1. Unpredictable, extreme climatic events (e.g. droughts) can potentially destabilize aquatic communities. From 1998 to 2002, southwestern Georgia, U.S.A., experienced the third worst drought of the last 100 years, leading to loss of surface flow in many small streams. We sampled macroinvertebrates, flow and water chemistry in small headwater streams from 2001 to 2007 in two adjacent coastal plain streams of contrasting headwater type (wetland and groundwater‐fed seep) following resumption of flow. 2. Decreasing water temperature, conductivity and nutrient concentrations within the first 2 years of the study indicated flushing of the streambed associated with increased discharge. Invertebrate community composition became less variable over time and during wetter years, reflecting water chemistry, hydrological and climate conditions. 3. A core set of species appeared immediately following breaking of the drought in both streams, reflecting a shared species pool. These species exhibited resilience traits, including short life cycles and resistance to desiccation, which allowed for rapid recovery from disturbance. Such species, which were small‐bodied, sclerotized and abundant in the drift, were then replaced as flows increased by those that were larger, soft‐bodied and rare in drift, suggesting a more stable and less ephemeral habitat. 4. Hydrologic regime and long‐term precipitation indices were strongly correlated with invertebrate community and trait structure. Long‐term data allowed for better interpretation of the effects of infrequent disturbances on aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, long‐term precipitation indices (i.e. 48‐month standardized precipitation index) can indicate the likelihood of a return to drought, allowing for the collection of pre‐disturbance data.  相似文献

The South-east Asian pheasant genus Polyplectron is comprised of six or seven species which are characterized by ocelli (ornamental eye-spots) in all but one species, though the sizes and distribution of ocelli vary among species. All Polyplectron species have lateral displays, but species with ocelli also display frontally to females, with feathers held erect and spread to clearly display the ocelli. The two least ornamented Polyplectron species, one of which completely lacks ocelli, have been considered the primitive members of the genus, implying that ocelli are derived. We examined this hypothesis phylogenetically using complete mitochondrial cytochrome b and control region sequences, as well as sequences from intron G in the nuclear ovomucoid gene, and found that the two least ornamented species are in fact the most recently evolved. Thus, the absence and reduction of ocelli and other ornamental traits in Polyplectronare recent losses. The only variable that may correlate with the reduction in ornamentation is habitat, as the two less-ornamented species inhabit montane regions, while the ornamented species inhabit lowland regions. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of models of sexual selection. The phylogeny is not congruent with current geographical distributions, and there is little evidence that Pleistocene sea level changes promoted speciation in this genus. Maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses of cytochrome b sequences suggest that the closest relatives of Polyplectron are probably the peafowl and the argus pheasants.  相似文献

Plant growth, leaf protein and chlorophyll content, and chloroplastultrastructure as affected by nitrogen (N) were examined infour rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars grown in culture solutionunder controlled conditions. Increasing N concentration generallyincreased height and shoot dry weight of all cultivars. Cultivardifferences were significant at normal N level (40 ppm). Amongcultivars, IR8 was most responsive to increasing N, having thesignificantly highest shoot dry weight and protein content.Total chlorophyll and protein contents varied with cultivarand N, but chlorophyll a/b ratio remained constant. At the ultrastructurallevel, chloroplasts had generally well-developed grana and stromalamellae at 40 ppm.N. Chloroplasts at high N had from one tofour times as many grana as the N-deficient chloroplasts. Nitrogendeficiency reduced the size of the chloroplast, grana-stromalamellae and resulted in fewer poorly stacked grana. Increasingthe N level (120 ppm) above the normal level did not significantlyaffect chloroplast size of any cultivar, except for IR8 whichhad the largest chloroplast. A reduction in the number of starchgrains was observed in IR8, but more were present in ER36 underN-deficient conditions. The size of starch grains was not affectedby N and did not differ among cultivars. Plastoglobuli appearedto be larger under N-deficient conditions. Nitrogen had no effecton the number of plastoglobuli but cultivar differences existed.The highly N-responsive IR8 (based on dry weight) had the largestchloroplast which increased with N level. The increase in chloroplastsize accounted for the increase in both chlorophyll and proteincontents and, consequently, dry weight. Ocean acidification (OA) refers to the increase in acidity (decrease in pH) of the ocean's surface waters resulting from oceanic uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Mounting experimental evidence suggests that OA threatens numerous marine organisms, including reef‐building corals. Coral recruitment is critical to the persistence and resilience of coral reefs and is regulated by several early life processes, including: larval availability (gamete production, fertilization, etc.), larval settlement, postsettlement growth, and survival. Environmental factors that disrupt these early life processes can result in compromised or failed recruitment and profoundly affect future population dynamics. To evaluate the effects of OA on the sexual recruitment of corals, we tested larval metabolism, larval settlement, and postsettlement growth of the common Caribbean coral Porites astreoides at three pCO2 levels: ambient seawater (380 μatm) and two pCO2 scenarios that are projected to occur by the middle (560 μatm) and end (800 μatm) of the century. Our results show that larval metabolism is depressed by 27% and 63% at 560 and 800 μatm, respectively, compared with controls. Settlement was reduced by 42–45% at 560 μatm and 55–60% at 800 μatm, relative to controls. Results indicate that OA primarily affects settlement via indirect pathways, whereby acidified seawater alters the substrate community composition, limiting the availability of settlement cues. Postsettlement growth decreased by 16% and 35% at 560 and 800 μatm, respectively, relative to controls. This study demonstrates that OA has the potential to negatively impact multiple early life history processes of P. astreoides and may contribute to substantial declines in sexual recruitment that are felt at the community and/or ecosystem scale.  相似文献

Polyploidy in vertebrate ancestry: Ohno and beyond   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Over 30 years ago, Susumu Ohno proposed that two rounds of polyploidy occurred early in vertebrate evolution. We re-examine this proposal using three recent lines of evidence. First, total gene number estimates from completely sequenced genomes suggest an increase in total gene number somewhere along the vertebrate or prevertebrate lineage, compatible with Ohno's model. Second, analyses of homeobox and other genes from amphioxus reveal very extensive gene duplication specifically on the vertebrate lineage. This refines the timing of putative polyploidy to after the divergence of amphioxus and vertebrates. Third, the existence of four-fold paralogy regions in the human genome is suggestive of two rounds of polyploidy, although other explanations are possible. We propose an experimental test, based on chromosomal localization of genes in amphioxus, that should resolve whether paralogy regions are indeed remnants of duplication in vertebrate ancestry.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 425–430.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Nest site selection is a critical component of reproduction and has presumably evolved in relation to predation, local resources, and microclimate. We investigated nest-site choice by king eiders (Somateria spectabilis) on the coastal plain of northern Alaska, USA, 2003–2005. We hypothesized that nest-site selection is driven by predator avoidance and that a variety of strategies including concealment, seclusion, and conspecific or inter-specific nest defense might lead to improved nesting success. We systematically searched wetland basins for king eider nests and measured habitat and social variables at nests (n = 212) and random locations (n = 493). King eiders made use of both secluded and concealed breeding strategies; logistic regression models revealed that females selected nests close to water, on islands, and in areas with high willow (Salix spp.) cover but did not select sites near conspecific or glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus) nests. The most effective nest-placement strategy may vary depending on density and types of nest predators; seclusion is likely a mammalian-predator avoidance tactic whereas concealment may provide protection from avian predators. We recommend that managers in northern Alaska attempt to maintain wetland basins with islands and complex shorelines to provide potential nest sites in the vicinity of water.  相似文献

Rare male mating advantage (a form of negative frequency dependence) is frequently proposed as a mechanism for the maintenance of genetic variation within populations. This hypothesis is attractive for systems with pronounced male colour polymorphism because it can maintain particularly high levels of variation. We tested for negative frequency-dependent mating success between yellow and red male colour patterns in bluefin killifish, Lucania goodei . Lucania goodei populations harbour substantial colour pattern polymorphism, and a large proportion of this variation has a genetic basis. We established outdoor mesocosms with red and yellow males in three different ratios: yellow rare (one yellow ♂ : five red ♂), even (three yellow ♂ : three red ♂), and red rare (five yellow ♂ : one red ♂). We obtained eggs and used microsatellites to determine paternity. By contrast to expectations, we found no support for a rare male mating advantage. Red males had slightly higher spawning success than yellow males, particularly in replicates with large clutches and when red males were rare. However, yellow males did not have higher mating success when rare. We discuss alternative mechanisms for the maintenance of the polymorphism as well as the potential reasons for the lack of a rare male mating advantage.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 489–500.  相似文献
