Background, aim and scope
Fly ash, a by-product of coal-fired power stations, is substituted for Portland cement to improve the properties of concrete and reduce the embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Much of the world’s fly ash is currently disposed of as a waste product. While replacing some Portland cement with fly ash can reduce production costs and the embodied emissions of concrete, the relationship between fly ash content and embodied GHG emissions in concrete has not been quantified. The impact of fly ash content on embodied water is also unknown. Furthermore, it is not known whether a global trade in fly ash for use in concrete is feasible from a carbon balance perspective, or if transport over long distances would eliminate any CO2 savings. This paper aims to quantify GHG emissions and water embodied in concrete (f′c = 32 MPa) as a function of fly ash content and to determine the critical fly ash transportation distance, beyond which use of fly ash in concrete increases embodied GHG emissions. 相似文献62.

The origins and genetic affinities of the more than 500 tribal populations living in South Asia are widely disputed. This may reflect differential contributions that continental populations have made to tribal groups in South Asia. We assayed for the presence of the intergenic COII/tRNALys 9-bp deletion in human mtDNA in 646 individuals from 12 caste and 14 tribal populations of South India and compared them to individuals from Africa, Europe, and Asia. The 9-bp deletion is observed in four South Indian tribal populations, the Irula, Yanadi, Siddi, and Maria Gond, and in the Nicobarese. Length polymorphisms of the 9-bp motif are present in the Santal, Khonda Dora, and Jalari, all of whom live in a circumscribed region on the eastern Indian coast. Phylogenetic analyses of mtDNA control region sequence from individuals with the 9-bp deletion indicate that it has arisen independently in some Indian tribal populations. Other 9-bp deletion haplotypes are likely to be of Asian and African origin, implying multiple origins of the 9-bp deletion in South India. These results demonstrate varying genetic affinities of different South Indian tribes to continental populations and underscore the complex histories of the tribal populations living in South Asia. In the United States, fibrin sealants have been used to achieve hemostasis for nearly two decades. Although their clinical utility was first demonstrated in cardiac surgery, their effectiveness and safety have since been demonstrated to extend to a wide array of procedures. Fibrin sealants typically contain two components—fibrinogen and thrombin—that are combined and delivered simultaneously to a target bleeding site in order to achieve hemostasis. However, many commercial formulations contain other additional components, such as antifibrinolytic agents, that have been associated with adverse outcomes. This subanalysis compares the safety and effectiveness of a fibrin sealant versus an absorbable hemostat for achieving hemostasis during urologic procedures with mild to moderate bleeding.Key words: Hemostasis, Hemostatics, Fibrin tissue adhesive, Urologic surgical procedures, Surgical techniqueIn the United States, fibrin sealants have been used to achieve hemostasis for nearly two decades. Although their clinical utility was first demonstrated in cardiac surgery,1 their effectiveness and safety have since been demonstrated to extend to a wide array of procedures, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, pneumothoracic, neurologic, urologic, otolaryngologic, dental, and reconstructive surgeries.2,3 Within the field of urology, fibrin sealants have been used to manage bleeding from renal trauma,4 as well as to facilitate hemostasis during renal surgeries, including partial nephrectomies.5–7Fibrin sealants typically contain two components—fibrinogen and thrombin—that are combined and delivered simultaneously to a target bleeding site (TBS) in order to achieve hemostasis.3 Many commercial formulations contain other additional components, such as antifibrinolytic agents, that have been associated with adverse outcomes. For example, in an observational study (N = 4374), the antifibrinolytic aprotinin was associated with an increased risk of long-term mortality within 5 years following coronary artery bypass graft surgery.8 Furthermore, repeated exposure to aprotinin may lead to allergic or potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions.9–11 For this reason, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert in 2006 indicating that caution should be used when using aprotinin in patients with a history of previous exposure to the product.12 Tranexamic acid, another antifibrinolytic present in some commercial fibrin sealants, has been associated with alterations in neural tissue growth and adherence.13 Because of the risk of cerebral neurologic toxicity, fibrin sealants containing tranexamic acid are contraindicated for use in neurosurgery or in surgical procedures during which contact with cerebrospinal fluid or dura mater may occur.14In a phase III, randomized, single-blind, parallel-group, multicenter study,15 the fibrin sealant CROSSEAL™ (Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, NJ) significantly reduced the time to hemostasis during liver resection surgery compared with conventional hemostatic techniques. EVICEL® Fibrin Sealant (Human) (Ethicon, Inc.), the successor of CROSSEAL, requires no antifibrinolytic additive and is therefore both aprotinin and tranexamic acid free, and achieves hemostasis using exclusively human components.16 The effectiveness and safety of this fibrin sealant for hemostasis in soft tissue during elective retroperitoneal or intra-abdominal surgery were compared with an absorbable hemostat (SURGICEL® Absorbable Hemostat; Ethicon, Inc.) in a randomized, active-controlled, multicenter study.17 This article describes a subanalysis of data from the largest patient subgroup from that study, and evaluates the effectiveness and safety of a fibrin sealant versus an absorbable hemostat for patients who underwent urologic surgical procedures. 相似文献

PLEKHA7 is a junctional protein, which participates in a complex that stabilizes E-cadherin at the zonula adhaerens. Since E-cadherin is involved in epithelial morphogenesis, signaling, and tumor progression, we explored PLEKHA7 expression in cancer. PLEKHA7 expression was assessed in invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas of the breast by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and quantitative RT-PCR. PLEKHA7 was detected at epithelial junctions of normal mammary ducts and lobules, and of tubular and micropapillary structures within G1 and G2 ductal carcinomas. At these junctions, the localization of PLEKHA7 was along the circumferential belt (zonula adhaerens), and only partially overlapping with that of E-cadherin, p120ctn and ZO-1, as shown previously in rodent tissues. PLEKHA7 immunolabeling was strongly decreased in G3 ductal carcinomas and undetectable in lobular carcinomas. PLEKHA7 mRNA was detected in both ductal and lobular carcinomas, with no observed correlation between mRNA levels and tumor type or grade. In summary, PLEKHA7 is a junctional marker of epithelial cells within tubular structures both in normal breast tissue and ductal carcinomas, and since PLEKHA7 protein but not mRNA expression is strongly decreased or lost in high grade ductal carcinomas and in lobular carcinomas, loss of PLEKHA7 is a newly characterized feature of these carcinomas. 相似文献

Katanin is an evolutionarily conserved microtubule-severing complex implicated in multiple aspects of microtubule dynamics. Katanin consists of a p60 severing enzyme and a p80 regulatory subunit. The p80 subunit is thought to regulate complex targeting and severing activity, but its precise role remains elusive. In lower-order species, the katanin complex has been shown to modulate mitotic and female meiotic spindle dynamics and flagella development. The in vivo function of katanin p80 in mammals is unknown. Here we show that katanin p80 is essential for male fertility. Specifically, through an analysis of a mouse loss-of-function allele (the Taily line), we demonstrate that katanin p80, most likely in association with p60, has an essential role in male meiotic spindle assembly and dissolution and the removal of midbody microtubules and, thus, cytokinesis. Katanin p80 also controls the formation, function, and dissolution of a microtubule structure intimately involved in defining sperm head shaping and sperm tail formation, the manchette, and plays a role in the formation of axoneme microtubules. Perturbed katanin p80 function, as evidenced in the Taily mouse, results in male sterility characterized by decreased sperm production, sperm with abnormal head shape, and a virtual absence of progressive motility. Collectively these data demonstrate that katanin p80 serves an essential and evolutionarily conserved role in several aspects of male germ cell development. 相似文献
