The genus Scalesia is endemic to the Galápagos Islands. Scalesia cordata is a tree occurring only in the southern part of Isabela as small, remnant populations of larger forests. We studied the reproductive ecology of a population protected in an enclosure in order to reveal the extent to which the reproductive system limits the recruitment of young individuals. Pollinator observations revealed that each capitulum received, on average, 2.5 visits per hour and exposed receptive stigmas received many pollen grains. Even so, the seed set and recruitment of trees was poor. Crossing experiments showed that S. cordata produced about twice as many fertile seeds after outcrossing than after selfing. In addition, self‐pollinated capitula flowered for a longer time than outcrossed capitula (3.8 ± 1.1 days vs. 2.1 ± 0.8 days). These results may suggest that the species is partly self‐incompatible, as other species of the genus. The small population size, with its potential derived consequences, is most certainly a prominent threat to S. cordata. The pressure from introduced plant species found in the enclosure also contributes to the seemingly poor condition of the population. To recover S. cordata, we suggest enlarging the enclosure, removing the introduced plant species and continuing to cultivate plants as a genetic reserve. Retrograde amnesia is for a period of time, usually for a fraction of a minute in simple concussion, and not loss of memory for an event. The length of time for which there is no recollection is not directly related to the duration of coma but can be for days or even weeks. It is characterized by inability of restoration of memory for the period in question. Any retrograde amnesia of more than a day's duration results from trauma only if the trauma is severe enough to cause prolonged coma, usually weeks. It should be under suspicion of being due pathologically to more than concussion. Careful attention should be given to the possibility of hysteria or malingering as a factor.  相似文献

1. The influence of current velocity on the pattern of photosynthetic CO2 uptake in three species of submerged stream macrophytes was described by analysing the grain density in autoradiographs of leaves exposed to 14CO2. 2. In Elodea canadensis, the CO2 uptake was approximately two‐fold higher near the leaf periphery compared with the midrib section at high current velocity, whereas at low current velocity the area of relatively high CO2 uptake expanded from the leaf periphery towards the midrib and basal sections of the leaves. 3. In Potamogeton crispus and Callitriche stagnalis the CO2 uptake was uniform throughout the leaves at low current velocity, whereas at high current velocity the CO2 uptake appeared to increase randomly in some areas of the leaves. 4. The relationship between the photosynthetic CO2 uptake pattern and the dynamics of flow surrounding submerged shoots at low and high current velocity is discussed in relation to shoot morphology. In E. canadensis, thick diffusive boundary layers may develop between leaves because of screening effects at high current velocity. Increased diffusion path for CO2 may contribute to inhibitory effects on photosynthesis in this species.  相似文献

The recently isolated root‐hairless mutant of barley (Hordeum vulgare L), bald root barley, brb offers a unique possibility to quantify the importance of root hairs in phosphorus (P) uptake from soil. In the present study the ability of brb and the wild‐type, barley genotype Pallas producing normal root hairs to deplete P in the rhizosphere soil was investigated and the theory of diffusion and mass flow applied to compare the predicted and measured depletion profiles of diffusible P. Pallas depleted twice as much P from the rhizosphere soil as brb. The P depletion profile of Pallas uniformly extended to 0.8 mm from the root surface, which was equal to the root hair length (RHL). The model based on the theory of diffusion and mass flow explained the observed P‐depletion profile of brb, and the P depletion outside the root‐hair zone of Pallas, suggesting that the model is valid only for P movement in rhizosphere soil outside the root‐hair zone. In low‐P soil (P in soil solution 3 µm ) brb did not survive after 30 d, whereas Pallas continued to grow, confirming the importance of root hairs in plant growth in a P‐limiting environment. In high‐P soil (P in soil solution 10 µm ) both brb and Pallas maintained their growth, and they were able to produce seeds. At the high‐P concentration, RHL of the Pallas was reduced from 0.80 ± 0.2 to 0.68 ± 0.14 mm. In low‐P soil, P‐uptake rate into the roots of Pallas was 4.0 × 10?7 g mm?1 d?1 and that of brb was 1.9 × 10?7 g mm?1 d?1, which agreed well with the double amount of P depleted from the rhizosphere soil of Pallas in comparison with that of brb. In high‐P soil, the P uptake rates into the roots of brb and Pallas were 3.3 and 5.5 × 10?7 g mm?1 d?1, respectively. The results unequivocally confirmed that in a low‐P environment, root hairs are of immense importance in P acquisition and plants survival, but under high‐P conditions they may be dispensable. The characterization of phenotypes brb and Pallas and the ability to reproduce seeds offers a unique possibility of molecular mapping of QTLs and candidate genes conferring root‐hair formation and growth of barley.  相似文献

Contrasting effects of soil CO2 concentration on root respiration rates during short-term CO2 exposure, and on plant growth during long-term CO2 exposure, have been reported. Here we examine the effects of both short- and long-term exposure to soil CO2 on the root respiration of intact plants and on plant growth for bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and citrus (Citrus volkameriana Tan. & Pasq.). For rapidly growing bean plants, the growth and maintenance components of root respiration were separated to determine whether they differ in sensitivity to soil CO2. Respiration rates of citrus roots were unaffected by the CO2 concentration used during the respiration measurements (200 and 2000 μmol mol−1), regardless of the soil CO2, concentration during the previous month (600 and 20 000 μmol mol−1). Bean plants were grown with their roots exposed to either a natural CO2 diffusion gradient, or to an artificially maintained CO2 concentration of 600 or 20 000 μmol mol−1. These treatments had no effect on shoot and root growth. Growth respiration and maintenance respiration of bean roots were also unaffected by CO2 pretreatment and the CO2 concentration used during the respiration measurements (200–2000 μmol mol−1). We conclude that soil CO2 concentrations in the range likely to be encountered in natural soils do not affect root respiration in citrus or bean.  相似文献

Analysis of the stem vasculature of the American climbing palm Desmoncus reveals structural features differing significantly from the Old World rattan genus Calamus . Desmoncus has a more directly continuous vascular system but nevertheless shows a vessel distribution that makes for high hydraulic resistance in the axial xylem. Desmoncus is like Calamus in having a single very wide metaxylem vessel in each central axial bundle and is also without direct vascular contact between protoxylem and metaxylem tracheary elements. However, in Desmoncus the stem vascular bundle system resembles that in tree palms (as has been described in the model palm Rhapis excelsa ) in having a continuing axial bundle that branches from each outgoing leaf trace together with a large number of bridge connections between leaf traces and peripheral axial bundles. Resistance to axial water transport is, however, evident in the narrowness of the continuing metaxylem elements in the peripheral stem vascular region. Desmoncus has scalariform perforation plates with few thickening bars in the metaxylem vessels, unlike the simple perforation plates found in Calamus . Thus, Desmoncus shows only limited convergence in stem vascular architecture toward the extreme modifications found in Calamus . Abstract The respiratory metabolism of workers of Messor capitatus (Latreille) was measured using standard micro-Warburg techniques on single individuals. The experiments were carried out at 10, 20, 25, 30 and 40oC, and the respiratory quotient (RQ), measured for the same individuals at 30oC, was found to be 0.77. The specific respiratory rate (y , in μl O2/mg dry weight/h) could be described by the following equation: Iny = -2.24 + 0.098r -0.258 In W; where T is temperature and W is the dry weight in mg. The Q10 for M. capitatus in the temperature interval 20–30oC was 3.4, a higher value than for other ants.
The energy costs of movement and carrying were determined by using the RQ to convert the continuous measurement of CO2 produced at 30oC by Enfiuran anaesthetized workers ('resting metabolism'), by running workers and by workers loaded with a 20 mg weight to units of energy. The resting metabolism was 10.0±1.0 mJ/mg fresh weight/h. The cost of running ( Y in joule per km) could be described by: Y = 3.865 + 0.363 Wf , where Wf is fresh weight in mg. The cost of transport for all experiments could be expressed as 0.64 × the cost of running.  相似文献
