl l−1 O3, 9 h d−1, 5 d wk−1 (NFA+40). Seasonal variations in Aleppo pine performance were observed since reductions in chlorophyll and cellular peroxidase levels associated with increases in superoxide dismutase activity, were recorded during the summer. Similarly, a reduction in epoxidation state was found at midday during the summer, derived from an activation of the xanthophyll cycle associated to an increment in radiation and temperature levels.
The first O3-induced effects were recorded in previous-year needles (1991) during the first summer exposure as an increase in extracellular and total peroxidase activities and in zeaxanthin levels in the NFA+40 treatment along with a trend to a higher SOD activity in this treatment. A carry-over effect was detected since a lower winter recovery of chlorophyll levels was found in the NFA+40 seedlings along with a reduction of xanthophyll levels. A reduction in chlorophyll levels was observed in the previous-year needles (1992) from the NFA+40 treatment at the end of the second fumigation period. Realistic ozone exposures induced alterations in plant antioxidative systems and plant pigments as shown in this paper. These observations together with the reductions in stomatal conductance and net photosynthesis recorded in the same experiment, indicate that Aleppo pine is a species sensitive to ozone.  相似文献

The glutathione S-transferases appear to form part of a protective mechanism against the development of cancer where environmental chemical carcinogens are involved. In humans one member of the mu class gene family (GSTM1) has been shown to be polymorphic and is only expressed in ~50% of individuals. Previous studies have shown a possible link between the null phenotype and susceptibility to cancer but have been equivocal regarding stomach cancer. To evaluate any association in Portuguese gastric cancer individuals with GSTM1 variability, we performed GST M 1 polymorphism by PCR amplification in 148 gastric cancer patients and in 84 healthy control individuals. We found no statistical differences between the gastric cancer and control populations (wild type phenotype: 52%, 48%; null phenotype: 48%, 52%, respectively). A subset analysis into site of tumour also revealed no significant differences between the groups, although we found a slight increase of the wild type phenotype in the samples of the antrum compared with the control population (57% vs 48%, respectively; 2= 1.18; p 0.28) and a slight increase of the null phenotype in the signet ring cells/mucocellular group (2= 1.05; p 0.3). However, in both cases it did not reach statistical significance. A subset analysis of the histological groups following the WHO criteria revealed a statistically significant difference (2= 3.704; p 0.05) between the moderately differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma and the presence of the wild type phenotype. These results do not support the hypothesis that the GSTM1 null phenotype predisposes to gastric cancer in the Portuguese population and the moderately differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma seems to be associated with the presence of the G STM 1 wild type phenotype.  相似文献

Abstract.  The hydrogen cyanide-based interaction of a strongly cyanogenic plant, Passiflora capsularis , and larvae of two insect herbivores, a generalist ( Spodoptera frugiperda ) and a specialist ( Heliconius erato ), is examined in terms of the combined kinetics of the feeding process and the simultaneous hydrogen cyanide (HCN) liberation, as compared with the natural kinetics of hydrogen cyanide evolution by plant-leaf tissue. There are marked differences in acceptance of P. capsularis by third-instar larvae of specialist and generalist species. The former, H. erato , display a parsimonious ingestion rate of 0.74 ± 0.15 mg (fresh weight) min−1 comprising 18% active feeding time, whereas S. frugiperda larvae show a more erratic and restrained feeding involving 4% of the time at 0.45 ± 0.14 mg min−1. These S. frugiperda larvae ingest 124.4 ± 8.3 mg (fw) of the non-cyanogeneic Spinacia oleracea leaves in 24 h compared with only 74.7 ± 20.1 mg of P. capsularis in the same period. The total hydrogen cyanide released naturally from wild specimens of P. capsularis plants is in the range 326–3901 μg g−1. Hydrogen cyanide evolution from macerated P. capsularis leaves takes place along a hyperbolic function with time and initial velocities of cyanide evolution are a linear function of total hydrogen cyanide. When feeding on P. capsularis leaves, H. erato releases only a minor fraction relative to total hydrogen cyanide (0.09%) and to the anticipated cyanide from the initial velocity (7%). By contrast, S. frugiperda evokes 5.8-fold more than the anticipated hydrogen cyanide release from the plant. The findings are interpreted as diverging strategies by generalist and specialist insects in the utilization of hydrogen cyanide in cyanogenic plants.  相似文献

Data are presented on the lifetime prevalence, projected lifetime risk, and age-of-onset distributions of mental disorders in the World Health Organization (WHO)''s World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys. Face-to-face community surveys were conducted in seventeen countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. The combined numbers of respondents were 85,052. Lifetime prevalence, projected lifetime risk, and age of onset of DSM-IV disorders were assessed with the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), a fully-structured lay administered diagnostic interview. Survival analysis was used to estimate lifetime risk. Median and inter-quartile range (IQR) of age of onset is very early for some anxiety disorders (7-14, IQR: 8-11) and impulse control disorders (7-15, IQR: 11-12). The age-of-onset distribution is later for mood disorders (29-43, IQR: 35-40), other anxiety disorders (24-50, IQR: 31-41), and substance use disorders (18-29, IQR: 21-26). Median and IQR lifetime prevalence estimates are: anxiety disorders 4.8-31.0% (IQR: 9.9-16.7%), mood disorders 3.3-21.4% (IQR: 9.8-15.8%), impulse control disorders 0.3-25.0% (IQR: 3.1-5.7%), substance use disorders 1.3-15.0% (IQR: 4.8-9.6%), and any disorder 12.0-47.4% (IQR: 18.1-36.1%). Projected lifetime risk is proportionally between 17% and 69% higher than estimated lifetime prevalence (IQR: 28-44%), with the highest ratios in countries exposed to sectarian violence (Israel, Nigeria, and South Africa), and a general tendency for projected risk to be highest in recent cohorts in all countries. These results document clearly that mental disorders are commonly occurring. As many mental disorders begin in childhood or adolescents, interventions aimed at early detection and treatment might help reduce the persistence or severity of primary disorders and prevent the subsequent onset of secondary disorders.  相似文献

1. Excretion of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a direct and potentially important role for aquatic consumers in nutrient cycling that has recently garnered increased attention. The ecosystem‐level significance of excreted nutrients depends on a suite of abiotic and biotic factors, however, and few studies have coupled measurements of excretion with consideration of its likely importance for whole‐system nutrient fluxes. 2. We measured rates and ratios of N and P excretion by shrimps (Xiphocaris elongata and Atya spp.) in two tropical streams that differed strongly in shrimp biomass because a waterfall excluded predatory fish from one site. We also made measurements of shrimp and basal resource carbon (C), N and P content and estimated shrimp densities and ecosystem‐level N and P excretion and uptake. Finally, we used a 3‐year record of discharge and NH4‐N concentration in the high‐biomass stream to estimate temporal variation in the distance required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool. 3. Per cent C, N, and P body content of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. Only per cent P body content showed significant negative relationships with body mass. C:N of Atya increased significantly with body mass and was higher than that of Xiphocaris. N : P of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. 4. Excretion rates ranged from 0.16–3.80 μmol NH4‐N shrimp?1 h?1, 0.23–5.76 μmol total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) shrimp?1 h?1 and 0.002–0.186 μmol total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) shrimp?1 h?1. Body size was generally a strong predictor of excretion rates in both taxa, differing between Xiphocaris and Atya for TDP but not NH4‐N and TDN. Excretion rates showed statistically significant but weak relationships with body content stoichiometry. 5. Large between‐stream differences in shrimp biomass drove differences in total excretion by the two shrimp communities (22.3 versus 0.20 μmol NH4‐N m?2 h?1, 37.5 versus 0.26 μmol TDN m?2 h?1 and 1.1 versus 0.015 μmol TDP m?2 h?1), equivalent to 21% and 0.5% of NH4‐N uptake and 5% and <0.1% of P uptake measured in the high‐ and low‐biomass stream, respectively. Distances required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool varied more than a hundredfold over the 3‐year record in the high‐shrimp stream, driven by variability in discharge and NH4‐N concentration. 6. Our results underscore the importance of both biotic and abiotic factors in controlling consumer excretion and its significance for nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Differences in community‐level excretion rates were related to spatial patterns in shrimp biomass dictated by geomorphology and the presence of predators. Abiotic factors also had important effects through temporal patterns in discharge and nutrient concentrations. Future excretion studies that focus on nutrient cycling should consider both biotic and abiotic factors in assessing the significance of consumer excretion in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

We compare predictions from a proposed model for the origin of the genetic code (J. Theor. Biol (1993) 164, 291–305) with existing information on the base content of codons and abundance of amino acid in different organisms. A comparison is also made between the three groups of amino acids suggested by the model and the two classes of aminoacetyl-tRNA synthetases. The pollen grain morphology of the eight South American species of the genus Phyllanthus , subgenus Phyllanthus , section Choretropsis , endemic to Brazil, was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The high homogeneity in pollen shape, as well as aperture number and configuration, allowed the definition of a basic pollen type for this section, viz. prolate spheroidal or subprolate, zonocolporate with 4–5 invaginated colpi, sexine reticulate. Two subtypes have been observed, based on pollen grain apertures and exine sculpture. The first subtype is characterized by straight and narrow colpi provided with costae, lalongate endoapertures and a reticulum of rectilineous muri as in P. choretroides and P. spartioides . The second subtype has wider colpi without costae, circular endoapertures and a reticulum with curvilineous muri as in P. flagelliformis , P. goianensis and P. scoparius , or curvilineous-rectilineous muri as in P. angustissimus , P. gladiatus and P. klotzschianus . It was demonstrated that the pollen shape and the number of colpi varied within and between some of the species. The results suggest that pollen grain morphology, in association with plant architecture and the presence of phylloclades, constitute additional evidence to delimit the species of the section Choretropsis and to further understand their evolutionary origin within the genus Phyllanthus.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 243–250.  相似文献

The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis alters host plant physiology under drought stress, but no information is available on whether or not the AM affects respond to drought locally or systemically. A split‐root system was used to obtain AM plants with total or only half root system colonized as well as to induce physiological drought affecting the whole plant or non‐physiological drought affecting only the half root system. We analysed the local and/or systemic nature of the AM effects on accumulation of osmoregulatory compounds and aquaporins and on antioxidant systems. Maize plants accumulated proline both, locally in roots affected by drought and systemically when the drought affected the whole root system, being the last effect ampler in AM plants. PIPs (plasma membrane intrinsic proteins) aquaporins were also differently regulated by drought in AM and non‐AM root compartments. When the drought affected only the AM root compartment, the rise of lipid peroxidation was restricted to such compartment. On the contrary, when the drought affected the non‐AM root fraction, the rise of lipid peroxidation was similar in both root compartments. Thus, the benefits of the AM symbiosis not only rely in a lower oxidative stress in the host plant, but it also restricts locally such oxidative stress.  相似文献
