A delegation of five scientists participated in a U.S. National Research Council program to review the status of research on the health and environmental impacts of nuclear testing at the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) in the eastern region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From 11 August through 25 August 2000, we visited several research institutes in Kazakhstan and consulted with numerous Kazakh researchers from academic disciplines ranging from radioecology to public health and medicine. We focused on reviewing data on the health and environmental impacts resulting from the testing. The health effects caused by the testing at STS have received a fair amount of study, and research using modern techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization and nuclear magnetic resonance will likely increase the reliability of dose reconstruction. However, the extent to which the STS is contaminated has not been adequately characterized, and the potential exposure to nomadic peoples and ecological receptors at the uncontrolled test site is not known. Additional research in these areas, and development of administrative controls for the site, appears warranted.  相似文献

Metal localisation was investigated in the lichenised ascomycete Trapelia involuta growing on a range of uraniferous minerals including metazeunerite [Cu(UO2)2(AsO4)2·8H2O], metatorbernite [Cu(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O], autunite [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2·10H2O] and uranium-enriched iron oxide and hydroxide minerals at the abandoned South Terras mine site, Cornwall, UK. Apothecia from samples collected from waste dumps at the mine have an unusually dark colour that decolorized with NaOCl, an observation which together with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of apothecial extracts, suggested the presence of melanin-like pigments. X-ray element mapping and probe traverses across the lichen-rock interface identify the highest U, Fe, and Cu concentrations in the outer parts of melanised apothecia. Accumulation of mineral particulates and complexing with lichen acids are not considered responsible for this since element ratios in the traverses do not correspond with those of likely mineral phases and lichen metabolites are localised in different tissues. Metal biosorption by melanin-like pigments are likely to be responsible for the observed metal fixation. No detectable U or Cu was observed in control samples although Fe showed a similar localisation in some specimens. The high concentrations of mucopolysaccharides and P recorded inside apothecia (within asci containing reproductive spores and hypothecium) suggests that the formation of melanised tissues may help protect vital reproductive tissues from the toxic effects of U and other metals, since the uranyl ion complexes strongly with phosphate species.  相似文献

Unwashed human spermatozoa enter columns of 20% albumin in cohorts and not in a continuous stream. Using normospermic ejaculates, a single cohort, representing approximately 10% of the total number of spermatozoa added, appeared within 1 h of addition. In contrast, when ejaculates from asthenozoospermic men were tested using the same incubation period (1 h), the cohorts contained less than 5% of the total. Exposure of ejaculates to 2-deoxyadenosine, a potent stimulator of sperm motility, doubled the number of spermatozoa present in the cohort, but not the average velocity of the group. We suggest that spermatozoa also enter the cervical mucus and pass through the female reproductive tract in cohesive groups.  相似文献

We present a comparative test of Charnov's recent theoretical model of mammalian life-history evolution. Phylogenetic analysis of life-table data from 64 species, ranging across nine orders. supports all of Charnov's assumptions and most of his predictions. The allometries of time from independence to maturity (a), annual fecundity, and adult and juvenile mortality rates are in agreement with previous work and with the theory, as are the signs of the relationships among these traits when body size is controlled for. As predicted, the non-dimensional products of a and each of the other three traits are independent of adult body size, as is survivorship to maturity. However, we find that the ratio of weaning weight to adult weight (δ) is correlated with adult weight, in contradiction with the theory, and we do not find the predicted relationships between δ and the three non-dimensional products. The discrepancies could be because we have equated independence with weaning, or because the model assumes determinate growth: they could arise if large mammals have relatively longer periods of post-weaning care, or continue to grow after starting to reproduce. There is some evidence that δ is influenced by the nature of mortality around independence (density-dependent or density-independent), and we suggest this as a possible area for further work. In general, the areas of agreement between Charnov's theory and the data are more impressive than the differences, indicating that it could be a major breakthrough in understanding the evolution of life histories in placental mammals.  相似文献
