Courtship is an elaborate behavior that conveys information about the identity of animal species and suitability of individual males as mates. In Drosophila, there is extensive evidence that females are capable of evaluating and comparing male courtships, and accepting or rejecting males as mates. These relatively simple responses minimize random sexual encounters involving subpar conspecific males and heterospecific males, and over generations can potentially select novel physical and behavioral traits. Despite its evolutionary and behavioral significance, little is still known about the genes involved in mating choice and how choices for novel males and females arise during evolution. Drosophila simulans and Drosophila sechellia are two recently diverged species of Drosophila in which females have a preference for conspecific males. Here we analyzed a total of 1748 F2 hybrid females between these two species and found a small number of dominant genes controlling the preference for D. simulans males. We also mapped two redundant X‐linked loci of mating choice, Macho‐XA and Macho‐XB, and show that neither one is required for female attractiveness. Together, our results reveal part of the genetic architecture that allows D. simulans females to recognize, mate, and successfully generate progenies with D. simulans males. 相似文献

Class I fungal hydrophobins are small surface‐active proteins that self‐assemble to form amphipathic monolayers composed of amyloid‐like rodlets. The monolayers are extremely robust and can adsorb onto both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces to reverse their wettability. This adherence is particularly strong for hydrophobic materials. In this report, we show that the class I hydrophobins EAS and HYD3 can self‐assemble to form a single‐molecule thick coating on a range of nanomaterials, including single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), graphene sheets, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and mica. Moreover, coating by class I hydrophobin results in a stable, dispersed preparation of SWCNTs in aqueous solutions. No cytotoxicity is detected when hydrophobin or hydrophobin‐coated SWCNTs are incubated with Caco‐2 cells in vitro. In addition, we are able to specifically introduce covalently linked chemical moieties to the hydrophilic side of the rodlet monolayer. Hence, class I hydrophobins provide a simple and effective strategy for controlling the surfaces of a range of materials at a molecular level and exhibit strong potential for biomedical applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-M9T, was isolated from soybean root (Glycine max (L.) Merr) and characterized using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies showed that strain NEAU-M9T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes, being most closely related to Actinoplanes campanulatus DSM 43148T (98.85 %), Actinoplanes capillaceus DSM 44859T (98.70 %), Actinoplanes lobatus DSM 43150T (98.30 %), Actinoplanes auranticolor DSM 43031T (98.23 %) and Actinoplanes sichuanensis 03-723T (98.06 %); similarity to other type strains of the genus Actinoplanes ranged from 95.87 to 97.56 %. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct phyletic line with A. campanulatus DSM 43148T and A. capillaceus DSM 44859T. This branching pattern was also supported by the tree constructed with the maximum-likelihood method. However, the low level of DNA–DNA relatedness allowed the isolate to be differentiated from the above-mentioned two Actinoplanes species. Moreover, strain NEAU-M9T could also be distinguished from the most closely related species by morphological, physiological and characteristics. Therefore, it is proposed that strain NEAU-M9T represents a novel Actinoplanes species, Actinoplanes hulinensis sp. nov. The type strain of Actinoplanes hulinensis is NEAU-M9T (= CGMCC 4.7036T = DSM 45728T). 相似文献

Highly efficient protein immobilization is extremely crucial for solid-phase immunoassays. We present a strategy for oriented immobilization of functionally intact immunoglobulin G (IgG) on a polystyrene microtiter plate via iminodiacetic acid (IDA)–Ni2+ and ZZ–His protein interaction. We immobilized a ZZ–EAP (Escherichia coli alkaline phosphatase)–His fusion protein, which exhibits Fc binding, His tag, and intrinsic AP activities, and analyzed it against the interaction between rabbit IgG anti-horseradish peroxidase (anti-HRP) and its binding partner HRP to investigate the specificity and efficacy of this method. We compared the IDA–Ni2+–(ZZ–His) method with ZZ–EAP random immobilization using sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the results showed that the former method had an enhanced signal, 10-fold higher sensitivity, and a wider linear range. Thus, the proposed method allows a broad range of oriented immobilized functionally intact IgG antibodies on polystyrene plates using only one type of IDA–Ni2+ chelate surface because the ZZ protein can bind to the Fc region of various IgGs. 相似文献

A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, slightly halophilic, yellow-pigmented, oxidase-negative, Voges–Proskauer positive, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated YIM M 13059T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the South China Sea at a depth of 310 m. Optimal growth was found to occur at 28–30 °C, pH 7.0 and in the presence of 3–4 % (w/v) NaCl. Cells were observed to be rod-shaped and motile by peritrichous flagella. The polar lipids of strain YIM M 13059T were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, a ninhydrin-positive phospholipid, one glycolipid and two unknown phospholipids. The predominant respiratory quinone was determined to be Q-9. The major fatty acids were identified as C18:1 ω7c, C16:1 ω6c/C16:1 ω7c, C16:0 and C12:0 3-OH. The genomic DNA G+C content was determined to be 54.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate belongs to the genus Halomonas in the family Halomonadaceae. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain YIM M 13059 T and the type strains of members of the genus Halomonas were in the range 93.3–98.3 %. However, the levels of DNA–DNA relatedness values between YIM M 13059 and the type strains of the most closely related species, Halomonas zhangjiangensis, Halomonas variabilis, Halomonas neptunia, Halomonas boliviensis and Halomonas sulfadieris were 50.2 ± 0.68 %, 46.8 ± 1.9 %, 28.5 ± 0.74 %, 42.9 ± 0.55 % and 37.1 ± 0.68 %, respectively. Based on phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, the strain YIM M 13059T is proposed to represent a novel member of the genus Halomonas, with the name Halomonas nanhaiensis sp. nov.
