Although several studies have demonstrated that frequency-dependent effects can promote the maintenance of cooperative behavior in microbes, experimental evidence of frequency-dependent effects in cooperative animal societies is rare. We staged mixed phenotype feeding bouts in the spider Anelosimus studiosus , which shows a within-population social polymorphism, to determine how phenotype frequency affects the foraging success of the social (cooperative) and asocial (cheater) phenotypes. Foraging performance was inferred from average change in percent mass for the respective phenotypes after staged group foraging events. We then performed a field census of multifemale colonies of A. studiosus to determine the phenotypic composition of naturally occurring colonies. Our data indicate that asocial (i.e., cheater) individuals experience negative frequency-dependent foraging success in staged foraging contests. Asocial individuals outperform social individuals when their representation is low, but lose this competitive advantage as their relative numbers increase. Naturally occurring colonies, on average, contained 58.33% social and 41.67% asocial individuals.  相似文献

The recent reexamination of a tooth‐whorl fossil of Helicoprion containing intact jaws shows that the symphyseal tooth‐whorl occupies the entire length of Meckel's cartilage. Here, we use the morphology of the jaws and tooth‐whorl to reconstruct the jaw musculature and develop a biomechanical model of the feeding mechanism in these early Permian predators. The jaw muscles may have generated large bite‐forces; however, the mechanics of the jaws and whorl suggest that Helicoprion was better equipped for feeding on soft‐bodied prey. Hard shelled prey would tend to slip anteriorly from the closing jaws due to the curvature of the tooth‐whorl, lack of cuspate teeth on the palatoquadrate (PQ), and resistance of the prey. When feeding on soft‐bodied prey, deformation of the prey traps prey tissue between the two halves of the PQ and the whorl. The curvature of the tooth‐whorl and position of the exposed teeth relative to the jaw joint results in multiple tooth functions from anterior to posterior tooth that aid in feeding on soft‐bodied prey. Posterior teeth cut and push prey deeper into the oral cavity, while middle teeth pierce and cut, and anterior teeth hook and drag more of the prey into the mouth. Furthermore, the anterior‐posterior edges of the teeth facilitate prey cutting with jaw closure and jaw depression. The paths traveled by each tooth during jaw depression are reminiscent of curved pathways used with slashing weaponry such as swords and knifes. Thus, the jaws and tooth‐whorl may have formed a multifunctional tool for capturing, processing, and transporting prey by cyclic opening and closing of the lower jaw in a sawing fashion. J. Summary In this report we review the history of growth theories. We show how classical growth models may be derived as special cases of a generic growth rate equation. We show how growth models may be modified to represent survival data. We use linear combinations of growth and survival models to represent complex growth/survival curves and give practical examples utilizing nonlinear regression analysis. We show that traditional methods of estimating D values are inappropriate for complex, multiphasic growth/survival data. We show how such data may be modeled mathematically and illustrate methods for estimating true D values from such data.  相似文献

A P19 embryonal carcinoma stem cell line carrying an insertion of the E. coli LacZ gene in an endogenous copy of the Pax-3 gene was identified. Expression of the Pax-3/LacZ fusion gene in neuroectodermal and mesodermal lineages following induction of differentiation by chemical treatments (retinoic acid and dimethylsulfoxide) was characterized using this line and is consistent with the previous localization of Pax-3 expression in the embryo to mitotically active cells of the dorsal neuroectoderm and the adjacent segmented dermomyotome. Pax-3/LacZ marked stem cells were also utilized as target cells in mixing experiments with unmarked P19 cells that had been differentiated by pretreatment with chemical inducers. Induction of beta-galactosidase and neuroectodermal markers in the target cells demonstrates that: (1) some differentiated P19 cell derivatives transiently express endogenous Pax-3- and neuroectoderm-inducing activities, (2) undifferentiated target stem cells respond to these activities even in the presence of leukemia inhibitory factor and (3) the endogenous activities can be distinguished from, and are more potent than, retinoic acid treatment in inducing neuroectoderm. These observations demonstrate that P19 embryonal carcinoma cells provide a useful in vitro system for analysis of the cellular interactions responsible for neuroectoderm induction in mammals.  相似文献
