1. In solitary parasitoids, only one individual can complete development in a given host. Therefore, solitary parasitoids tend to prefer unparasitised hosts for oviposition, yet under high parasitoid densities, superparasitism is frequent and results in fierce competition for the host's limited resources. This may lead to selection for the best intra‐host competitors. 2. Increased intra‐host competitive ability may evolve under a high risk of superparasitism if this trait exhibits genetic variation, and if competitive differences among parasitoid genotypes are consistent across environments, e.g. different host genotypes. 3. These assumptions were addressed in the aphid parasitoid Lysiphlebus fabarum (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) and its main host, the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae (Scopoli) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Three parthenogenetic lines of L. fabarum were allowed to parasitise three aphid clones singly and in all pairwise combinations (superparasitism). The winning parasitoid in superparasitised aphids was determined by microsatellite analysis. 4. The proportions of singly parasitised aphids that were mummified were similar for the three parasitoid lines and did not differ significantly among host clones. 5. Under superparasitism, significant biases in favour of one parasitoid line were observed for some combinations, indicating that there is genetic variation for intra‐host competitive ability. However, the outcome of superparasitism was inconsistent across aphid clones and thus influenced significantly by the host clone in which parasitoids competed. 6. Overall, this study shows that the fitness of aphid parasitoids under superparasitism is determined by complex interactions with competitors as well as hosts, possibly hampering the evolution of improved intra‐host competitive ability. 相似文献

Cattleya elongata is a rupicolous orchid species spread throughout and endemic to outcrop islands in campo rupestre vegetation of the Chapada Diamantina, northeastern Brazil. We scored nine natural populations of C. elongata for morphological and genetic variability, covering the whole distribution area of the species, using allozymes and ISSR markers and morphometric multivariate analyses. Genetic variability in allozimes was relatively high (H e?=?0.12?C0.25), and unexpectedly higher than the values based on ISSR (H e?=?0.16?C0.19). The populations present moderate structuring (allozymes, ??PT?=?0.14; ISSR, ??PT?=?0.18) and low inbreeding (allozymes, F IS?=?0.06). Genetic similarity among the populations was high in both markers, in spite of the discontinuity of the outcrops of the Chapada Diamantina. We found no particular biogeographical pattern to the distribution of the genetic and morphologic similarity among the populations of C. elongata. We found high morphological variability with moderate differentiation among the populations. We did not find any correlation among genetic, morphological, and geographical distances, and among the variability found in the morphological and genetic markers. The differences observed between the two genetic markers and the various morphological markers examined here indicated that the isolated use of any single parameter of these different populations for conservation planning or management would not consider all of the variability to be found in the species, as found in other Brazilian campos rupestres plants. 相似文献

Earth system models associate the ongoing global warming with increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events such as droughts and heat waves. The carbon balance of soils may be more sensitive to the impact of such extremes than to homogeneously distributed changes in soil temperature (Ts) or soil water content (θs). One parameter influenced by more pronounced drying/rewetting cycles or increases in Ts is the wettability of soils. Results from laboratory and field studies showed that low θs, particularly in combination with high Ts can increase soil water repellency (SWR). Recent studies have provided evidence that the stability of soil organic matter (SOM) against microbial decomposition is substantially enhanced in water repellent soils. This review hypothesizes that SWR is an important SOM stabilization mechanism that could become more important because of the increase in extreme events. We discuss wettability‐induced changes in soil moisture distribution and in soil aggregate turnover as the main mechanisms explaining the reduced mineralization of SOM with increasing SWR. The creation of preferential flow paths and subsequent uneven penetration of rainwater may cause a long‐term reduction of soil water availability, affecting both microorganisms and plants. We conclude that climate change‐induced SWR may intensify the effects of climatic drought and thus affects ecosystem processes such as SOM decomposition and plant productivity, as well as changes in vegetation and microbial community structure. Future research on biosphere–climate interactions should consider the effects of increasing SWR on soil moisture and subsequently on both microbial activity and plant productivity, which ultimately determine the overall carbon balance. 相似文献

Oxidative stress with reactive oxygen species (ROS) can contribute to the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Antioxidant enzymes, such as extracellular superoxide dismutase (ECSOD), may modulate the injury and repair components of the fibrogenic response. Here we determined whether ECSOD could attenuate experimental TGF-β1-induced persistent lung fibrosis. In this study, primary human lung fibroblasts, MRC-5 fibroblasts and A549 epithelial cells were exposed to recombinant active TGF-β1. An adenovirus vector that expresses human ECSOD (AdECSOD) was constructed and rats were endotracheally intubated with an adenoviral vector encoding active TGF-β1 (AdTGF-β1), AdECSOD or a control vector (AdDL70) alone or in combinations AdTGF-β1/AdDL70 or AdTGF-β1/AdECSOD. TGF-β1 alone induced fibrotic responses and significantly down-regulated endogenous ECSOD gene expression both in vitro and in vivo and caused oxidative stress in rat lung, associated with increased levels of activated TGF-β1 in lung fluid and tissue. ECSOD protein was markedly reduced in the interstitium and fibrotic foci in TGF-β1 induced experimental lung fibrosis. The fibrotic response caused by AdTGF-β1 was markedly attenuated by concomitant gene transfer using AdECSOD, detected by lung function measurements, histologic and morphometric analysis, hydroxyproline content and fibrosis-related gene expression. In addition, the oxidative stress and increased presence of activated TGF-β1 in rat lung induced by AdTGF-β1 was significantly reduced by ECSOD gene transfer. These findings suggest a substantial role for oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of TGF-β1 driven persistent pulmonary fibrosis and enhanced presence of ECSOD can inhibit latent TGF-β1 activation by ROS and diminish subsequent fibrotic responses. 相似文献

The role of HRT and low temperature on the acid-phase anaerobic digestion of municipal and industrial wastewaters 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Two identical 31 completely mixed reactors with solids recycling capabilities were used to investigate the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and low temperatures on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. One reactor was fed with a 1:1 ratio of diluted primary sludge and a starch-rich industrial wastewater, while the other was fed with diluted primary sludge alone. The VFA and soluble COD concentrations and specific production rates reached their highest values at 30 h HRT and at 25 degrees C. Further increase in HRT (at 25 degrees C) or decrease in temperature (at an HRT of 30 h) resulted in lower amounts of VFA and COD produced. All parameters related to VFA and COD production were significantly higher in the industrial-municipal reactor than in the municipal-only reactor. The VFA:COD ratios were very high, with values ranging from about 0.8 to 1.0 indicating that hydrolysis was the rate-limiting step. Degradation of proteins (measured by ammonia production) was inhibited by the starch-rich wastewater in the industrial-municipal reactor, while no evidence of inhibition was found in the municipal-only reactor. This study revealed that VFA production was feasible at low temperatures (down to 8 degrees C), particularly in the presence of the industrial waste. Using fetal cortical neurons and phospho-specific MAP kinase antibody, we investigated the modulation of MAP kinase pathway by ethanol. Our results show that acute ethanol inhibited, while chronic treatment increased, the phosphorylation of MAP kinase per se; likewise AP-5 (a competitive antagonist for NMDA receptors) also increased the basal phosphorylation of MAP kinase following chronic treatment for 5 days. However, chronic ethanol or AP-5 induced MAP kinase phosphorylation was inhibited by KN-62 (calcium calmodulin dependent kinase inhibitor), suggesting the possible involvement of CaM (Calcium calmodulin) kinase. Immunoblot analysis revealed an upregulation of CaM kinase content in chronic ethanol and AP-5 treated cells. These results indicate that acute ethanol may inhibit, while chronic ethanol treatment increases, the basal phosphorylation of MAP kinase per se. 相似文献

We assessed the antioxidant activity of non-narcotic analgesics, acetaminophen and aspirin in rat brain homogenates and neuroprotective effects in vivo in rats intranigrally treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl pyridinium (MPP+). Both drugs inhibited cyanide-induced superoxide anion generation, as well as lipid peroxidation in rat brain homogenates, the combination of the agents resulting in a potentiation of this effect. Acetaminophen or aspirin when administered alone or in combination, did not alter dopamine (DA) levels in the forebrain or in the striatum. Intranigral infusion of MPP+ in rats caused severe depletion of striatal DA levels in the ipsilateral striatum in rats by the third day. Systemic post-treatment of acetaminophen afforded partial protection, whereas similar treatment of aspirin resulted in complete blockade of MPP+-induced striatal DA depletion. While these findings suggest usefulness of non-narcotic analgesics in neuroprotective therapy in neurodegenerative diseases, aspirin appears to be a potential candidate in prophylactic as well as in adjuvant therapy in Parkinson's disease. 相似文献
