Growth of macrophytes and ecosystem consequences in a lowland Danish stream   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
SUMMARY. 1. The River Suså is a small, nutrient-rich stream situated in an open landscape with clayish subsoil under intensive cultivation. Discharge was variable daily and seasonally due to low groundwater input. Above-ground development of submerged macrophytes was restricted to late May to November, when water velocity and depth were low. Dominant macrophytes were rooted Potamogeton pectinatus and Sparganium emersum and unrooted Cladophora . Biomass development was closet) related to light availability.
2. Growth rates of macrophytes were linearly related to light availability when self-shading was accounted for. Potamogeton pectinatus grew rapidly m May-June, concentrated the biomass at the water-surface during July-August, and then declined exponentially when the shoots became basally senescent. Sparganium emersum had linear, flexible leaves that were continuously replaced from a basal meristem. Sparganium emersum was less susceptible to high water velocities than Potamogeton pectinatus and the biomass declined later and at lower rates during autumn. Sparganium emersum also regrew after culling that left its meristem intact in the sediment. Unrooted Cladophora developed a high biomass during sunny periods and subsequently disappeared at high discharges. The summer biomass of rooted macrophytes was greater in years with high summer discharge, whereas the biomass of Cladophora and of the epiphytic microbial community was lower due to scouring.
3. Submerged macrophytes played a key role in structure and functioning of the ecosystem. They reduced water velocities two to four fold during summer and promoted extensive organic sedimentation. The biomass of benthic diatoms declined parallel to increased macrophyte shading and sedimentation. In addition, submerged macrophytes formed a large substratum for macroinvertebrates and for a microbial community.  相似文献

Paramecium bursaria (Ehrenberg) and an endozoic zoochlorella Chlorella conductrix (Brandt) live in a symbiotic relationship. Uptake of NaH14CO3 was studied to determine if carbohydrate products of photosynthesis are transferred to the host paramecium. Paramecium bursaria containing the algal symbionts took up NaH14CO3 but those without the algal symbionts did not. Radioactive maltose, glucose, fructose and malate were identified from the ethanolic extract of paramecia. Transfer of materials from Paramecium to Chlorella and the transfer of other materials from Chlorella to Paramecium, led to the conclusion that this is a mutualistic relationship, both organisms benefiting from the relationship.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The position and zonation of mines and galls along beech leaves were recorded and analysed by means of an R X C test of independence using the G-test; in a few cases analysis of variance was applied.
2. Ten arthropod species, of which a few were congeneric, were studied. All species were recorded from all leaf sections; however, in all species except one, significant preferences for certain zones were demonstrated. High frequencies of leaf mines and galls were recorded from the middle and basal leaf sections. Apparently, the leaf apex is an unimportant microhabitat for stationary beech phyllophages, except the eriophyid Aceric stenaspis stenaspis and final leaf mining stages of the beech weevil Rhynchaenus fagi; intra-leaf differences are discussed in relation to leaf grazing by mobile, chewing phyllophagous insects.
3. The position of some abundant phyllophages in space and time is discussed. In old beech stands feeding activity is largely concentrated in the low canopy. Presumably, differences in feeding technique and position of feeding tracks of beech phyllophages on the leaf contribute to food resource partition in this canopy layer. In three congeneric eriophyid species niche diversification occurred. Further, in two cecidomyiid species phenologjcal differentiation may contribute to subdivision of food resources.  相似文献

Comparisons of life-cycles of entoprocts, ectoprocts and phoronidsindicate that the ectoprocts probably have evolved from entoproct-likeancestors, whereas the phoronids are of a quite different type.A review of our knowledge of structure and development of thethree groups lends support to this idea. ABSTRACT We developed a remote videography system for monitoring behavior and demography of beavers (Castor canadensis) inside lodges and bank dens. Videography systems taped 6 beaver colonies for 1,080 hours and recorded 300 hours of beaver activity. Upon viewing videotape, we could characterize 86% of beaver activity into 1 of 12 behavioral categories. Of 26 individually marked beavers, we observed 8 (31%) on videotape and obtained a complete count of kits in 4 of 5 colonies. The remote videography system was generally useful and can provide wildlife biologists with demographic and behavioral information to support population modeling and management programs for beavers.  相似文献

Some ladybeetles are specialist predators of aphids, coccids or other prey, although they often eat a variety of species from their focal prey taxon. In addition, the diet is often supplemented with alternative prey. How larvae of the aphidophagous Coccinella septempunctata L. utilize a non‐aphid alternative prey (fruit‐fly larvae Drosophila melonogaster Meigen) is compared with adequate (i.e. high‐quality) aphid prey provided alone (monotypic diet) or in mixed diets. The alternative prey are presented either nutrient‐enriched (i.e. raised on dog food supplemented medium) or not (raised on pure medium). Ladybird performance (survival, growth and development) is poor on the pure fly larvae diets, and also reduced when given mixed diets compared with the pure aphid diet. Nutrient enrichment of the fly larvae has no positive effects. The physiological background for the differences in food value, as indicated by performance in life‐history parameters, is a strong pre‐ingestive effect (i.e. reduced consumption of fly larvae compared with aphids) and a post‐ingestive effect (i.e. reduced utilization of assimilated larval fly tissue), whereas the assimilation efficiency of the consumed fly larvae is as high as that of aphids. The results show a physiological trade‐off resulting from prey specialization that reduces the possibility of utilizing alternative prey when the availability of aphids is scarce. Connected with this is a high robustness against variation in prey nutrient diversity and composition; the ladybird shows little positive response to dietary mixing (i.e. neither mixing of adequate aphids, nor of aphids and alternative prey) or to nutrient enrichment of prey. This contrasts with the results from generalist predators (spiders), where similar treatments lead to strong effects on life‐history parameters.  相似文献

1. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) commonly colonise isoetid species inhabiting oxygenated sediments in oligotrophic lakes but are usually absent in other submerged plants. We hypothesised that organic enrichment of oligotrophic lake sediments reduces AMF colonisation and hyphal growth because of sediment O2 depletion and low carbon supply from stressed host plants. 2. We added organic matter to sediments inhabited by isoetids and measured pore‐water chemistry (dissolved O2, inorganic carbon, Fe2+ and ), colonisation intensity of roots and hyphal density after 135 days of exposure. 3. Addition of organic matter reduced AMF colonisation of roots of both Lobelia dortmanna and Littorella uniflora, and high additions stressed the plants. Even small additions of organic matter almost stopped AMF colonisation of initially un‐colonised L. uniflora, though without reducing plant growth. Mean hyphal density in sediments was high (6 and 15 m cm?3) and comparable with that in terrestrial soils (2–40 m cm?3). Hyphal density was low in the upper 1 cm of isoetid sediments, high in the main root zone between 1 and 8 cm and positively related to root density. Hyphal surface area exceeded root surface area by 1.7–3.2 times. 4. We conclude that AMF efficiently colonise isoetids in oligotrophic sediments and form extensive hyphal networks. Small additions of organic matter to sediments induce sediment anoxia and reduce AMF colonisation of roots but cause no apparent plant stress. High organic addition induces night‐time anoxia in both the sediment and the plant tissue. Tissue anoxia reduces root growth and AMF colonisation, probably because of restricted translocation of nutrient ions and organic solutes between roots and leaves. Isoetids should rely on AMF for P uptake on nutrient‐poor mineral sediments but are capable of growing without AMF on organic sediments.  相似文献
