The ability to model algal productivity under transient conditions of light intensity and temperature is critical for assessing the profitability and sustainability of full-scale algae cultivation outdoors. However, a review of over 40 modeling approaches reveals that most of the models hitherto described in the literature have not been validated under conditions relevant to outdoor cultivation. With respect to light intensity, we therefore categorized and assessed these models based on their theoretical ability to account for the light gradients and short light cycles experienced in well-mixed dense outdoor cultures. Type I models were defined as models predicting the rate of photosynthesis of the entire culture as a function of the incident or average light intensity reaching the culture. Type II models were defined as models computing productivity as the sum of local productivities within the cultivation broth (based on the light intensity locally experienced by individual cells) without consideration of short light cycles. Type III models were then defined as models considering the impacts of both light gradients and short light cycles. Whereas Type I models are easy to implement, they are theoretically not applicable to outdoor systems outside the range of experimental conditions used for their development. By contrast, Type III models offer significant refinement but the complexity of the inputs needed currently restricts their practical application. We therefore propose that Type II models currently offer the best compromise between accuracy and practicability for full scale engineering application. With respect to temperature, we defined as “coupled” and “uncoupled” models the approaches which account and do not account for the potential interdependence of light and temperature on the rate of photosynthesis, respectively. Due to the high number of coefficients of coupled models and the associated risk of overfitting, the recommended approach is uncoupled models. Most of models do not include the modeling of endogenous respiration and the modeling of light and temperature acclimation in spite of their potential effect on productivity.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of holly (Ilex aquifolium) in the field during the winter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The distribution of holly ( Ilex aquifolium ) and its habitat preferences indicate a sensitivity to low temperature, particularly when exposed to high light. Experiments were conducted to determine whether photoinhibition of photosynthesis occurs in holly leaves in the field in United Kingdom during the winter. Photosynthetic efficiency was assessed in holly leaves that were exposed to or shaded from direct sunlight using measurements of photosynthetic oxygen evolution and chlorophyll fluorescence. Field measurements were conducted over 3 weeks during January and February. Correlation of the measurements of photosynthetic efficiency with weather conditions indicated that holly was suffering photoinhibition, particularly in leaves exposed to direct sunlight. Controlled environment studies demonstrated that exposure of leaves to low temperature and high light resulted in reductions in photosynthetic efficiency; however, leaves recovered rapidly when exposed to a higher temperature and reduced light level.  相似文献

The effect of 2′-fluoro-2′-deoxycytidine (dCfl) on the growth of certain viruses of the herpes type was investigated. It is shown that the compound has considerable anti-viral activity against HSV-I, HSV-II, pseudorabies virus and equine abortion virus. It has an effect comparable to that of araC and is more efficient than br5dC, but less so than acyclovir. Experiments with thymidine kinase-negative strains of HSV-I indicated that dCfl was phosphorylated by the viral kinase, and its Km appears to be low and close to that of thymidine. Density gradient centrifugation enabled us to show that dCfl was incorporated into cellular and viral DNA and RNA. The cytotoxic activity of dCfl appears to be about 10-times smaller than that of araC. Removal of the nucleoside analog, washing and replacement with deoxycytidine reversed this effect, indicating rather a cytostatic than cytotoxic effect.  相似文献

Films consisting of a blend of a chitosan hydrogel and a conductive polymer, polyaniline (PANI), were prepared and characterized for their electrical and mechanical properties. Polyaniline in emeraldine base (EB) form was dispersed in chitosan solution and blend films were obtained by solution casting. The PANI particles in the blend films were then doped with HCl where we observed reductions in the film tensile strength and Young's modulus by about 30%, but the films electrical conductivity increased by 6 orders of magnitude. The highest electrical conductivity of the blend films was of the order 10−4 S/cm. The electrical and mechanical properties of the films varied with polyaniline content, acid dopant type, acid dopant concentration, and doping time.  相似文献

We present an EST library, chloroplast genome sequence, and nuclear microsatellite markers that were developed for the semi-domesticated oilseed crop noug (Guizotia abyssinica) from Ethiopia. The EST library consists of 25 711 Sanger reads, assembled into 17 538 contigs and singletons, of which 4781 were functionally annotated using the Arabidopsis Information Resource (TAIR). The age distribution of duplicated genes in the EST library shows evidence of two paleopolyploidizations—a pattern that noug shares with several other species in the Heliantheae tribe (Compositae family). From the EST library, we selected 43 microsatellites and then designed and tested primers for their amplification. The number of microsatellite alleles varied between 2 and 10 (average 4.67), and the average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.49 and 0.54, respectively. The chloroplast genome was sequenced de novo using Illumina’s sequencing technology and completed with traditional Sanger sequencing. No large re-arrangements were found between the noug and sunflower chloroplast genomes, but 1.4% of sites have indels and 1.8% show sequence divergence between the two species. We identified 34 tRNAs, 4 rRNA sequences, and 80 coding sequences, including one region (trnH-psbA) with 15% sequence divergence between noug and sunflower that may be particularly useful for phylogeographic studies in noug and its wild relatives.  相似文献
