Pulmonary and airway mechanics were assessed in seven asthmatic patients in remission, when asthma was induced by exercise and again after spontaneous recovery or bronchodilator treatment. After exercise there was a sustained fall in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1.0) in all patients, varying from 30 to 80 percent of the initial value. Total lung capacity (TLC) increased significantly in four of the seven patients. In one of the four patients the increase in TLC was associated with an increase in static transpulmonary pressure at full inflation but in the remaining three patients it was associated with a parallel shift of the pressure-volume curve of the lung without change in its slope. In all patients residual volume increased, regardless of change in TLC; both pressure-volume and maximum expiratory flow-volume curves suggested that widespread airway closure (or virtual closure) occurred at positive transpulmonary pressures when asthma was induced. Loss of lung recoli pressure sometimes contributed to the reduction in maximum expiratory flow but diffuse airway narrowing was probably the dominant abnormality. When air-flow obstruction became more severe the ratio of expiratory to inspiratory time was increased and although expiratory flow limitation was present excessive expiratory pressures were not generated.  相似文献

Infant killing by primates is highly controversial. Sexual selection of infanticidal males has been disputed, especially for seasonally breeding species, in which death of an infant does not advance conception of the next infant. We report attacks, infants found wounded, and predation in seasonally breeding Eulemur and Lemur at Berenty, Beza Mahafaly and Duke University Primate Center, and review cases seen elsewhere. Observed attacks leading to wounds or death conservatively total twelve by extratroop males, two by troop males, and seven by troop females. Eulemur are occasional vertebrate predators, whose prey includes infant Lemur catta. Wounds inflicted by lemurs are usually abdominal canine slashes or bites to the head, with rare eating, a pattern distinct from carnivore and raptor kills. Infant killing as inferred from corpses is more frequent than previously thought, but still rare. Adaptive advantages of killing plausibly include eliminating resource competitors of females, and sexual selection on males.  相似文献

A survey was conducted between 1998–1999 to evaluate the level of aflatoxin B1 (AfB1) contamination in some selected Indonesian food products, mainly peanuts and peanut products for sale in supermarkets or traditional markets in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Quantitative analysis was carried out on 118 samples using the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) technique. The results indicate that (61.1%) samples were contaminated with AfB1 at range 2.0 to 249.0 μg/kg. Approximately 50% of the baby food products analysed were contaminated with AfB1 and the maximum level found was 7.0 μg/kg. In corn products and fermented products, AfB1 was detected in 66.7 and 50.0% of samples, respectively. A level as high as 5.6 μg/kg of AfB1 was found in the corn and 6.0 μg/kg in fermented product. AfB1 was also detected in all rice products, feed products, and other processed products at levels of up to 7.0, 27.0, and 26.0 μg/kg, respectively.  相似文献

Adaptive explanations for social grouping assume that thereare fitness consequences associated with group size, and individualsmaintain membership in groups of favorable size to maximizefitness. Here I examine fecal cortisol concentrations as a hormonalmeasure of stress to assess the relative well-being of Lemurcatta in groups of different size and in seasons of normal andlow tamarind fruit availability. I test the hypotheses thatthere is an optimal group size at which cortisol is lowest andthat optimal group size changes in food-scarce conditions. Icollected 799 fecal samples from 87 individuals in seven free-rangingL. catta groups at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar, over a 1-yearperiod (August 1999–July 2000) and determined fecal cortisolconcentrations using a radioimmunoassay. Expressing these asresiduals from monthly population means to control for temporalfluctuations in cortisol concentration, I calculated mean fecalcortisol levels for each animal in seasons of normal and lowtamarind fruit abundance and over the entire year. Overall,females exhibited lowest mean cortisol levels in groups of intermediatesize, suggesting that there are benefits to maintaining membershipin these groups. Females in groups that were atypically largeor small for their habitat type had higher mean cortisol levelsthan typical groups. Cortisol levels increased in food-scarceconditions for larger groups, suggesting that intergroup competitiveadvantages do not outweigh intragroup feeding competition atthis time. Group size may be optimized for long-term averageconditions, and short-term stresses may intermittently alterthe costs associated with group size.  相似文献
