Providing an adequate quantity and quality of food for the escalating human population under changing climatic conditions is currently a great challenge. In outdoor cultures, sunlight provides energy (through photosynthesis) for photosynthetic organisms. They also use light quality to sense and respond to their environment. To increase the production capacity, controlled growing systems using artificial lighting have been taken into consideration. Recent development of light-emitting diode (LED) technologies presents an enormous potential for improving plant growth and making systems more sustainable. This review uses selected examples to show how LED can mimic natural light to ensure the growth and development of photosynthetic organisms, and how changes in intensity and wavelength can manipulate the plant metabolism with the aim to produce functionalized foods.  相似文献

The ability of biological ion channels to conduct selected ions across cell membranes is critical for the survival of both animal and bacterial cells. Numerous investigations of ion selectivity have been conducted over more than 50 years, yet the mechanisms whereby the channels select certain ions and reject others are not well understood. Here we report a new application of Jarzynski’s Equality to investigate the mechanism of ion selectivity using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of Na+ and K+ ions moving through the KcsA channel. The simulations show that the selectivity filter of KcsA adapts and responds to the presence of the ions with structural rearrangements that are different for Na+ and K+. These structural rearrangements facilitate entry of K+ ions into the selectivity filter and permeation through the channel, and rejection of Na+ ions. A mechanistic model of ion selectivity by this channel based on the results of the simulations relates the structural rearrangement of the selectivity filter to the differential dehydration of ions and multiple-ion occupancy and describes a mechanism to efficiently select and conduct K+. Estimates of the K+/Na+ selectivity ratio and steady state ion conductance for KcsA from the simulations are in good quantitative agreement with experimental measurements. This model also accurately describes experimental observations of channel block by cytoplasmic Na+ ions, the “punch through” relief of channel block by cytoplasmic positive voltages, and is consistent with the knock-on mechanism of ion permeation.  相似文献

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 (IGF-2) is a peptide hormone essential for prenatal growth and development. IGF-2 exerts its mitogenic effects via Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Receptor (IGF-1R), and is eliminated by binding to Insulin-Like Growth Receptor 2 (IGF-2R). IGF-2 is also negatively regulated by Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog (PTEN), a phosphatase mutated in various tumors. Not much is known about the interplay between these factors during human odontogenesis. In this study, expression patterns of IGF-2, IGF-1R, IGF-2R and PTEN were analyzed by double immunofluorescence in incisor human tooth germs during the foetal period of development between the 7th and 20th gestational week. Throughout the investigated period, IGF-2 was mostly expressed in enamel organ, whereas mild to moderate expression of PTEN could be seen in dental papilla and parts of enamel organ. Expression of IGF-1R was ubiquitous and displayed strong intensity throughout the entire enamel organ. In contrast, expression of IGF-2R had rather erratic pattern in enamel organ and dental papilla alike. Expression patterns of IGF-2, IGF-1R, IGF-2R and PTEN in highly proliferative cervical loops, as well as in differentiating pre-ameloblasts and pre-odontoblasts of cusp tip region during the early and late bell stages when enamel organ acquires definitive shape, indicate importance of these factors in crown morphogenesis of human incisor. Taken together, our data suggest the involvement of IGF-2, IGF-1R, IGF-2R and PTEN in temporo-spatial patterning of basic cellular processes (proliferation, differentiation) during normal tooth development. They are also relevant for improving knowledge of molecular basis of human odontogenesis.  相似文献

Paradoxical arterializations of venous gas emboli can lead to neurological damage after diving with compressed air. Recently, significant exercise-induced intrapulmonary anatomical shunts have been reported in healthy humans that result in widening of alveolar-to-arterial oxygen gradient. The aim of this study was to examine whether intrapulmonary shunts can be found following strenuous exercise after diving and, if so, whether exercise should be avoided during that period. Eleven healthy, military male divers performed an open-sea dive to 30 m breathing air, remaining at pressure for 30 min. During the bottom phase of the dive, subjects performed mild exercise at approximately 30% of their maximal oxygen uptake. The ascent rate was 9 m/min. Each diver performed graded upright cycle ergometry up to 80% of the maximal oxygen uptake 40 min after the dive. Monitoring of venous gas emboli was performed in both the right and left heart with an ultrasonic scanner every 20 min for 60 min after reaching the surface pressure during supine rest and following two coughs. The diving profile used in this study produced significant amounts of venous bubbles. No evidence of intrapulmonary shunting was found in any subject during either supine resting posture or any exercise grade. Also, short strenuous exercise after the dive did not result in delayed-onset decompression sickness in any subject, but studies with a greater number of participants are needed to confirm whether divers should be allowed to exercise after diving.  相似文献

The insulinotropic intestinal hormone GLP-1 is thought to exert one of its effects by direct action on the pancreatic beta-cell receptors. GLP-1 is rapidly degraded in plasma, such that only a small amount of the active form reaches the pancreas, making it questionable whether this amount is sufficient to produce a direct incretin effect. The aim of our study was to assess, in a dog model, the putative incretin action of GLP-1 acting directly on the beta-cell in the context of postprandial rises in GLP-1 and glucose. Conscious dogs were fed a high-fat, high-carbohydrate meal, and insulin response was measured. We also infused systemic glucose plus GLP-1, or glucose alone, to simulate the meal test values of these variables and measured insulin response. The results were as follows: during the meal, we measured a robust insulin response (52 +/- 9 to 136 +/- 14 pmol/l, P < 0.05 vs. basal) with increases in portal glucose and GLP-1 but only limited increases in systemic glucose (5.3 +/- 0.1 to 5.7 +/- 0.1 mmol/l, P = 0.1 vs. basal) and GLP-1 (6 +/- 0 to 9 +/- 1 pmol/l, P = 0.5 vs. basal). Exogenous infusion of systemic glucose and GLP-1 produced a moderate increase in insulin (43 +/- 5 to 84 +/- 15 pmol/l, 43% of the meal insulin). However, infusion of glucose alone, without GLP-1, produced a similar insulin response (37 +/- 6 to 82 +/- 14 pmol, 53% of the meal insulin, P = 0.7 vs. glucose and GLP-1 infusion). In conclusion, in dogs with postprandial rises in systemic glucose and GLP-1, the hormone might not have a direct insulinotropic effect and could regulate glycemia via indirect, portohepatic-initiated neural mechanisms.  相似文献

The aim of research was to investigate: the need for health care information of Croatian adolescents aged from 13 to 18 years; the difference in evaluation of the frequency of receiving information between hospitalized and healthy children; if the hospitalized children expectations about the frequency of receiving health care information differed significantly from information they have actually received; whose information was most comprehensible to the hospitalized children (doctors, parents, other health care givers). The children were either hospitalized in the pediatrics departments or were high schools pupils (healthy children). The hospitalized children "Completely agreed" (92.7%) with the statement "When I am sick, I should receive information about my health" in comparison to the healthy children (85.1%). In comparison to healthy children, the hospitalized children assessed that doctors, other health care givers and parents should give them information more frequently. The experience of hospitalized children indicate that they received less information then they have actually excepted. The information received from doctors was mostly in correlation with the understanding of this information. We concluded that the children want to be informed about their health, especially hospitalized children. Health care professionals should offer understandable health care information according to the children's expectation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts of: Anaptychya ciliaris, Nephroma parile, Ochrolechia tartarea and Parmelia centrifuga. The methanol extract of the P. centrifuga showed a strong antioxidant activity, in comparison to the extracts from A. ciliaris, O. tartarea and N. parile which were relatively weaker. Furthermore, the methanol extract of the lichen P. centrifuga was shown to contain the highest total phenol content (54.19 mg/g of the dry extract). Interestingly, a statistically significant positive relationship between the antioxidant activity and the total phenol content was observed. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against six bacterial and eleven fungi was established for the methanol extracts from each of species of lichens. The methanol extracts of the lichens P. centrifuga and O. tartarea showed the strongest both antibacterial and antifungal activity. Taken together, the results from this study suggest that the lichens P. centrifuga and O. tartarea may be used as a natural source of antioxidants in addition to providing certain antimicrobial features.  相似文献

The aims of this study were threefold: (1) to characterize and quantify the number, diameter and surface area of exposed dentinal tubules on the cross section of the human coronal dentin; (2) to determine if any such differences in these properties arise in relation to the distance from the dentinoenamel junction; and (3) to evaluate whether such differences can influence dentin hybridization. To accomplish these aims, scanning electron microscopy comparative observation was carried out on 60 prepared human premolars, which were divided into three groups of 20 samples each. The three sample groups were cut as follows: (1) in the central fissure region, one millimeter from the enamel-dentine junction; (2) halfway between the enamel-dentine junction and the pulp; and (3) one millimeter from the roof of the pulp chamber. Using one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) and a regression linear model, the data enumerated below were obtained. First, the mean number of the tubule openings was 19600/mm2 on the first level, 32400/mm2 on the second and 42300/mm2 on the third. The mean tubule diameter on the first level was 0.67 microm, 1.52 microm on the second and 2.58 microm on the third. Finally, exposed tubules on the first level occupied 2.79% of of total dentinal surface area, 23.90% on the second, and 87.78% on the third level. Therefore, significant statistical differences (p < 0.01) between all three groups of the specimens for all three properties were observed, as well as positive correlation between the dentin depth and each of these properties. This indicates that the dentin structural variety, which ultimately determines adhesion to dentine, involves a complex interaction between biological material (dentin) and the particular adhesion system applied.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown an association between low concentration of serum cholesterol, as well as high concentration of serum cortisol, in suicide behavior. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether men after a violent suicide attempts have different serum cholesterol and cortisol concentrations than those who attempted suicide by non-violent methods. Venous blood samples were collected within 24 hours of admission, to study concentrations of serum cholesterol and cortisol. The sample consisted of 31 male subjects suffering from schizophrenia, admitted in a general hospital after suicide attempt, and was compared with 15 schizophrenic nonsuicidal male controls. Patients with a violent suicidal attempt were found to have significantly lower cholesterol levels and significantly higher cortisol level than patients with non-violent attempts and the control subjects. Our findings suggest that suicide attempts should not be considered a homogenous group. The hypothesis of an association of violent suicidal attempts and peripheral biological markers (cholesterol and cortisol) was supported by our findings.  相似文献
