Background

Noninvasive recording of movements caused by the heartbeat and the blood circulation is known as ballistocardiography. Several studies have shown the capability of a force plate to detect cardiac activity in the human body. The aim of this paper is to present a new method based on differential geometry of curves to handle multivariate time series obtained by ballistocardiographic force plate measurements.

Results

We show that the recoils of the body caused by cardiac motion and blood circulation provide a noninvasive method of displaying the motions of the heart muscle and the propagation of the pulse wave along the aorta and its branches. The results are compared with the data obtained invasively during a cardiac catheterization. We show that the described noninvasive method is able to determine the moment of a particular heart movement or the time when the pulse wave reaches certain morphological structure.

Conclusions

Monitoring of heart movements and pulse wave propagation may be used e.g. to estimate the aortic pulse wave velocity, which is widely accepted as an index of aortic stiffness with the application of predicting risk of heart disease in individuals. More extended analysis of the method is however needed to assess its possible clinical application.  相似文献

Summary It is well known that glutathione is a ubiquitous and multifunctional compound which is important in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. The balance between the reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms of this tripeptide plays a fundamental role in basic physiological and metabolic processes in plants. Recently, a remarkable amount of evidence has suggested that the role of glutathione within the plant system extends beyond the basic metabolic functions and that it may ultimately act as a modulator of plant development and morphogenesis. Therefore, it is not surpring that research has begung to focus on using the glutathione redox pair system for improving regeneration of cultured cells. One of the major themes that has emerged from in vitro studies is that GSH promotes cell proliferation, while GSSG promotes organized development. Thus, in vitro manipulation of this redox compound within the culture medium could lead to an enhancement of plant regeneration.  相似文献

Penicillium cyclopium triacylglycerol lipase production was maximized in stationary batch culture. We used a surface response methodology based on a Doehlert experimental design to study the effect on the lipase activity released in the culture medium of the three most important factors: substrate concentration, pH and inoculum. Besides reducing the number of experiments required for optimization, this technique allowed us to quantify the lipase activity in any part of the experimental domain.We determined an optimal set of conditions for high lipase production: 1% substrate (corn steep), pH 5.5 and an inoculum of 10(4) spores/ml. Between conditions giving the minimum and the maximum lipase production, we observed a nine-fold increase of both the predicted and measured values.  相似文献

Phaeanthus vietnamensis Bân is a well‐known medicinal plant which has been used for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases in traditional medicine. Using various chromatographic methods, three new compounds, (7S,8R,8′R)‐9,9′‐epoxy‐3,5,3′,5′‐tetramethoxylignan‐4,4′,7‐triol ( 1 ), 8α‐hydroxyoplop‐11(12)‐en‐14‐one ( 5 ), and (1R,2S,4S)‐4‐acetyl‐2‐[(E)‐(cinnamoyloxy)]‐1‐methylcyclohexan‐1‐ol ( 12 ) along with twelve known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Pvietnamensis. Their chemical structures were elucidated by physical and chemical methods. All compounds were evaluated for the inhibitory activities of nitric oxide production in LPS‐stimulated BV2 cells. As the results, compound 6 showed the most potent inhibitory activity on LPS‐stimulated NO production in BV2 cells with the IC50 values of 15.7 ± 1.2 μm . Compounds 2 , 7 , and 8 significantly inhibited inflammatory NO production with IC50 values ranging from 22.6 to 25.3 μm .  相似文献

Biliary duct obstruction is an important clinical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. We have previously shown that the common bile duct (CBD) undergoes significant growth and remodelling post obstruction. The mechanical stress-strain relation is expected to change due to growth and remodeling in response to obstruction and hence pressure-overload. The objective of the present study was to characterize the material properties of the CBD of the sham group and at 3 hours, 12 hours, 2 days, 8 days and 32 days (n=5 in each group) after obstruction. The Fung's exponential strain energy function was used to relate stress to strain of the normal and remodeled ducts. The Marquardt-Levenberg and genetic algorithm methods were used for the determination of material constants for the exponential strain energy function. The elastic constants obtained by the two methods did not differ (P>0.254). We obtained stable and convergent material constants at every time point. The material constant that dictates the nonlinear rate of change in the circumferential stress with respect to strain increased significantly after obstruction acutely in the first 12 hrs., decreased at 2 days and finally increased montonically during the remaining 30 days. The acute initial increase in stiffness was simply due to the elastic response. The chronic remodeling process results in an initial circumferential softening followed by stiffening of the CBD. This study has important clinical significance for patients with CBD obstruction and for endoscopists and surgeons who treat the condition.  相似文献

Phytochelatins (PCs) are metal-binding cysteine-rich peptides, enzymatically synthesized in plants and yeasts from glutathione in response to heavy metal stress by PC synthase (EC 2.3.2.15). In an attempt to increase the ability of bacterial cells to accumulate heavy metals, the Arabidopsis thaliana gene encoding PC synthase (AtPCS) was expressed in Escherichia coli. A marked accumulation of PCs was observed in vivo together with a decrease in the glutathione cellular content. When bacterial cells expressing AtPCS were placed in the presence of heavy metals such as cadmium or the metalloid arsenic, cellular metal contents were increased 20- and 50-fold, respectively. We discuss the possibility of using genes of the PC biosynthetic pathway to design bacterial strains or higher plants with increased abilities to accumulate toxic metals, and also arsenic, for use in bioremediation and/or phytoremediation processes.  相似文献

An enrichment culture capable of naphthalene mineralization reduced Fe(III) oxides without direct contact in anaerobic soil microcosms when the Fe(III) was placed in dialysis membranes or entrapped within alginate beads. Both techniques demonstrated that a component in soil, possibly humic materials, facilitated Fe(III) reduction when direct contact between cells and Fe(III) was not possible. The addition of the synthetic Fe(III) chelator, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), to soil enhanced Fe(III) reduction across the dialysis membrane and alginate beads, with the medium changing from clear to a dark brown color. An NTA-soil extract was more effective in Fe(III) reduction than the extracted soil itself. Characteristics of the NTA extract were consistent with that of humic substances. The results indicate that NTA improved Fe(III) reduction not by Fe(III) solubilization but by extraction of humic substances from soil into the aqueous medium. This is the first study in which stimulation of Fe(III) reduction through the addition of chemical chelators is shown to be due to the extraction of electron-shuttling compounds from the soil and not to solubilization of the Fe(III) and indicates that mobilization of humic materials could be an important component of anaerobic biostimulation.  相似文献

1,4-Butanediol (1,4-BD) is the dihydroxy precursor of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a popular recreational drug that has been banned by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and controlled as a federal schedule I drug. 1,4-BD is enzymatically converted in vivo to GHB by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and overdoses can result in coma, severe respiratory depression, bradycardia, hypothermia, seizures, and death. Presently, there is no antidote. We pretreated CD-1 mice with the ADH antagonist, 4-methylpyrazole (4-MP), to determine if blocking ADH can prevent or decrease toxicity from 1,4-BD overdose. Pretreatment with 4-MP increased the Toxic Dose-50 (TD(50)) of 1,4-BD for the righting reflex from 585 mg/kg (95% CI, 484-707 mg/kg) in control mice to 5,550 mg/kg (95% CI, 5,353-5,756 mg/kg) in pretreated mice. Pretreatment with 4-MP also increased the TD(50) of 1,4-BD for the rotarod test from 163 mg/kg (95% CI, 136-196 mg/kg) in control mice to 4,900 mg/kg (95% CI, 4,812-4,989 mg/kg) in pretreated mice. Pretreatment with 4-MP significantly decreased the toxicity of 1,4-BD in CD-1 mice, presumably by inhibiting its ADH biotransformation to GHB. 4-MP warrants further investigation as a potential antidote for this increasingly abused drug.  相似文献
