Intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size, and the genetic and environmental trade‐offs that contribute to variation, are the basis of the evolution of life histories. The present study examined both univariate and multivariate temperature‐mediated plasticity of life‐history traits, as well as temperature‐mediated trade‐offs in egg size and clutch size, in two planktotrophic species of marine slipper limpets, Crepidula. Previous work with two species of Crepidula with large eggs and lecithotrophic development has shown a significant effect of temperature on egg size and hatching size. To further examine the effect of temperature on egg size in Crepidula, the effects of temperature on egg size and hatching size, as well as the possible trade‐offs with other the life‐history features, were examined for two planktotrophic species: Crepidula incurva and Crepidula cf. marginalis. Field‐collected juveniles were raised at 23 or 28 °C and egg size, hatching size, capsules/brood, eggs/capsule, time to hatch, interbrood interval, and final body weight were recorded. Consistent with results for the lecithotrophic Crepidula, egg size and hatching size decreased with temperature in the planktotrophic species. The affects of maternal identity and individual brood account for more than half of the intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size. Temperature also showed a significant effect on reproductive rate, with time to hatch and interbrood interval both decreasing with increasing temperature. However, temperature had contrasting effects on the number of offspring. Crepidula cf. marginalis has significantly more eggs/capsule and therefore more eggs per brood at 28 °C compared to 23 °C, although capsules/brood did not vary with temperature. Crepidula incurva, on the other hand, produced significantly more capsules/brood and more eggs per brood at the lower temperature, whereas the number of eggs/capsule did not vary with temperature. The phenotypic variance–covariance matrix of life‐history variables showed a greater response to temperature in C. incurva than in C. cf. marginalis, and temperature induced trade‐offs between offspring size and number differ between the species. These differences suggest that temperature changes as a result of seasonal upwelling along the coast of Panama will effect the reproduction and evolution of life histories of these two co‐occurring species differently. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

Abstract: Multiplacophorans are Palaeozoic (Silurian to Permian) stem group polyplacophorans with 17 shell plates in a particular arrangement of single terminal plates separated by three columns of plates forming five transverse rows. Their distinctive morphology has prompted disparate interpretations of their relationship to polyplacophorans. Some features are strikingly similar to crown group polyplacophorans and even to some living families. Here we describe two Devonian forms, Protobalanus spinicoronatus sp. nov., a hercolepadid from northeast Ohio, USA, and Hannestheronia australis gen. et sp. nov., a strobilepid from South Africa. Using the results from a Bayesian relaxed molecular clock to test competing scenarios of the relationship of multiplacophorans to crown group polyplacophorans, we demonstrate that multiplacophorans are stem group polyplacophorans in which certain characters of the crown group evolved convergently.  相似文献

We determined whether exposure to a short day-light regime of 14 h 15 min induces ovarian diapause in Culex pipiens L. mosquitoes from Israel and whether differences occur in certain morphological, physiological and behavioural traits. Samples from nineteen localities in Israel, from 33 degrees 05' N to 29 degrees 35' N latitude, conformed to the morphological criteria of Cx pipiens, sensu stricto (i.e. wider spread of dorsal than of ventral arms of the aedeagus) as determined by negative DV/D ratios of the male. Autogenous females occurred at frequencies of 4-55% in all areas of Israel throughout the breeding season. No mating barriers were detected between individuals of autogenous and anautogenous genotypes. Autogenous females were no more prevalent from polluted or enclosed breeding sites than from others with various degrees of openness. In general, Cx pipiens females fed equally well on human (35% engorgement) and avian (22% engorgement) hosts (P less than 0.01). Although females from the southern part of the study region appeared to be incapable of ovarian diapause, at least some of those from the north experienced diel-mediated diapause. We conclude that, in the Middle East, the 33rd parallel provides a southern limit to the range of Cx pipiens with capability for diel-mediated ovarian diapause, but that non-diapausing Cx pipiens s.l. are present at least as far south as Elat (20 degrees 25' N) on the coast of the Gulf of Aquaba.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Small males of all midge (Diptera: Chironomidae and Chaoboridae) species thus far examined (one chaoborid and six chironomids) are rare in mating swarms. They are found instead in vegetation adjacent to the swarm.
2. We show that it is here that females aggregate prior to embarking on mate acquisition flights. In the vegetation females appear to be accessible to males staying behind.
3. Such behaviour in small males may exploit the mate-attracting activities of large males in the swarm and may, at the same time, reduce competition and conserve energy.
4. The evolution and maintenance of these size-related types of mating behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

At Makthlawaiya, in the Paraguayan Chaco, the prevalence of Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) cruzi infection among both domestic Triatoma infestans and domestic dogs was 38%, and IgG anti-T. cruzi antibody was detected by the quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 80% (105/133) of human sera. Ninety percent (25/28) of T. cruzi strains isolated from both T. infestans and dogs showed heterozygous isoenzyme profiles for glucose phosphate isomerase, phosphoglucomutase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. These strains appeared to be closely related to Bolivian zymodeme 2. Three Paraguayan T. cruzi strains showed homozygous isoenzyme profiles, similar to those of major Brazilian zymodemes. It was concluded that T. cruzi strains with heterozygous isoenzyme profiles predominate in domestic transmission cycles in this highly endemic area of the Paraguayan Chaco.  相似文献

Predicted climate change in the Andes will require plant species to migrate upslope to avoid extinction. Central to predictions of species responses to climate change is an understanding of species distributions along environmental gradients. Environmental gradients are frequently modelled as abiotic, but biotic interactions can play important roles in setting species distributions, abundances, and life history traits. Biotic interactions also have the potential to influence species responses to climate change, yet they remain mostly unquantified. An important interaction long studied in tropical forests is postdispersal seed predation which has been shown to affect the population dynamics, community structure, and diversity of plant species in time and space. This paper presents a comparative seed predation study of 24 species of tropical trees across a 2.5 km elevation gradient in the Peruvian Andes and quantifies seed predation variation across the elevational gradient. We then use demographic modelling to assess effects of the observed variation in seed predation on population growth rates in response to observed increasing temperatures in the area. We found marked variation among species in total seed predation depending on the major seed predator of the species and consistent changes in seed predation across the gradient. There was a significant increase in seed survival with increasing elevation, a trend that appears to be driven by regulation of seed predators via top–down forces in the lowlands giving way to bottom–up (productivity) regulation at mid‐ to high elevations, resulting in a ninefold increase in effective fecundity for trees at high elevations. This potential increase in seed crop size strongly affects modelled plant population growth and seed dispersal distances, increasing population migration potential in the face of climate change. These results also indicate that species interactions can have effects on par with climate in species responses to global change.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL., ‘Chablis’) wasgrown under field conditions from sowing until harvest maturity,except for a 12-d period [70–82 days after sowing (DAS)coinciding with anthesis] during which replicated crop areaswere exposed to a range of temperatures within two pairs ofpolyethylene-covered temperature gradient tunnels. At 82 DAS,an increase in mean temperature from 16 to 25 °C duringthis treatment period had no effect on above-ground biomass,but increased ear dry weight from 223 to 327 g m-2and, at 83DAS, reduced root biomass from 141 to 63 g m-2. Mean temperatureover the treatment period had no effect on either above-groundbiomass or grain yield at maturity. However, the number of grainsper ear at maturity declined with increasing maximum temperaturerecorded over the mid-anthesis period (76–79 DAS) and,more significantly, with maximum temperature 1 d after 50% anthesis(78 DAS). Grain yield and harvest index also declined sharplywith maximum temperature at 78 DAS. Grain yield declined by350 g m-2at harvest maturity with a 10 °C increase in maximumtemperature at 78 DAS and was related to a 40% reduction inthe number of grains per ear. Grain yield was also negativelyrelated to thermal time accumulated above a base temperatureof 31 °C (over 8 d of the treatment from 5 d before to 2d after 50% anthesis). Thus, grain fertilization and grain setwas most sensitive to the maximum temperature at mid-anthesis.These results confirm that wheat yields would be reduced considerablyif, as modellers suggest, high temperature extremes become morefrequent as a result of increased variability in temperatureassociated with climate change.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Triticum aestivum, spring wheat, temperature, grain number, grain yield, root growth.  相似文献

The purpose of this guidance is to review currently available evidence on mental health problems in migrants and to present advice to clinicians and policy makers on how to provide migrants with appropriate and accessible mental health services. The three phases of the process of migration and the relevant implications for mental health are outlined, as well as the specific problems of groups such as women, children and adolescents, the elderly, refugees and asylum seekers, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The concepts of cultural bereavement, cultural identity and cultural congruity are discussed. The epidemiology of mental disorders in migrants is described. A series of recommendations to policy makers, service providers and clinicians aimed to improve mental health care in migrants are provided, covering the special needs of migrants concerning pharmacotherapies and psychotherapies.  相似文献

  • 1 In Tribolium castaneum Herbst, in which dispersal is genetically determined, it is possible to select for strains that are characterized by high and low dispersal, High dispersal (HD) beetles are better adapted than low dispersal (LD) beetles for colonization, as can be seen from differences that exist between the two groups with regard to several life-history parameters.
  • 2 Comparisons were made between the dynamics of seventy-two HD and seventy-two LD populations. Generation length in HD populations was significantly shorter than in LD populations. After 91/2 weeks, in open treatments (from which dispersal away from the set was allowed), HD populations had more beetles than LD populations, whereas in closed treatments (from which dispersal away from the set was not allowed) the opposite was true.
  • 3 These findings may explain the maintenance of the genetic variability of dispersal behaviour in natural populations of T.castmeurn.
