Shell colour polymorphism was examined in a population of the polyplacophoran Ischnochiton striolatus (Gray, 1828) living on intertidal rocks in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Nine shell colours were identified: green (most common), grey, pink, cream, brown, orange, white, black and purple. The species habitat was also examined using three rock characteristics: volume; turnover frequency, caused by hydrodynamic disturbance; and chromatic composition. Chitons were most frequently encountered on the undersides of rocks of intermediate volume which experienced medium-intensity hydrodynamic disturbance, and which harboured a chromatically rich biotic community. These findings were in agreement with the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis. As chitons depend on the biotic community on rocks for food and shelter, a greater variety of colours could increase the chances of camouflage of the morphs against the background, favouring crypsis. It is likely that the frequency at which intermediate-volume rocks are overturned − thus exposing the chitons on them to light − would be sufficient for visual predators to act as selective agents.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 543–548.  相似文献

Well-documented changes in species abundances and distributions coinciding with global warming have been increasing during recent years. A trend of raising sea-surface temperature has also been observed along the Portuguese coast which could affect intertidal species' ranges. The present study aimed at evaluating the direction and intensity of distribution changes of macroalgae in the area. The last 50-year trend of coastal air and sea temperature was reassessed, providing an accurate estimate of the warming process. Information on species' range shifts was obtained by comparing data from recent resurveys with historical records of algal distributions collected during the 1950s and 1960s. Although a prevalence of northward migrations was anticipated, this work showed a marked difference in the average direction of changes between cold- and warm-water species. Cold-water species, when considered together, showed no particular shifting trend, because the number of species that shifted north or south was the same. Contrarily, all shifting warm-water species expanded their range northwards. Therefore, generalizations about poleward range shifts due to increasing temperature should be made with caution.  相似文献

The Brazilian cerrado (savanna) biome covers 2 million km2representing23% of the area of the country. It is an ancient biome withrich biodiversity, estimated at 160000 species of plants, fungiand animals. There are about 800 species of trees and largeshrubs in the savanna vegetation and several times that numberof ground species (herbs and subshrubs). When the flora of galleryforests, mesophytic forests and other habitats occurring inthe biome are included, the total number of vascular plant speciesis estimated to reach about 10000. During the last 25 yearsmodern agriculture has been developed in the cerrado to producesoya, maize, rice, etc and enormous numbers of cattle are raisedin planted pastures. Charcoal production for the Brazilian steelindustry also causes great destruction of the cerrado. By 1994an estimated 695000 km2of cerrado (representing 35% of its area)had been converted to ‘anthropic landscape’. Thiscompares to the destruction of about 400000 km2of BrazilianAmazonian forest representing 12 or 13% of the area of thisbiome. Conservation initiatives are now desperately needed.Only 1.5% of the cerrado biome is preserved as Federal Reservesand this area needs to be at least tripled. Surveys of the vascularflora aimed at discovering biogeographic patterns are now inprogress with the objective of choosing representative areasand biodiversity ‘hot spots’ for conservation. Summary

Biomphalaria straminea is a freshwater snail and one of the intermediate hosts of the trematode parasite which causes schistosomiasis in Brazil. The main stages of embryonic development were analyzed with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), using the fluorescent probe DiOC and Nile Red as a vital stain in in vivo preparations. In fixed preparations nuclei were stained by the Feulgen reaction or the fluorescent DNA probe, Höechst 33342. Results obtained from the analysis of embryos at the stages of early cleavage, morula, blastula, gastrula, early trocophore and veliger showed that these stages are similar to those described for Biomphalaria glabrata and Biomphalaria tenagophila. CLSM optical sections of early trochophore showed important morphological structures such as the blastopore, stomodeum and shell gland; and in early veliger, internal organs such as the esophagus, stomach and male and female ducts were also clearly identified.  相似文献

Woundfin (Plagopterus argentissimus) is one of several endangered warmwater fishes once common to the lower Colorado River basin. Dexter National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center maintains a refugium stock founded in 1982, and augmented with c. 1000 young fish in 1989. Genetic characterization of the refugium stock and salvaged fish from the Virgin River is necessary to develop a strategy to incorporate salvaged fish into the hatchery stock. We developed an enriched microsatellite library and 12 species‐specific polymorphic loci. Alleles per locus ranged from 10 to 19, averaging 13. The average expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.884 and 0.895, respectively.  相似文献

The tight junctions between Sertoli cells were examined by freeze-fracture in 3-month-old prenatally irradiated rats, whose seminiferous tubules are devoid of germ cells. The replicas from irradiated tubules show elaborate interdigitations of the lateral membranes of Sertoli cells and very extensive tight junctions. These junctions are characterized by a great number of continuous parallel or complex interweaving strands of intramembranous particles, preferentially associated with E fracture faces. The presence of highly cross-linked tight junctional strands is compatible with an epithelium deprived of germ cells, with a reduced need for flexibility. Anomalous ectoplasmic specializations, consisting of groups of cisternae arranged perpendicularly to the lateral surface, are found in the irradiated tubules. These structures may be involved in a storage mechanism of redundant lateral membrane resulting from the elimination of germ cells. Typical gap junctions, intercalated between the tight junctional strands, are larger and more frequently found in treated animals than in controls. These findings indicate that a very tight permeability barrier seems to be established in the irradiated testis even in the absence of germ cells. Thus, the formation and maintenance of Sertoli tight junctions do not appear to be directly dependent on the presence of germ cells. Nevertheless, the alterations detected in the tight junction architecture and in the ectoplasmic specializations indicate that maturing germ cells probably contribute to the functional organization of the blood—testis barrier in the normal testis.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A medium containing sodium and potassium chloride, phosphate buffer, glucose, calf serum, hemoglobin and lactalbumin hydrolysate permits some growth and differentiation of crithidiae into the metacyclic forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. The addition of ox liver infusion greatly enhances the growth promoting properties of this medium while making it very poor as far as differentiation is concerned. With dog heart infusion instead of ox liver, the medium is still good for growth but not much better for differentiation. If, however, the pH of the dog heart infusion medium is lowered from 7.2 to 6.7, it continues to be good for growth and becomes excellent for differentiation. Other factors were studied that stimulate or repress the rate of differentiation, such as preincubation at certain levels of temperature and the size and age of inocula.  相似文献

Little is known about past vegetation dynamics in Eastern Tropical South America (ETSA). Here we describe patterns of chloroplast (cp) DNA variation in Plathymenia reticulata, a widespread tree in the ETSA Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, but not found in the xeromorphic Caatinga. Forty one populations, comprising 220 individuals, were analysed by sequencing the trnS‐trnG and trnL‐trnL‐trnF cpDNA regions. Combined, they resulted in 18 geographically structured haplotypes. The central region of the sampling area, comprising Minas Gerais and Goiás Brazilian states, is a centre of genetic diversity and probably the most longstanding area of the distribution range of the species. In contrast, populations from northeastern Brazil and the southern Cerrados showed very low diversity levels, almost exclusively with common haplotypes which are also found in the central region. Coupled with a long‐branched star‐like network, these patterns suggest a recent range expansion of P. reticulata to those regions from central region sources. The recent origin of the species (in the early Pleistocene) or the extinction of some populations due to drier and cooler climate during the last glacial maximum could have been responsible for that phylogeographic pattern. The populations from northeastern Brazil originated from two colonization routes, one eastern (Atlantic) and one western (inland). Due to its high diversity and complex landscape, the central region, especially central‐north Minas Gerais (between 15°–18° S and 42°–46° W), should be given the highest priority for conservation.  相似文献
