Background

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease characterized by intrahepatic bile-duct destruction, cholestasis, and fibrosis. It can lead to cirrhosis and eventually liver failure. PBC also shows some regional differences with respect to incidence and prevalence that are becoming more pronounced each year. Recently, researchers have paid more attention to PBC. To evaluate the development of PBC research during the past 11 years, we determined the quantity and quality of articles on this subject. We also compared the contributions of scientists from the US, UK, Japan, Italy, Germany, and China.

Methods

The English-language papers covering PBC published in journals from 2000 through 2010 were retrieved from the PubMed database. We recorded the number of papers published each year, analyzed the publication type, and calculated the accumulated, average impact factors (IFs) and citations from every country. The quantity and quality of articles on PBC were compared by country. We also contrasted the level of PBC research in China and other countries.

Results

The total number of articles did not significantly increase during the past 11 years. The number of articles from the US exceeded those from any other country; the publications from the US also had the highest IFs and the most citations. Four other countries showed complex trends with respect to the quantity and quality of articles about PBC.

Conclusion

The researchers from the US have contributed the most to the development of PBC research. They currently represent the highest level of research. Some high-level studies, such as RCTs, meta-analyses, and in-depth basic studies should be launched. The gap between China and the advanced level is still enormous. Chinese investigators still have a long way to go.  相似文献

The effect of elevated O3 on tomato plants of three different genotypes (wild-type, a jasmonic acid (JA) defense-enhanced genotype (35S) and a JA-deficient genotype (spr2)) grown in association with the whitefly Bemisia tabaci Gennadius biotype B was examined in the field in open-top chambers. We experimentally tested the hypothesis that elevated O3 tends to reduce the nutrition of tomato plants, and to increase the SA-dependent pathway defenses and the secondary metabolites, and therefore decrease the population fitness of the whitefly. The results show that for all three tomato genotypes, elevated O3 reduced the soluble sugars and free amino acids, increased the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase enzyme activity and the accumulated salicylic acid (SA), and up-regulated the pathogenesis-related protein (PR1), which is commonly considered to be the whitefly-resistance gene product involved in SA-dependent defense. Elevated O3 did not affect the JA level in any of the three plant genotypes, but it increased the levels of some secondary metabolites, including total phenolics and condensed tannins. Elevated O3 prolonged the developmental time of whiteflies fed on the three plant genotypes, and it also reduced the fecundity and the intrinsic rate of increase of whiteflies fed on either the 35S or the wild-type plants. These results suggest that elevated O3 reduces the nutrition of tomato plants and enhances their SA content, relative PR mRNA expression and secondary metabolism, resulting in decreased fitness of whiteflies on these tomato plants.  相似文献

IgG functions rely on interactions of the Fc region with other proteins, which are optimized by tailoring of a conserved N-linked glycosylation at Asn-297. We conducted a study involving 735 control individuals and 138 thyroid cancer patients. Here we demonstrated that previously described age-related change in Fc-glycosylation was further characterized by definite sex specificity. In females, the incidences of most of glycosylated forms began to pose characteristic changes at ages of puberty or menopause. In addition, glycan-glycan relationships existed extensively within Fc glycosylation, which were characterized to be altered upon different states of subjects, such as age, sex and thyroid cancer. In thyroid cancer patients, detailed comparison of glycosylation incidences with control individuals yielded insight into aberrant change in IgG(1) Fc-glycosylation. This aberrant pattern was also featured by remarkable specificities of both age and sex. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine diagnostic values of Fc glycosylation. Finally, clinical measurement of two major female sex hormones estradiol and progesterone was conducted to determine potential associations of hormones with IgG Fc glycosylation. This study provided an important view to the associations of IgG Fc N-linked glycosylation with age, sex, female sex hormones and thyroid cancer. We evaluated the association between linear standard Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures and vascular, renal and cardiac target organ damage (TOD). A retrospective analysis was performed including 200 patients registered in the Regione Campania network (aged 62.4 ± 12, male 64%). HRV analysis was performed by 24-h holter ECG. Renal damage was assessed by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), vascular damage by carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and cardiac damage by left ventricular mass index. Significantly lower values of the ratio of low to high frequency power (LF/HF) were found in the patients with moderate or severe eGFR (p-value < 0.001). Similarly, depressed values of indexes of the overall autonomic modulation on heart were found in patients with plaque compared to those with a normal IMT (p-value <0.05). These associations remained significant after adjustment for other factors known to contribute to the development of target organ damage, such as age. Moreover, depressed LF/HF was found also in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy but this association was not significant after adjustment for other factors. Depressed HRV appeared to be associated with vascular and renal TOD, suggesting the involvement of autonomic imbalance in the TOD. However, as the mechanisms by which abnormal autonomic balance may lead to TOD, and, particularly, to renal organ damage are not clearly known, further prospective studies with longitudinal design are needed to determine the association between HRV and the development of TOD.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: We report an unusual case of retrovesical ectopic prostate tissue in a 73-year-old man with primary prostate cancer. The man's prostate-specific antigen was 24.66 ng/ml. Transabdominal ultrasonography, pelvic computed tomography and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a heterogeneous 8.5 x 8.0 x 7.0 cm mass in contact with the posterior wall of the urinary bladder. The patient underwent a retropubic radical prostatectomy and resection of the tumor. Pathological examination of the prostate revealed a prostatic adenocarcinoma, Gleason score of 4 + 5 = 9, and the retrovesical tumor was confirmed to be a benign prostate tissue.  相似文献

Background

Schistosomiasis japonica is prevalent in Asian countries and it remains a major public health problem in China. The major endemic foci are the marsh and lake regions of southern China, particularly the Dongting Lake region bordering Hunan and Hubei provinces, and the Poyang Lake region in Jiangxi province. Domestic ruminants, especially bovines, have long been considered to play a major role in the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum to humans.

Methods and Findings

A miracidial hatching technique was used to investigate the prevalence of S. japonicum infections in domestic ruminants and field feces collected from two towns located to the south and east of Dongting Lake, Hunan province, between 2005 and 2010. The overall prevalence of infection was not significantly reduced from 4.93% in 2005 to 3.64% in 2008, after which it was maintained at this level. Bovines comprised 23.5–58.2% of the total infected ruminants, while goats comprised 41.8–76.5%. Infection rates in cattle and goats were significantly higher than those found in buffalo in most study years. The prevalence in buffalo younger than three years was significantly higher than that in those aged over three years. All the positive field samples of feces were derived from bovines in Nandashan. In Matang Town, 61.22% of the positive field feces were from bovines, while the rest were from goats. The positive rates for field feces were approximately the same in April and November/October.

Conclusions

The present study found that bovines and goats are major sources of S. japonicum infection in the Dongting lake region and there was age-related resistance in buffalo. Both bovines and goats should be treated equally when controlling S. japonicum infections in the Dongting lake region. It is essential to conduct an additional mass treatment in late March or early April, in addition to the original treatment scheme.  相似文献

Although the regulatory role of cognitive reappraisal in negative emotional responses is widely recognized, this reappraisal's effect on acute saliva secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), as well as the relationships among affective, immunological, and event-related potential (ERP) changes, remains unclear. In this study, we selected only people with low positive coping scores (PCSs) as measured by the Trait Coping Style Questionnaire to avoid confounding by intrinsic coping styles. First, we found that the acute stress of viewing unpleasant pictures consistently decreased SIgA concentration and secretion rate, increased perceptions of unpleasantness and amplitude of late positive potentials (LPPs) between 200-300 ms and 400-1000 ms. After participants used cognitive reappraisal, their SIgA concentration and secretion rate significantly increased and their unpleasantness and LPP amplitudes significantly decreased compared with a control condition. Second, we found a significantly positive correlation between the increases in SIgA and the decreases in unpleasantness and a significantly negative correlation between the increases in SIgA and the increases in LPP across the two groups. This study is the first to demonstrate that cognitive reappraisal reverses the decrease of SIgA. In addition, it revealed strong correlations among affective, SIgA and electrophysiological changes with convergent multilevel evidence.  相似文献
