In this paper we examine some ecological consequences and phenotypic correlates of flower size variation in wild radish, Raphanus sativus. Mean corolla diameter varied significantly among individuals within natural populations of R. sativus in California. On the average, almost 40% of flower biomass was allocated to corolla tissue. In field experiments, pollinator visitation increased significantly with corolla size. Large flowers also accumulated more nectar when pollinators were excluded from plants. In three populations, corolla size was positively correlated with allocation to pollen per flower (either anther weight or pollen grain number), but there was usually no phenotypic relationship between corolla size and several measures of female allocation (ovule number per flower, proportion fruit set, and total seed mass per fruit). Plants growing in the field produced fewer large flowers per unit of stem, and stem biomass was negatively related to corolla size for plants grown under controlled greenhouse conditions. Male and female fitness may covary differently with allocation to attractive floral features in species such as R. sativus, where seed production is often limited by resources rather than by pollen. 相似文献

Although a high proportion of fertilizer N may be immobilized in organic forms in the soil, no studies have examined the long-term
availability of residual fertilizer 15N in forestry situations. We investigated this by growing lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) seedlings in surface (0–10 cm) soil sample eight years after application of 15N-urea, 15NH4NO3 and NH4
15NO3 to lodgepole pine in interior British Columbia. After nine months of growth in the greenhouse, seedlings took up an average
of 8.5% of the 15N and 4.6% of the native N per pot. Most of the mineral N in the pots without seedlings was in the form of nitrate, while
pots with seedlings had very low levels of mineral N. In contrast to the greenhouse study, there was no significantuptake
of 15N by trees in the field study after the first growing season, although half of the soil organic 15N was lost between one and eight years after fertilization. This indicates the need to understand the mechanisms which limit

The photochemistry of several model plant-derived compounds has been studied in aqueous solution. In particular, the reactions of catechin as a model tannin and methoxy-substituted hydroxybenzhydrols as model lignin functionalities were investigated. Tannins and lignins constitute a significant portion of the humic substances in aquatic systems, which are themselves the main component of dissolved organic matter thought to be responsible for the absorption and attenuation of light in these environments. Catechin (1) was found to undergo a reversible photoisomerization reaction to give epicatechin (2). Such a reaction is an explicit example of a photon absorbing process that enables catechin (1) and its derivatives to act as natural sunscreens by attenuating light energy through non-destructive reactions. The methoxy-substituted hydroxybenzhydrols were found to undergo photosolvolysis reactions via efficient generation of quinone methide intermediates. The intermediate quinone methides were observed to be longer lived, and thus more stable, than previously studied hydroxybenzhydrol derivatives. The meta-hydroxybenzhydrol isomer (5) was found to undergo additional chemistry leading to the production of a ring-closed fluorene from the quinone methide intermediate. 相似文献

Simian immunodeficiency viruses of sooty mangabeys (SIVsm) are the source of multiple, successful cross-species transmissions, having given rise to HIV-2 in humans, SIVmac in rhesus macaques, and SIVstm in stump-tailed macaques. Cellular assays and phylogenetic comparisons indirectly support a role for TRIM5α, the product of the TRIM5 gene, in suppressing interspecies transmission and emergence of retroviruses in nature. Here, we investigate the in vivo role of TRIM5 directly, focusing on transmission of primate immunodeficiency viruses between outbred primate hosts. Specifically, we retrospectively analyzed experimental cross-species transmission of SIVsm in two cohorts of rhesus macaques and found a significant effect of TRIM5 genotype on viral replication levels. The effect was especially pronounced in a cohort of animals infected with SIVsmE543-3, where TRIM5 genotype correlated with approximately 100-fold to 1,000-fold differences in viral replication levels. Surprisingly, transmission occurred even in individuals bearing restrictive TRIM5 genotypes, resulting in attenuation of replication rather than an outright block to infection. In cell-culture assays, the same TRIM5 alleles associated with viral suppression in vivo blocked infectivity of two SIVsm strains, but not the macaque-adapted strain SIVmac239. Adaptations appeared in the viral capsid in animals with restrictive TRIM5 genotypes, and similar adaptations coincide with emergence of SIVmac in captive macaques in the 1970s. Domoic acid (DA) and saxitoxin (STX)-producing algae are present in Alaskan seas, presenting exposure risks to marine mammals that may be increasing due to climate change. To investigate potential increases in exposure risks to four pagophilic ice seal species (Erignathus barbatus, bearded seals; Pusa hispida, ringed seals; Phoca largha, spotted seals; and Histriophoca fasciata, ribbon seals), this study analyzed samples from 998 seals harvested for subsistence purposes in western and northern Alaska during 2005–2019 for DA and STX. Both toxins were detected in bearded, ringed, and spotted seals, though no clinical signs of acute neurotoxicity were reported in harvested seals. Bearded seals had the highest prevalence of each toxin, followed by ringed seals. Bearded seal stomach content samples from the Bering Sea showed a significant increase in DA prevalence with time (logistic regression, p = .004). These findings are consistent with predicted northward expansion of DA-producing algae. A comparison of paired samples taken from the stomachs and colons of 15 seals found that colon content consistently had higher concentrations of both toxins. Collectively, these results suggest that ice seals, particularly bearded seals (benthic foraging specialists), are suitable sentinels for monitoring HAB prevalence in the Pacific Arctic and subarctic. 相似文献

Numerous reports have established that lipid peroxidation contributes to cell injury by altering the basic physical properties and structural organization of membrane components. Oxidative modification of polyunsaturated phospholipids has been shown, in particular, to alter the intermolecular packing, thermodynamic, and phase parameters of the membrane bilayer. In this study, the effects of oxidative stress on membrane phospholipid and sterol organization were measured using small angle x-ray diffraction approaches. Model membranes enriched in dilinoleoylphosphatidylcholine were prepared at various concentrations of cholesterol and subjected to lipid peroxidation at physiologic conditions. At cholesterol-to-phospholipid mole ratios (C/P) as low as 0.4, lipid peroxidation induced the formation of discrete, membrane-restricted cholesterol domains having a unit cell periodicity or d-space value of 34 A. The formation of cholesterol domains correlated directly with lipid hydroperoxide levels and was inhibited by treatment with vitamin E. In the absence of oxidative stress, similar cholesterol domains were observed only at C/P ratios of 1.0 or higher. In addition to changes in sterol organization, lipid peroxidation also caused reproducible changes in overall membrane structure, including a 10 A reduction in the width of the surrounding, sterol-poor membrane bilayer. These data provided direct evidence that lipid peroxidation alters the essential organization and structure of membrane lipids in a manner that may contribute to changes in membrane function during aging and oxidative stress-related disorders. 相似文献

Resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in Lactuca serriola first appeared in the northern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia in 1994, with resistance soon observed at a number of additional
sites. The rapid appearance of resistance at many sites could be attributed to a number of independent selection events or
to movement of resistant seed from the original field. ISSRs were used to genotype plants collected in 1999 and 2004 from
roadsides or fields in an attempt to determine the importance of these two factors in the spread of herbicide resistance in
L. serriola. In 1999 and 2004, chlorsulfuron-resistant L. serriola plants were found in both fields and roadsides with resistant plants being more frequent in fields than roadsides and more
frequent in 2004 than in 1999. Genetic relationships generated using UPGMA analysis indicated the presence of more than one
genotype within the herbicide resistant populations sampled for both years and suggested independent selection as well as
movement of resistant seed had occurred. DNA extracted from samples collected in 1999 was used to sequence a highly conserved
region of the ALS gene that coded for a single amino acid modification within the gene. Four different mutations were identified
within the resistant samples and these mutations tended to cluster on a geographical basis. Together these data provide evidence
for both multiple independent evolutionary events and for the potential movement of individual genotypes as far as 43 km in
