Mycoplasmalike Organisms (MLOs) Associated With the Witches' Broom Disease of Poplar

The witches' broom disease has been recently observed on poplars in Paris and its suburbs. The incidence of the disease appeared to be considerably high along main roads. The electron microscopic examination of 350 nm thick sieve tube sections revealed the presence of wall-less mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs) in diseased samples of Populus alba var. nivea Wesm. They could not be found in their healthy counterparts.     

Combined use of COSY and double quantum two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy for elucidation of spin systems in polymyxin B

Two-dimensional single quantum correlation NMR spectroscopy (COSY) and two-dimensional double quantum NMR spectroscopy (2QT) are used to study spin systems in the 1H NMR spectrum of polymyxin B. Because of different frequency relationships, the two types of two-dimensional NMR experiments are found to be highly complementary. This is demonstrated by combined use of COSY and 2QT spectroscopy to obtain a complete analysis of the complicated spectral overlap which occurs in the 1H NMR spectrum of polymyxin B.     

Effect of corticosterone on adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in estrogen-treated rats

Treatment of adult male rats with estradiol-17 beta for 7 days results in adrenal hyperplasia, increased level of serum ACTH along with reduction in serum level of alpha 2u-globulin and inhibition of adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (5-ene-3 beta-HSD) activity. Administration of corticosterone in estrogen-treated rats reverses the effects of estrogen while in normal rats corticosterone treatment reduces adrenal weight, serum ACTH and adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-HSD activity. In vitro experiments show that alpha 2u-globulin fails to change adrenal 5-ene-3 beta-HSD activity in corticosterone pretreated rats while in normal and estrogen pretreated rats alpha 2u-globulin increases 5-ene-3 beta-HSD activity.     

Renal Failure After Radiological Contrast Media

Over a 12-month period four patients developed acute renal failure after undergoing radiological investigations using contrast media. Though the incidence of serious complications is low, the possibility of adverse side effects must be weighed against the usefulness of the information provided by these techniques.     

Influence of reagents reacting with metal, thiol and amino sites of catalytic activity and l-phenylalanine inhibition of rat intestinal alkaline phosphatase

1. Studies on the inactivation of rat intestinal alkaline phosphatase by several metal-binding agents, namely EDTA, 8-hydroxyquinoline, pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, αα′-bipyridyl, o-phenanthroline and sodium cyanide, indicated the functional role of a metal, probably zinc, in the catalysis. The metal ligands lowered stereospecific uncompetitive inhibition of the enzyme by l-phenylalanine by an extent that paralleled the decline in enzyme activity. 2. The thiol reagents p-hydroxymercuribenzoate, iodoacetamide and iodine inactivated rat intestinal phosphatase. The enzyme could be protected from inactivation by either cysteine or substrate. The l-phenylalanine inhibition remained unchanged only in the presence of moderately inactivating concentrations of the thiol reagents. 3. Inactivation of the enzyme by the amino-group-blocking reagent, O-methylisourea, provided ample evidence for the participation in the catalysis of the -amino group of lysine. At the same time, l-phenylalanine inhibition remained unaltered even when the enzyme was strongly inactivated. This -amino-group-blocked enzyme exhibited no change in migration in starch gel, in contrast with enzyme treated with acetic anhydride, formaldehyde or succinic anhydride. The Michaelis constant of the enzyme was enhanced by such modifications, but the optimum pH remained the same. 4. d-Phenylalanine acted as a competitive or `co-operative' activator for intestinal alkaline phosphatase after it had been modified by acetylation.
