1. Predator–prey interactions, especially those involving herbivorous insects, are of great importance in maintaining biodiversity. Predation pressure varies temporally in response to prey availability and activity. However, little is known about the patterns and drivers of fluctuations in predation pressure at fine temporal scales. 2. Artificial caterpillars (placed on plant leaves at breast height) were used to assess changes in predation pressure across four time intervals of the day in a monsoonal tropical rainforest in south-west China. The study examined how assemblage composition of arboreal ants, the dominant predators, changed across the same time intervals. The potential linkages between biotic (arboreal ants) and abiotic (temperature and light intensity) factors with predation rate were evaluated. 3. Predation rate on caterpillars during the early part of the night (19.00–01.00 hours) was significantly higher than in the morning, afternoon, or late night. Ant assemblage composition, rather than species richness or total abundance, best explained the variations in predation rate on artificial caterpillars. 4. The results help to strengthen understanding of trophic interactions by demonstrating that predation pressure fluctuates at finer timescales than previously tested, and that a particular set of ant species may play major roles in predation on caterpillars and possibly other organisms. 相似文献

Despite years of effort, exact pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains obscure. To gain an insight into the regulatory roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) in aberrant energy metabolic status and pathogenesis of NAFLD, we analyzed the expression of miRNAs in livers of ob/ob mice, streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic mice, and normal C57BL/6 mice by miRNA microarray. Compared with normal C57BL/6 mice, ob/ob mice showed upregulation of eight miRNAs and downregulation of four miRNAs in fatty livers. Upregulation of miR-34a and downregulation of miR-122 was found in livers of STZ-induced diabetic mice. These results demonstrate that distinct miRNAs are strongly dysregulated in NAFLD and hyperglycemia. Comparison between miRNA expressions in livers of ob/ob mice and STZ-administered mice further revealed upregulation of four miRNAs and downregulation of two miRNAs in livers of ob/ob mice, indicating that these miRNAs may represent a molecular signature of NAFLD. A distinctive miRNA expression pattern was identified in ob/ob mouse liver, and hierarchical clustering of this pattern could clearly discriminate ob/ob mice from either normal C57BL/6 mice or STZ-administered mice. These findings suggest an important role of miRNAs in hepatic energy metabolism and implicate the participation of miRNAs in the pathophysiological processes of NAFLD. 相似文献

We describe the first case of cutaneous infection caused by Chaetomium atrobrunneum and Clavispora lusitaniae in a one-and-a-half-year-old boy with acute and severe inflammation around his left eyelid. He presented to our outpatient
center with a 6-day history and previously ineffective antibacterial therapy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed
hyphae and spores were on the surface of the crusty exudates and also penetrated into it, and the microbiology study further
showed their characteristic cultural features. Fungal isolates were identified by the amplification and sequencing of the
26S RNA gene and of the ITS region, as C. lusitaniae and C. atrobrunneum. Up until now, most known clinical records of these rare species have shown them as agents of deep mycosis. Due to the emergency
situation, medications were administered promptly and confirmed by subsequent fungal identification and successful therapeutic
outcome. This article illustrates the importance of recognizing fungal infections, especially those caused by uncommon pathogens.
Limitations in the routine identification procedures and therapeutic options of this emerging opportunistic agent are also

This study selectively acylated the primary hydroxyl groups on flavonoids in antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB) using lauric acid with Candida antarctica lipase B in tert-amyl-alcohol. The separation and isolation of acylated derivatives were performed using silica gel column chromatography with a mixture of dichloromethane/diethyl ether/methanol as eluents. Both thin layer chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography analyses confirmed the high efficiency of the isolation process with the purified orientin-6″-laurate, isoorientin-6″-laurate, vitexin-6″-laurate, and isovitexin-6″-laurate that were obtained. The addition of AOB and acylated AOB reduced acrylamide formation in fried potato crisps. Results showed that 0.05% AOB and 0.05% and 0.1% acylated AOB groups significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the content of acrylamide in potato crisps by 30.7%, 44.5%, and 46.9%, respectively. 相似文献

Genetic analysis is crucial to the understanding, exploitation, and control of microorganisms. The advent of CRISPR-Cas-based genome-editing techniques, particularly those mediated by the single-effector (Cas9 and Cas12a) class 2 CRISPR-Cas systems, has revolutionized the genetics in model eukaryotic organisms. However, their applications in prokaryotes are rather limited, largely owing to the exceptional diversity of DNA homeostasis in microorganisms and severe cytotoxicity of overexpressing these nuclease proteins in certain genotypes. Remarkably, CRISPR-Cas systems belonging to different classes and types are continuously identified in prokaryotic genomes and serve as a deep reservoir for expansion of the CRISPR-based genetic toolkits. ~90% of the CRISPR-Cas systems identified so far belong to the class 1 system which hinges on multi-protein effector complexes for DNA interference. Harnessing these widespread native CRISPR-Cas systems for ‘built-in’ genome editing represents an emerging and powerful genetic tool in prokaryotes, especially in the genetically recalcitrant non-model species and strains. In this progress review, we introduce the general workflow of this emerging editing platform and summarize its establishment in a growing number of prokaryotes by harnessing the most widespread, diverse type I CRISPR-Cas systems present in their genomes. We also discuss the various factors affecting the success and efficiency of this editing platform and the corresponding solutions. 相似文献
