Aspergillus fumigatus was the most frequently isolated thermophilous fungus from green leaf surfaces. The application of fungicides significantly reduced the frequency of its occurrence there. A. fumigatus was relatively tolerant to fungicides. On Captan-, Thiram-, and Verdasan-treated leaves, A. fumigatus constituted 66%–80% of the total number of isolates obtained at 45°C from each treatment while Dicloran did not depress the percentages. At 45°C, A. fumigatus was found to be strongly cellulolytic with a slow rate of radial extension on YpSs agar and rapid rate of mycelial growth in Czapek Dox liquid medium. Increasing concentrations of all four fungicides reduced or prevented growth, sporulation, starch depletion and cellulose clearing of A. fumigatus. The fungus could tolerate higher concentrations of HgCl2 than of Verdasan. 0.5 g/ml of the four fungicides altered the rates of mycelial growth but not the maximum amount of mycelial dry weight attained.  相似文献

THE ORIGINS OF ADAPTIVE INTERSPECIFIC TERRITORIALISM   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. In order to understand fully the evolution of a behavioural trait one must not only consider whether it is adaptive in its present environment but also whether it originated as an adaptation to existing selective forces or as a fortuitous consequence of selection for a different role in other environments (i.e., as a pre-adaptation) or of selection for different traits (e.g., as a pleiotropic effect). In this paper interspecific territorialism is examined in species of humming-birds, sun-birds, tropical reef fishes, stingless bees, stomatopods, crayfish, and limpets as a means of determining its adaptiveness and its origins. 2. Humming-birds form complex assemblages with species sorted out among the available resources. Dominant species establish feeding territories where flowers provide sufficient nectar. A few large, dominant species, usually uncommon, are marauders on others' territories. Subordinate species establish territories where flowers are more dispersed or produce less nectar, or they fly a circuit from nectar source to nectar source when flowers are even more dispersed, a foraging pattern called ‘traplining’, or they steal nectar from the territorial species by being inconspicuous while foraging. Two species, Amazilia saucerottei and Selasphorus sasin, subordinate in one-to-one encounters, are able to take over rich resources by establishing several small territories within a territory of a dominant and forcing it to forage elsewhere. 3. Among humming-birds, territorial individuals attacked not only subordinate competitors but marauding humming-birds and some insects, which stayed in the territory and foraged at will, and seemingly inappropriate targets, such as non-competitors. This suggests that the stimulus for aggression is ‘any flying organism near the food resources’, regardless of its appearance. The behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder is the stimulus. 4. Sun-birds resemble humming-birds to the extent that dominants establish territories on rich nectar sources and subordinates establish territories on less rich nectar sources or steal from the territories of dominants. The diversity of foraging patterns is not so great as in humming-birds, perhaps because so few species of sun-birds have been studied. However, the advantage of territorialism has been measured in the sun-bird Nectarinia reichenowi. Individuals with territories lose much less nectar to competitors than do those without territories. 5. Field work on three species of tropical reef fishes involved a single aggressive species whose individuals attacked a wide range of species intruding on their territories. The stimulus for aggression in Pomacentrus jenkinsi seemed to be an “object moving through [its] territory”. As suggested for humming-birds, the stimulus is the behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder. 6. The relationships found in stingless bees, stomatopods, crayfish, and limpets are simpler. The dominant and subordinate species divide the resources in their habitat, the dominants' aggression preventing the subordinates from using resources that were otherwise available to them. 7. A general pattern emerges. Mutual interspecific territorialism occurs between species that (i) have different geographic ranges, (ii) occupy different habitats, or (iii) use different resources within the same habitat. Examples of two species holding separate territories on the same resources within the same habitat are rare and occur when the dominant species is rare relative to the available resources. These observations are contrary to the usual view that interspecific territorialism is an adaptation that permits co-existence of potential competitors within the same habitat. 8. Interspecific territorialism is sometimes adaptive and sometimes maladaptive, depending upon the species and the situation. 9. The general pattern of occurrence of the behaviour and the general nature of the stimulus for aggression, i.e., the behaviour rather than the identity of the intruder, suggest that interspecific territoriality is a fortuitous consequence of selection for intraspecific territorialism, the latter being not only an adaptation to the presence of conspecific competitors but a pre-adaptation to the presence of competitors of other species, should they occur.  相似文献

Glucose utilization by sheep embryos was examined in 8-cell (N = 36) and blastocyst (N = 36) stages, by measuring conversion of [5-3H]glucose to 3H2O. Fifty percent glucose utilization occurred at 0.79 +/- 0.69 mM for 8-cell embryos and -0.06 +/- 0.15 mM for blastocysts. Development of 1- and 2-cell sheep embryos (N = 264) was examined under different glucose concentrations (0, 1.5, 3, or 6 mM) and in the presence or absence of 0.33 mM pyruvate and 3.3 mM lactate (PL). Overall, the presence of glucose was detrimental (P less than 0.001) to embryonic development. By contrast, the presence of pyruvate and lactate was beneficial (P less than 0.001) to development. An interaction was observed between the concentration of glucose and presence or absence of PL (P less than 0.05). An optimum level of glucose occurs at 0-3 mM in the presence of PL (P less than 0.1). Development to the blastocyst stage was observed in medium when supplemented with amino acids and albumin alone. Thus, glucose metabolism is not critical for embryonic development, but beneficial at low concentrations. High concentrations can inhibit development, possibly by inhibiting the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Sheep embryos may also be using amino acids as an energy source for development.  相似文献

To study the effect of root-zone pH on characteristic responsesof -fed plants, soybeans (Glycine max {L.}Merr. cv. Ransom) were grown in flowing solution culture for21 d on four sources of N (1.0 mol m–3 , 0.67 mol m–3 plus 0.33 mol m–3, 0.33 mol m–3 plus 0.67 mol m–3 , and 1.0 mol m–3) with nutrient solutions maintained at pH 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, and 4.5. Amino acid concentration increased inplants grown with as the sole source of N at all pH levels. Total amino acid concentration in the rootsof -fed plants was 8 to 10 times higher than in -fed plants, with asparagine accounting for more than 70% of the total in the roots of these plants.The concentration of soluble carbohydrates in the leaves of-fed plants was greater than that of -fed plants, but was lower in roots of -fed plants, regardless of pH. Starch concentration was only slightlyaffected by N source or root-zone pH. At all levels of pH tested,organic acid concentration in leaves was much lower when was the sole N source than when all or part of theN was supplied as . Plants grown with mixed plus N sources were generally intermediate between - and -fed plants. Thus, changes in tissue compositioncharacteristic of nutrition when root-zone pH was maintained at 4.5 and growth was reduced, still occurredwhen pH was maintained at 5.0 or above, where growth was notaffected. 1. The Riparian, Channel and Environmental (RCE) Inventory has been developed to assess the physical and biological condition of small streams in the lowland, agricultural landscape. It consists of sixteen characteristics which define the structure of the riparian zone, stream channel morphology, and the biological condition in both habitats. 2. The inventory is based on the view that in landscapes where non-point source pollution and agriculture dominate, the environmental condition of small streams can be assessed by an appraisal of the physical condition of the riparian zone and stream channel. It is assumed that disturbance of this physical structure is a major cause for reduction of stream biological structure and function. This assumption is supported by a case study using fifteen Italian stream locations in which the RCE was found to be positively correlated to the benthic macroinvertebrate community as measured by the Extended Biotic Index (r = 0.80, P < 0.001) and the Shannon Diversity Index (r = 0.73; P < 0.001). 3. The inventory is designed for quick use to cover a large number of streams in a short period of time. When used it generates a numerical score which can be used to compare the physical and biological condition between different streams within a region. The numerical score is divided into five, colour-coded classes to facilitate use in streammonitoring programmes and to allow comparison with biological indices.  相似文献

The morphology of the respiratory system of the femaleVarroa jacobsoni (Oudemans, 1904) is described. The mobile, appendage-like, emergent peritreme may be raised to lie against the ventral integument or lowered between the third and fourth pair of legs. It is raised when the mite is submerged in the liquid food of the host's brood chamber, where respiration occurs via an external plastron, formed by an airfilm trapped between the rough cuticle of the ventral integument and the retracted legs. The peritreme is also raised when the mite is outside the hive in sub-saturated air, to reduce water vapour transpiration, and it is lowered in the carbon-dioxide-rich and water-saturated hive atmosphere, where it facilitates rapid removal of carbon dioxide. A monoclonal antibody against rat brain type II Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaM kinase) precipitates three proteins from Drosophila heads with apparent molecular weights similar to those of the subunits of the rat brain kinase. Fly heads also contain a CaM kinase activity that becomes partially independent of Ca2+ after autophosphorylation, as does the rat brain kinase. We have isolated a Drosophila cDNA encoding an amino acid sequence that is 77% identical to the sequence of the rat alpha subunit. All known autophosphorylation sites are conserved, including the site that controls Ca(2+)-independent activity. The gene encoding the cDNA is located between 102E and F on the fourth chromosome. The protein product of this gene is expressed at much higher levels in the fly head than in the body. Thus, both the amino acid sequence and the tissue specificity of the mammalian kinase are highly conserved in Drosophila.  相似文献

The respiratory system of Holothyrus coccinella Gervais (Holothyridae) and Allothyrus australasiae (Womersley) (Allothyridae) were examined. The stigma-peritreme complex is connected to tracheae and ventilated by indirect muscles. SYNOPSIS. Cladistic analysis of mayflies suggests that dispersalwas very asymmetrical after the new land connection betweenNorth and South America. Twenty-one genera apparently movedfrom South to North and Central America, but there is good evidencefor only one North American genus moving into the south. Testablepredictions are possible once the boreal (Laurasian) or austral(Gondwanian) designations are made. For example, Paracloeodes,a genus of austral origin, was predicted to be found in SouthAmerica, and in North America in warm rivers north and eastof its known distribution. These predictions have been confirmed.Other characteristics of tropical mayflies, such as length oflarval period and emergence and mating patterns, may be usedto predict habitats and characteristics of present North Americangenera. Merger events and consequent dispersal of organismshave profound influences on distributional patterns, and fromsuch information, biologically useful generalities can be made.  相似文献
